G Includes four duets with Goldie Hill, including their country chart hits Looking Back To See and Sure-Fire Kisses. G Stellar support from Nashville session masters like Hank Garland, Grady Martin and Buddy Emmons, plus a vocal duet with Roger Miller. G Superlative sound quality from the original Decca mono and stereo session masters. INFORMATION Although he never achieved the iconic status of his charismatic father Ernest Tubb, Justin Tubb was one of the few second-ge- neration country singers who had the talent, discipline and ambition to sustain an independent career. His warm vocal style couldn’t have been more different from his father's dry Texas drawl. His relaxed demeanor and stage presence translated well onto radio and records, while his boyish good looks made him a natural for stage and television. By the time he reached age 20, Tubb was already a Grand Ole Opry regular. Justin Tubb recorded for many labels before his death in 1998, but his reputation rests upon his youthful 1953-1959 sides for Decca. A skilled songwriter inspired by Hank Williams, Tubb battled label executives to keep his music country at a time when his contemporaries flirted with teen pop and rock 'n' roll. Not surprisingly, his best records remain catchy, fresh and timeless more than a half-century later. This anthology collects Tubb’s long-unavailable uptempo Deccas, including his two country chart hits with Goldie Hill and his best-selling cover of Marvin Rainwater’s IGotta Go Get My Baby. The styles are diverse, ranging from straight-ahead country to country pop to pure Texas shuffles, including a duet with Roger Miller. Dave Samuelson penned new notes based on Otto Kitsinger’s interviews with Tubb. • WHOLE LOTTA MAN Marvin Rainwater
Chapter 8 – Marvin Rainwater 8 WHOLE LOTTA MAN Marvin Rainwater A larger-than-life character steeped in traditional country music, Marvin Rainwater started his hitmaking career with Gonna Find Me A Bluebird and The Majesty Of Love (a duet with Connie Francis), and went on to top the UK charts in 1958 with Whole Lotta Woman , but after a couple of smaller hits his popularity faded. Somewhere along the line, a real talent — still underrated to this day — missed its way. After battling throat cancer, Rainwater re-emerged during the rockabilly revival of the 1970s and nowadays continues to successfully combine his outside business interests with recording and performing. I was born Marvin Karlton Rainwater on July 2, 1925 in Wichita, Kansas. Mother's maiden name was Stella Arbell Miller and my father was Cicero Percy Rainwater. I had one older brother, Don (George Donald) who died last year and have two younger brothers, Ray (Percy Raymond) and Bob (Robert Eugene), and a sister, Patty (Patricia Lucille). Some say that our surname originated from English, some say French and some say Indian, but I don't know for sure. I am no relation whatsoever to Cedric Rainwater the bluegrass guitarist, as Rainwater was not his real name — he used it as a stage name. Father was an auto and truck mechanic and mother was a housewife. We lived in Wichita and Esben, Kansas; Muskogee and Tulsa, Oklahoma; Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. I studied classical piano when I was a little boy. My mama took in washings — which was a lot of work for her — and got us a piano.

  • JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911-1963) Music Publisher
JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911•1963) Music publisher, booking agent, long•time manager of the Grand Ole Opry, and promoter of Nashville’s music industry, was born in Buffalo Valley, Putnam County, TN. As a young man, Denny found work as a mail clerk with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, parent organization to WSM and the Grand Ole Opry. With growing interest in country music, Denny was running the WSM Artists Service Bureau by 1946, booking Opry talent and other WSM acts. Denny eventually managed the Grand Ole Opry itself. Denny, along with his predecessor, Jack Stapp, is responsible for updating the face of the Opry. As promoters and developers of talent, they helped to transform the Opry from a popular barn dance to a showcase of country superstars, ensuring its growth and long•term success. During their tenure, the cast grew enormously, most major stars became Opry members, and an Opry appearance became a must goal for many performers. In 1954 Denny and Opry star Webb Pierce formed Cedarwood Publishing Company, for a time the most important publishing house in Nashville. Driftwood Music, a companion firm, was a partnership between Denny and Carl Smith, another Opry star. These business interests led to conflict of interest allegations by WSM and eventually Denny’s dismissal. With his knowledge of WSM operations, Denny achieved immediate success as a booking agent. The Jim Denny Bureau served most of the artists Denny had signed while at the Opry. Billboard magazine estimated that, by 1961, the bureau was handling over 3,300 personal appearances worldwide.
