12 March/April 2017 RIVERBEND NEWS Celebrating Winter At the Family Winter Festival A Fun-filled Afternoon in Your Community By: Miep Raedschelders undreds of Riverbend residents came out to enjoy a fun- filled afternoon on February 26 at Ramsay Park for the 15th H annual Family Winter Festival. Community members enjoyed a delicious barbeque, served up by Riverbend Community League volunteers, and a team from Capital Vision Care who braved the cold to give back to the neighbourhood! Councillor Bryan Anderson, and our MLA, Dr. Bob Turner, who also attended the event last year, once again joined in the fun and met neighbours old and new, including a family from Iraq experiencing (and loving) their first Canadian winter! The sleigh rides through James Ramsey Park were as popular as ever, and delighted squeals could be heard from the kids using Snow Valley’s tubes to slide down the sledding hill. The Orbis balls, a new addition to the festival this year, provided a fresh challenge, and participants were able to relax and recharge making some cinnamon sugar bannock , and enjoying a cup of hot chocolate by the fire. Excited kids listened for their numbers to be called for their prize draws and lucky raffle winners walked away with a Jasper ski getaway package, Vine’s wine selection, chocolates, restaurant gift cards and more. So much fun celebrating the Season in our Winter City! The Family Winter Festival is a partnership event put on by The Riverbend Community League and Snow Valley. The festival could not proceed without the generous support from our local businesses and especially the efforts of our wonderful volunteers, including 35 Lillian Osborne High School students! Thank you and we look forward to seeing you next year!

A great big thank you to Harman Brar who took the lead and planned a spectacular hockey game and skills FOR WARD 9 competition for neighbourhood kids of any age and ability, all in the name of family fun and neighbourhood pride. Once again, Frank Gregory dropped the puck on the ice that he so carefully maintains all winter long at the Ronning Street snow bank rink. Neighbours and friends came together sharing potluck treats and cheering on the efforts of their children. The elated kids proudly wore their Ronning Park Winter Classic shirts, and were delighted to see the number 97 emblazoned on the back! Ronning Street Park is a gem in Rhatigan Ridge, and is a gathering place for community members. The snow bank rink keeps the community spirit alive all year long and is built and maintained entirely by volunteers. Special thanks go out to the Terwillegar Park Estates Homeowners Association for building and maintaining the rink each year, specifically to Frank Gregory, Harman Brar, Adam Carpenter, Stephen Adams, Trevor Harrington and Travis Swain. The Oak Hills Community League is embarking on its next phase as a community league; infrastructure planning and more programming. We are like a very self contained island. Our league has initiated and is OHCL President partnering with 2 surrounding community leagues and the City to producing our very first Community Rob Agostinis Map Brochure. WWW.RIVERBENDONLINE.CA 21 EDUCATION MATTERS Lillian Osborne High Coming Soon to Your School Osborne Athletics are Growing Strong Neighbourhood! By: Kate Greabeiel f you have driven by I Lillian Osborne over the past 18 months you have undoubtedly noticed major changes. To accommodate the growing student population, the school is expanding in a variety of ways including additional classrooms, a state of the art theatre and a second gymnasium. As the school expands so does our Athletics program! A highlight of this will be the addition of a football team to the Legends line-up of teams. Football will begin in the fall and we are fortunate to have former coach, Senny Leong, kick starting this program. This is exciting as this will help bring our Athletics program to the next level. We are also in the process of starting women’s rugby this spring and hoping to follow it up next year with a men’s team as well. All of these as additions are hoping to emulate the success of our current teams including our basketball program. Right now our Senior Men’s team is 4th in division 1 and the 11th ranked team in the province heading into playoffs and looking for their first ever provincial berth! This is following two consecutive years of Tier 2 City Championships for our Jr Men’s team. Also having a great season is our Junior Women’s basketball team who finished the Tier 3 regular season undefeated and look to make a run for this year’s title which is impressive on its own, but even more so since last year there wasn’t a Junior Women’s team. As basketball finishes up we get started with badminton & team handball. Our badminton team boasts one of the best women’s singles players in the province and we expect big things once again from Ivy Ung and the rest of the team. Another highlight for Osborne Athletics will happen April 27-29 when we host Tier 1 Team Handball Provincials. Both men’s and women’s look to contend for medals in this first class event. Spring dance classes in Riverbend! As soon as the snow melts we will hit the fields with soccer teams and track & field. Osborne is looking forward to the continued growth of athletics! We aim to build a Legendary Athletics program! Go Legends Go! Kate Greabeiel is the Lillian Osborne’s Athletic and Physical Education Department Head.
