Work: The volunteers will do environmental and renovation work on the territory. The further details will be provided at the time of the workcamp. Volunteers will participate in most activities with the children, performing a variety of different tasks. They will organize workshops - painting, sculpturing, handicrafts, dancing, singing, sports, language lessons, leisure time games.The main aim of the camp is organization of a concert or a performance and an exhibition of works which will be presented at the end. The concert/performance will be organized with the active participation of the children and the volunteers, making an interesting presentation of the national songs, dances, traditions of each country the volunteers come from. Accomodation and food: Volunteers will live in a separate comfortable cottage on the territory of the village. Location and leisure: You will have lots of interesting excursions and visits to historical monuments and museums, which will be organized during the workcamp. The excursions to the following sights will be organized upon the decision of the camp. The proposed list of the excursions is the following (all the visits are for free): Echmiadzin Mother Cathedral, Zvartnots Cathedral ruins, Garni Pagan Temple, Geghard Monastery Complex with a program of PATRIMONITO, Lake Sevan (with a barbecue on the beach). This school is the only one in Armenia where the education is organized using the Braille system. Most of the children stay in the school during the terms and return home only for holidays. The school gives children secondary and specialized education. In 2014 - 2016 volunteers renovated classrooms and bowers. Work: The aim of this workcamp is the renovation of classrooms in the school and maintenance of the territory. Accomodation and food: Volunteers will stay in the dormitories of the school. They will be provided with beds. Location and leisure: You will have lots of interesting excursions and visits to historical monuments and museums, which will be organized during the workcamp. The excursions to the following sights will be organized upon the decision of the camp. This architectural masterpiece is a monument which embodies the centuries-long traditions of Armenian architecture. Unfortunately, Zvartnots has survived only in ruins, as it was completely destroyed by a powerful earthquake in the 10th century. However, even the ruins of this temple give us the idea of its rare and majestic beauty. Work: The major objective of the workcamp is to preserve this historical site for the future generations, to keep it in worthy conditions to allow the visitors to be spiritually enriched and to contemplate the beauty and the splendour of this monument, to support the staff of the Museum of the Zvartnots Cathedral in matters of maintaining the territory and fulfilling different types of work necessary in the particular moment.Activities for the volunteers are as follows:- Maintenance of the territory - removing the over-grown grass, weeds.- National sounds of Zvartnots i learning Armenian national dances, songs.-Cultural program i My impressions about World Heritage . The territory of the Rehabilitation Center is former Governmental rest house. The camp will be opened for the 24rd time and is already a popular and traditional one. Every year the children, who receive their treatment here, look forward to meeting the volunteers in summer. Volunteers bring a lot of ideas, spirit, love, warmth, kindness, and make the stay of the children in this Center a great holiday. They make these children feel that they are needed, full-valued and help them to reveal their talents and abilities. Work: The aim of this workcamp is organization of the leisure time of children with disabilities that receive their treatment in this Centre and environmental work on the territory. Volunteers day will begin with environmental work: maintaining the territory, cleaning children s playground from weeds and grass, painting and some renovation work. After the children finish their therapy, volunteers will join them to draw, sculpture, sing and dance, do physical training, play games.At the end of the camp volunteers and children will organize a farewell concert. Accomodation and food: Volunteers will stay in a separate cottage on the territory of the Rehabilitation Center and sleep in beds. Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. XII/Comm. 46/PG International Schools for Young Astronomers – ISYA The 32nd ISYA, at Byurakan Observatory, Armenia, 12 Sept. - 3 Oct. 2010 Excerpt from a report by Jean-Pierre De Greve, Chairman PG ISYA Introduction The 32nd ISYA 2010, held at Byurakan Observatory, Armenia, was characterized by a very large number of applicants (more than 100) from a large number of countries from the region. Because of the close connections between the observatory and research groups in France and Germany and the fact that for students of those countries grants were available outside the ISYA funding, it was decided also to accept a few students from these countries in order to enlarge the international character of the student body. The following organisations sponsored the ISYA programme: Armenian Astronomical Society (ArAS), Armenian National Academy of Sciences (NAS RA), Armenian State Committee for Science (SCS), Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO), German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, DAAD), International Astronomical Union (IAU), Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (NASL), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The IAU allocated funds provided by the NASL to cover the travel expenses of the participants (visa, insurance, and air fare, local transport, and cultural trips). Ousterhout’s Book “Eastern Medieval Architecture: The Building Traditions of Byzantium and Neighboring Lands”1 Among the historians of Byzantine architecture, professor of the University of Pennsylvania Robert G. Ousterhout holds a prominent place due to the nature of his scientific interests and distinct individuality manifested in a combination of full-scale study of monuments and skillful formulation of historical and theoretical issues. A new perspective on the development of building art, architectural composition, function and symbolic content of buildings and complexes is common to his articles and monographs on the architecture of Constantinople, Jerusalem, and Cappadocia. In his new monograph “Eastern Medieval Architecture: The Building Traditions of Byzantium and Neighboring Lands” [10], along with the Byzantine regions, R. Ousterhout pays attention to the architecture of Christian countries that surrounded Byzantium and had close historical and cultural ties with it, as well as Muslim political entities on the territories torn away from the empire. This fact sets this book apart from most of the previous review studies on Byzantine art and architecture, in which only those territories related to Christian countries were included in the circle of the problems discussed. Some other innovations include a survey of the post-Byzantine architecture up to its later forms of development, discussion of the problem of reproducing the ideas of Byzantine architecture to the rival powers — the Ottoman and Russian empires — and, in the epilogue of the book, to the architecture of Modern and Contemporary times.
