INTERCOM REEK SUNDAY, 28th July: The annual national pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick, ‘Reek Sunday’, takes place on Sunday, 28th July. Mass will be celebrated on the summit of the mountain on the hour with the first Mass at 8am and the last Mass at 2pm. Confessions will be available on the summit from 7.30am - 2pm. CHILDREN’S CORNER - Learning about the Mass THE COMMUNION RITE: THE LORD’S PRAYER The Communion Rite is when the priest invites us to stand to pray the Our Father together. This prayer is also called the Lord’s Prayer because Jesus taught it to his friends when they asked him to teach them to pray like he did. Jesus called God ‘Father’, and so do we because we are God’s children and part of God’s family. The prayer tells us about how great God is, promises us that God will always look after us as a parent looks after their children and helps us to see how God would like us to be with each other. These differences will be most apparent when using the train simu- lator. The sign instructing the driver to sound the horn/whistle in Ireland is a rectangular board with reflector or light and black and yellow diagonal stripes. Advance permanent speed restriction (PSR) warnings, as per UK rail- ways, are not used in Ireland, large speed reductions being incrementally signed instead. PSR signs are yellow, octagonal, with black border and the limit shown in MPH. AWS is not in use in the Republic, there being other in-cab systems in force. For the benefit of train sim users AWS has been fitted, although not true to prototype. It is not a story of the Egans as lawyers or anything else like that. It is the story of a poor - a dirt poor - family in County Mayo. A totally different story. • Introduction – Egan Family 1590 -1945 • Famine in Mayo 1845 -1847 Unlike most of you, I was never interested in genealogy. Quite the reverse. I think most of you get to the stage when you retire, you have a bit of time on your hands, and you suddenly start thinking - ‘Hey, not only do we not know where we are going, we don’t even know where we came from!’ Well, I am afraid with me it wasn’t like that. I had no interest in genealogy whatsoever. Genealogy came after me. It did that twice. It tapped at my shoulder and said ‘Hey you, come here, I want you.’ It did that in such a way that on one occasion it surprised me, and on the second occasion it shocked me. So as I say, I would prefer to get away from it all, but it just never let me. The first time it did that was back in about 1962, and the second time was in about 1990. Michael J.S. suggested that I should show you where we are talking about. Most of the Egans are from up here around Offaly and North Tipperary, and we are now just there, right on the banks of the Shannon.

The velorail project is welcome and it is good to see investment in the closed railway as we all know the railway is never going to re-open, however in order that this is not exclusively a pay per use facility and is available in particular for locals to use freely we ask that a parallel path is put in place so the route can double up as velorail and greenway. 284 submissions on the most recent county plan asked for a greenway on this route; the views of those submissions need to be respected.
