Reserves defy South Fremantle in an epic Elimination. Tick. The League side produces its finest performance of the season to book a Grand Final spot. Tick. It was the perfect day for a football club that is well and truly rolling in September and by the looks of things will be hard to stop. Despite finishing second on the ladder to hosts South Fremantle, the Tigers found an extra gear in the second semi-final to defeat the minor premiers by 47 points. Claremont captain couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to the Optus WAFL Finals Series. “It was a massive day for the club,” Mitchell said. “To start the way we did with the Colts and play some outstanding football. The Reserves have come from 1-3 to make the Prelim. “For us to play the way we did in the League was sensational. It was all off the back of pressure and defence – that’s how we have always wanted to play.” As the final siren went and the Claremont crowd gathered to meet

the playing group, Mitchell quickly huddled the group in for a message, it’s clear the job wasn’t done. “I have been in this position before ten years ago, playing in my first WAFL Grand Final,” he said. “I was lucky enough to have a couple of gurus in Clancy Rudiforth and Andrew Browne leading that side.” “The message was to stay humble and know that the job isn’t done. We played really, really well and to enjoy that moment because that is why we play footy. “We know we still have a job to do but it was a nice moment.” Today’s Preliminary Final will decide the Tigers’ opponent with South Fremantle hosting West in a do-or-die final. The Bulldogs have been the team to beat all season. Seven wins from eight starts has proven their premiership credentials but standing in their way of a dream decider is a dogged Falcons outfit. Returning players will boost the line-up and give the home team the best possible chance of returning the following week. West Perth overcame Perth by 11 points in one of the games of the season to secure a spot in the Preliminary Final. The Falcons leaders stood up again in the pivotal moments to secure a memorable victory, with the likes of Aaron Black, Luke Meadows and Tyler Keitel delivering on the big stage. The only previous clash between the Falcons and Bulldogs this season saw the latter victorious by just eight points in a tight tussle, giving both sides plenty of confidence heading into today’s final. Coincidentally, all three remaining League coaches played in a West Perth premiership together, adding just another layer to an intriguing season. Whatever the result on Sunday, the final two weeks of the Optus WAFL Season will reach an exciting climax. Three quality teams are all vying for a premiership no one will ever forget in season 2020.

Meanwhile, and in the interests of squaring the memorabilia ledger between the competing teams today, I thought I would highlight an unusual collectable I was recently shown – a clipboard. Back in the 1980s, marketing managers would slap a WAFL club logo on almost anything in an effort to make an extra buck. This South Fremantle clipboard is a throwback from that time, while the WANFL clipboard, featuring a Marlboro logo, probably dates to the late 1970s. I’ve not seen too many clipboard survivors, but I suspect they would be popular at auction nowadays because of the great imagery on them. Given that WAFL Collectables has been stretched out to two pages this week, I’ve also got an opportunity to look at some of the more interesting sales of late. One that went ahead with little fanfare was the East Perth Online Auction, which featured 16 doors from the club’s old changeroom lockers. In recent years, Claremont has sold off several of its lockers at its annual fundraising auctions, while West Perth sold the doors from three of its old lockers at the club’s 2019 gala auction. The Royals followed suit this year, and found plenty of interested bidders for the individual doors on offer. The highest price paid was $425, by a Kalgoorlie- based collector who won the battle for the #9 door that carried the names of Jackie Guhl, Jack Leadbitter, Syd Jackson, Larry Kickett and Lucio Baroni. A Melbourne-based collector snagged the #1 door bearing the names of Ben Wallish, “Digger” Thomas, , Shawn Colbung and Paul Ridley for $355, while it was particularly pleasing to see Marilyn Pitter secure the door bearing the name of her husband, All in all, it shows that Eddie, and Michael Swan buy the doors for his own there is still plenty of #44 and his brother’s #35. interest in rare WAFL Meanwhile a somewhat unusual item was sold memorabilia, especially online just last weekend by a former medal and badge those pieces that are maker. linked to the heyday of the The retiree sold off a replica , which competition. looked pretty much as good as the real thing.
