Playing real individuals on stage, and speaking a text created solely from those individuals’ own words, presents actors with numerous challenges. By analysing these actors’ processes in relation to the teaching and theories of actor trainers, we are able to identify the ways in which they adapt current rehearsal and per- formance techniques and invent new strategies in the service of playing a real person. Academic studies have tended to overlook actors when using first-hand interview material, preferring instead to talk to direct- ors and writers. It is this imbalance that this book aims to redress. Documentary Theatre The popularity of documentary theatre shows little sign of abating. In the arsenal of political theatre, documentary forms have become the weapon of choice. Only 25 years ago, when Derek Paget first wrote of the use of tape recorders to make documentary theatre, he noted that documentary forms were situated at the ‘edges of the professional theatre’ (1987: 317).

Based on true stories, it is a poignant and powerful window into their lives after being convicted, their legal proceedings and the realities of death row. From being performed in front of politicians, attorneys and exonerees to being adapted for film with a star cast, this award-winning play continues to provoke discussion. The play focuses on innocence, perhaps the most compelling argument for the abolition of the death penalty. While there is any chance of executing an innocent, how can the death penalty ever be justified? Amicus's remit is beyond those who have an innocence claim. Through coordinating internships, casework and training, we fight for fair trials for those on death row. As the play demonstrates, factors such as racial bias and the politicisation of the court system are instrumental in many convictions. We believe that for justice to truly be served, as poignantly put by Delbert, the system should be about "how one looks at other human beings". We are very grateful to the writers for supporting this production, and we are indebted to our stellar cast and directors for this very special performance. At least a fraction of them are bound to be innocent. The criminal justice system is far from being immune to error. If we are going to use the death penalty, we should at least confront that fact. Playwrights Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen confront it head­on in “The Exonerated,” a 100­minute drama with no intermission. The play tells the stories of six people sent to death row on wrongful convictions, all of whom were later exonerated. Richkard Saint­Victor portrays Robert, a horse groomer sent to death row for a crime he didn’t commit. Lee Martin, right, plays Georgia, his wife, as well as Blank and Jensen’s work had a successful off­Broadway run starting in additional characters throughout the play. Nick Munson 2002, and it was adapted into a made­for­TV movie in 2005. It starred (background) also portrays multiple characters that help to create the world of “The Exonerated”. Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon and others. A production of “The Exonerated” by the Indiana University Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance plays this week in the Wells­Metz Theatre. The show opened Friday night with both playwrights in attendance. The most disturbing element of “The Exonerated” is the element of truth. The script is based on actual case files and public records, supplemented by interviews with 40 former death row inmates who had been exonerated.
