Our Lady of Lourdes Appearing to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. OUR LADY of LOURDES OUR LADY OF LOURDES at St. Zepherin Church Our Lady of Lourdes appearing to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. THE HOLY SPIRIT at St. Ann Church The Holy Spirit window is divided into 12 sections for the 12 fruits of the Ho- ly Spirit; they are listed in Paul’s letter to the Galatians. The 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit are: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faith, Modesty, Self-control, and Chastity. JESUS & JOSEPH at St. Zepherin Church In the Gospel of Luke 3:52, after the finding of Jesus in the Temple it states that Jesus went with Mary & Joseph to Nazareth. “And Jesus ad- vanced in wisdom, age and grace before God and man.” Prayers to St. Joseph, the fos- ter father of Jesus, go back to the early Church. Although he came from King David’s noble lineage, St. Joseph lived a life of great humility and devotion to his Holy Family as a car- penter. The Gospel of Matthew de- scribes Joseph as a “just man” (Mt.1: 19). He is the pa- tron saint of the Universal Church, and people invoke his aid for workers, families, homebuyers and sellers and the grace of a happy death. GOOD SHEPHERD at St. Ann Church In the Gospel of John, Jesus is clearly identified as the Good Shepherd. I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11)” “I am the Good Shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10:14) Today many bishops during liturgies use a crozier, the long walking stick. It is symbolic of a shepherd’s staff. CHRIST THE KING at St. Zepherin Church From the Book of Revelation, at the end of time Christ will return to judge all as King of heaven and earth. Beautiful statue of Saint Ann with her daughter, the young Mary at St. Ann Church Saint Ann’s feast day is July 26. According to tradition, Ann & Joa- chim, were the parents of Our Lady and the grandparents of Jesus. They are mentioned by name in the so- called Book of James, an apocryphal gospel about the infancy of Our Lord. It is also known as the Protevan- gelium of James. Devotion to Saint Ann is especially strong in Canada and Brittany. Saint Ann is the patroness of childless women and expectant mothers. SAINT ZEPHERIN at St. Zepherin Church Feast Day August 26 (old calendar) Was the 14th successor of Peter as Pope, reigned from 199-217. Died a martyr during the persecu- tions of Christians under Emperor Septimius Severus. Was most famous for allowing those who renounced the faith because of fear of persecution and or death, to come back to the Church in good standing. THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY at St. Zepherin Church The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a devotional name used to refer to the interi- or life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her joys and sorrows, her virtues and hidden perfections, and, above all, her virginal love for God the Father, her maternal love for her son Jesus, and her compassionate love for all people. SAINT PAUL at St. Zepherin Church St Paul was an influential figure in the early development of Christianity. His writings and epistles form a key section of the New Testament; St Paul helped to codify and unify the direction of the emerging religion of Christianity. In particular, St Paul emphasized the role that salvation is based on faith and not religious customs. St Paul was both Jewish and a Roman citizen; in his early life, he took part in the persecution of Chris- tians. However, on the road to Damascus, he underwent a con- version and became a commit- ted Christian himself. St. Paul is always picture with a sword and the Bible, for God’s word it is a two edged sword. KNOW YOUR RELIGIOUS IMAGE at St. Ann Church (chapel) DIVINE MERCY The first Mass during which the Divine Mercy image was displayed was on April 28, 1935, the first Sunday after Easter (the Feast of Divine Mercy) and was at- tended by Sr. Faustina (Diary of St. Faustina, item 420). The devotion to Divine Mercy Sunday grew rapidly after its designation by Pope John Paul II and is now widely celebrated by Catholics. The Divine Mercy image is often carried in procession on Divine Mercy Sunday, and is placed in a location in the church so that it can be venerated by those who attended the Mass. KNOW YOUR RELIGIOUS IMAGE at St. Zepherin Church ST. PETER He is the patron saint of popes and of Rome and of many cities that bear his name, such as St. Petersburg and Saint- Pierre. As a former fisherman, he is the pa- tron saint of netmakers, shipbuilders, and fishermen, and, because he holds the “keys of heaven,” he is also the pa- tron saint of locksmiths. Before he became a Saint, Apostle Peter travelled far in order to share the good news about Jesus to the people. He was one of the disciples who was in- strumental in taking the gospel to the world and worked towards the growth of Christianity. St. Peter was not canonized. He was pro- claimed a saint by early Christians be- cause of his martyrdom. In the primitive Church, martyrs were immediately recog- nized as witnessing to the perfection of Christian life on earth, having shown the ultimate proof of their love for Christ by the offering of their lives. KNOW YOUR BEAUTIFUL STATUE at St. Ann Church BLESSED VIRGIN MARY According to the New Testament Mary is the mother of Jesus. She was an ordinary Jewish woman of Nazareth, and she was also known as Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Mary and Virgin Mary. We know almost everything Mary-related from the New Testament. People that have read the New Testament know her husband Joseph, her relatives Zechariah and Elizabeth. We al- so know Magnificat, the song she sang. The Holy Book also states she traveled from Galilee to the hill country and to Bethlehem. We know that she and her husband visited the temple where baby boy Jesus was dedicated when Jesus was 12 years old. And we know she was at the crucifixion of Jesus in Jerusalem. KNOW YOUR STAINED GLASS WINDOW at St. Zepherin Church The picture of the keys is the symbol of Saint Peter and the Papacy. In the Gospel of Matthew chapter 16 it says: And I say to you, you are Pe- ter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatev- er you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. KNOW YOUR BEAUTIFUL STATUE at St. Ann Church THIS STATUE OF MARY IS IN ST. ANN’S CHAPEL AND IS HONORED BY OUR PARISH CHILDREN ON MOTHER’S DAY DURING OUR FIRST COMMUNION MASSES. Mary, Mother of God. Mary, sweet peace and dearest consolation of suffering mortal: you are the fount whence springs the current of solicitude that brings unto our soil unceasing fecundation. From your abode, enthroned on heaven’s height, in mercy deign to hear my cry of woe and to the radiance of your mantle draw my voice that rises with so swift a flight. You are my mother, Mary, and shall be my life, my stronghold, my defense most thorough; and you shall be my guide on this wild sea. If vice pursues me madly on the morrow, if death harasses me with agony; come to my aid and dissipate my sorrow! He asked her to tell the Church to honor his Most Sacred Heart. Jesus made the promise; “In excess of the mercy of my heart, I promise that my all powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the Grace of final repentance; they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the Sacraments and my heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.” KNOW YOUR STAINED GLASS WINDOW at St. Zepherin Church MARY OF BETHANY WASHING JESUS’ FEET In the Gospel of John, Mary of Bethany is the woman who anoints Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume and nard. She is the sister of Martha and Lazarus. KNOW YOUR STAINED GLASS WINDOW at St. Zepherin Church THE BOY JESUS IN THE TEMPLE In Luke’s Gospel, 2:41- 52, after three days search- ing for the boy Jesus, Mary & Joseph find him in the Temple, setting in the midst of teachers listening to them and asking questions. Rhoades “It was 161 years ago today, on February 11, 1858, that the Blessed Virgin Mary first appeared to the 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous at the grotto of Massabielle near the village of Lourdes in France. It was the first of 18 apparitions. At this first apparition, Bernadette first saw a light, then she saw a young lady who she said was “beautiful, more beautiful than any other.” She did not know it was the Virgin Mary. Bernadette said that the lady smiled at her and spoke to her with much tenderness and love. She described the woman to others as ‘the beautiful lady.’ She was beautiful in every way, not just physically. It is hardly surprising that Mary should be beautiful, given that – during the last apparition on March 25th, 1858, she revealed her name to Bernadette. She said: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Is this not the greatest beauty of Mary of Nazareth, the Mother of Jesus? She was without sin from the first moment of her existence. She was preserved by God from every stain of original sin. We call her Mary most holy. Her holiness was perfect. That’s why she’s the greatest of all the saints, the Queen of All Saints. That’s the patron title I gave to Bishop Dwenger High School some years ago, when I gave to your high school Our Lady of Lourdes as patroness. The young Bernadette saw the beauty of Mary.

The answer of Jesus is that God’s response to the messes of this world is the Thursday: Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3; Ps 65:10-13; mystery of saving love in Jesus Christ and the outpouring Mt 5:20-26 of an empowering Spirit. Western church architecture often tops a church building Friday: 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16; Ps 27:7-9abc, 13-14; Mt 5:27-32 with a spire, indicating humanity’s reach to a transcendent God. The Eastern Church responds with onion-shaped Saturday: 1 Kgs 19:19-21; Ps 16:1b-2a, 5, 7-10; domes, indicating the Spirit’s being poured down upon Mt 5:33-37 humanity precisely at this locale, the gathering of the faithful for the Divine Liturgy. This familiar design Sunday: Dt 8:2-3, 14b-16a; Ps 147:12-15, 19-20; encodes a great mystery: here, at the Lord’s table, we 1 Cor 10:16-17; Jn 6:51-58 experience the outpouring of the Spirit for the life of the world.

    Carmelite echoes in the Lourdes Grotto Johan Bergström-Allen, T.O.C. Johan is a Lay Carmelite and convenor of Carmelite Spirituality Groups in the northern English cities of Leeds and York where he runs the Projects and Publications Office of the British Province of Carmelites. As well as being involved in the Third Order formation programme of his province, Johan is a formator for volunteers working in Lourdes. When the editor of Carmel in the World asked me to write an article about the link between Carmelite spirituality and Lourdes, the famous shrine of Our Lady in south-western France, I was very happy to do so because it’s a tremendously important place in my life. I’ve been lucky enough to have gone there on pilgrimage many times, including several visits in the Jubilee Year th of 2008 which marks the 150 anniversary of Mary’s apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous.   • Our Lady of Lourdes Church
    STORY AND PHOTOS BY BY HERMINE LEES SISTER NANCY MUNRO, CSJ STAFF WRITER THE FACES OF GOD: OUR LADY OF LOURDES CHURCH teachers, returning for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Two signers interpreted for the hearing impaired and before the final blessing, wedding anniversary couples for the month were called to the sanctuary where they were congratulated and blessed by the assembly. After Mass many parishioners stayed for coffee and donuts in the parish hall. “It’s all good here,” says OLL School principal Patricia Hager. “It is so welcoming. The Catholicity, the identity — it is here. No matter what, whenever you come here, there is always something going on in the parish. And the priests support the school 100 percent. I am proud the children write letters to those in RCIA. I am proud that the children participate in ‘Locks of Love’ and they donate their hair for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Stand Up to Cancer. I am so proud of what these children do here, and all grades participate.” Parishioners also are conscious that they can never become complacent. Members of the Parish Council often ask themselves, “Is there anything we still need to do to be more hospitable?” Welcome packets are given to those new to the parish. On the second Sunday of the month anniversary couples are recognized with a blessing and a red rose. Every ministry group within the parish takes its turn hosting a Donut Sunday. The renovated Our Lady of Lourdes Church was rededicated in 1995 after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. “The people try to make hospitality real here,” says Father Loftus, whose welcoming blanket is tangible proof.
