A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

A teacher was testing the children in her Sunday school class to see if they understood the

concept of getting to heaven. PARISHIONERS:

She asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my Luz Villanueva, Eleanor Rieth Loretta Forthofer, Dorothy Tomshe money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?" "NO!" the children answered. Eva-Maria Peters, Marianne Rieth

"If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would Amy White, Jarmila Kos Kathleen Brezinski, Anna that get me into Heaven?" Again, the answer was, "NO!" Patricia Welsh, Maebelle Fill Now she was smiling. Hey, they're getting it, she thought! Marty Lima, Elvira Quester

"Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into Heaven?" she asked. Again, they all answered, "NO!"

She was just bursting with pride for them.

"Well," she continued, "then how can I get into Heaven?" A five-year-old boy shouted out,

"YOU GOTTA BE DEAD!" FAMILY AND FRIENDS SERVING OUR COUNTRY: My brothers and sisters, this funny story illustrates that good works aren’t enough to “earn” a Charles Godles, Christopher place with the Blessed Trinity in Heaven. There is nothing we can “do” to get there. A place Barnhart, Jason Bender, Thomas in Heaven is a gratuitous gift of God, which he bestows through grace. If we are to Daley, Capt. Richard Robinson, accomplish good works, that should be done as a sign of our loving relationship with God. As Tom Fisher, Anthony Burns, we grow closer to Christ, and thus act more like Him, we pray that in His infinite mercy, we Naughton, Allen Fish, 2nd Lt. Louis may be given a place with Him in His kingdom. Rios, Justin Callison, Quinn Rambo Capt. Shelby Stratton, Grant Rev. Edward J. Smith, Pastor Bartlett, Sgt. Tyler Corwin, John McGlynn, Cpl. GOD IS MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS At moments in our lives we may wonder how we know who God is or what God is like. Today’s readings help us to feel secure in placing our faith in God and being assured of God’s unfailing love. When went up the mountain as the Lord had commanded him, God powerfully described himself, “The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” Jesus shows us the depths of this life of God. He came not to condemn

the world but to save it. As people in relationship with God, we often fail. We walk away from God’s ways, fall into . sinfulness, and then, with the Lord’s grace, come to our senses and return. God’s words to Moses and the very life of Jesus show us that when we do so, we can still rely on God’s mercy and kindness, because love is God’s very nature.
