The choice of discerning listeners across the Northwest and beyond. <>@ =</7@=<G=C@A;/@B>6=<3=<:7<3/B The Tacoma Concert Band, founded in 1981 by its Conductor and Music Director Robert Musser, enjoys a regional, national and international reputation. The band’s mission is to provide the Puget Sound community with a professional quality wind ensemble performing the very finest symphonic band music; to offer a high-quality performance opportunity to local wind and percussion musicians; to support and encourage the region’s school band programs; and to reaffirm the community concert band’s position in American music. From its beginning concert at Stadium High School in 1981, through a progression of awards, commissions, European tours, and guest artists, Page 4 SOUSA! - May 2, 2015 (cont.) the TCB has established itself as the Northwest’s premier community symphonic band. This summer, 2015, the band will perform in Spain. The TCB performs an eclectic blend of musical styles ranging from Bach to Broadway and Strauss to Sousa, with its roots in the tradition of the finest European and American bands and extending through to new music commissioned especially for the band. The band has received many awards, including the prestigious Sudler Scroll of the John Philip Sousa Foundation, a national award for community bands of outstanding quality, and awards for excellence from the Tacoma and Pierce County Arts Commissions. In the summer of 2007, the TCB was invited to perform at an international band festival in southern France, and in 2011 it made a triumphant tour of Europe, with concerts in Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest . Jason Gilliam is a native of Tacoma, Washington. He holds the Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he studied with Peter Ellefson, Ron Munson, and Steve Fissel. Jason currently holds the position of Lecturer of Euphonium and Trombone at the Pacific Lutheran University, and is also a Kindergarten teacher in the Steilacoom School District. Jason has enjoyed an ever increasing demand as a clinician and euphonium soloist. Gilliam has been a featured euphonium artist at the 2012 International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Linz, Austria, the Northern Rockies Tuba Euphonium Festival, Monroe High School Wind Ensemble, Emerald Ridge High School Concert Band, the Northwest Regional International Tuba Euphonium Conference, the University of Idaho, University of Oregon, University of Victoria, Pacific Lutheran University, Puget Brass, Brass Band Northwest, the Harvey Phillips Northwest Big Brass Bash, Sun City Concert Band (Sun City, Arizona), Sitka High School Band (Sitka, Alaska), Tacoma Community College Wind Ensemble, Tacoma Community College Orchestra, and the Northshore Concert Band (Evanston, Illinois). Gilliam was the solo euphoniumist in the Tacoma Concert Band for over 20 years, and was a featured soloist in over 45 performances. In 2011, Jason was a featured soloist with the band on a tour of Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest. Jason also was soloist with the band on their 2007 tour of La Croix Valmer, France, and will be a featured soloist when the band tours Spain in the summer of 2015. Other performance credits include the Seattle Symphony, Tacoma Symphony, Auburn Symphony, The Tubadours, and the Northwest Mahler Festival Orchestra. Jason Gilliam is a Yamaha Performing Artist, and plays the Yamaha 842S euphonium, 632 Eb tuba, and the 882GO tenor trombone. Page 5 SOUSA! - May 2, 2015 William Dyer is the director of music at Grays Harbor College, in Aberdeen, WA. He holds degrees in music from Northwestern University and the University of Puget Sound. He is presently conducting research on the development and maintenance of identity in aging recreational musicians for his doctoral dissertation through Boston University. William achieved National Certification in music education in 2002. He was awarded a Fulbright award by the U.S. Department of State in 2008, resulting in a teaching assignment at Duncanrig Secondary School in East Kilbride, Scotland. In the spring of 2011 he was presented the Yale University Distinguished Music Educator Award. An accomplished trombonist, William has performed with a variety of amateur and professional ensembles both in the United States and abroad. Most recently William was featured as a soloist with the Tacoma Concert Band on their 2011 tour of Eastern Europe, and will be featured in Spain in the summer of 2015. He has studied with Patricia Crossen, Steven Fissel, Mark Lawrence, and Frank Crisafulli. Heidi Vandorford, mezzo-soprano, known for her rich sound and her versatility, is establishing her international career in some of the world’s finest opera theaters. The Seattle-born singer has recently made three important debuts at world-renowned opera houses including Washington National Opera, Gran Teatre de Liceu in Barcelona, and Chicago Opera Theater. Equally at home in contemporary repertoire (Dead Man Walking, Death in Venice) and the Wagnerian repertoire (where she has sung alongside tenor Placido Domingo in two different productions), Ms. Vanderford also has had considerable success in works of Rossini (Il viaggio a Reims) and Verdi (Il Trovatore, La Traviata). As a Wagnerian, she has sung not only Valkyrie and Flower Maiden roles, but also the solo role of Flosshilde in the Das Rheingold. Ms. Vanderford also is an exponent of the song and concert repertoire, particularly Spanish works (El Amor Brujo), and of chamber works for voice and classical guitar. During a Spanish-song workshop in Granada, Spain, Page SOUSA! - May 2, 2015 (cont.) she was selected to sing in master classes with mezzo-soprano legend Teresa Berganza. Among Ms. Vanderford’s recent concert successes was a Mahler Symphony No. 2 engagement with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Ecuador (Quito, 2009-2010). Ms. Vanderford has been especially fortunate in her training, which has included challenging and rewarding assignments at the young artist programs of Glimmerglass Opera, Opera Theater of St. Louis and Cincinnati Opera. In three summer seasons at Opera Theater of St. Louis, she understudied the title role in Offenbach's The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein in addition to singing Oenone in Rameau's Hippolytus et Aricie. She also has considerable experience in oratorio repertoire, and has performed Handel's Messiah, the Verdi Requiem and the alto solo in the Rachmaninoff Vespers to great acclaim. Heidi Vanderford is a graduate of the highly regarded Indiana University School of Music, where she sang roles such as Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Lucretia in The Rape of Lucretia, and Aunt Cecilia in Mark Adamo’s Little Women. Favorite roles include Charlotte from Werther and the title role in Carmen. She is a winner of the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale competition, as well as being a regional finalist in the Pacific Northwest Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions and a district winner of the Portland MONC auditions. Morris Northcutt is a native of Tacoma where he attended Clover Park High School and the University of Puget Sound. Morris has been a member of and a featured soloist for the Tacoma Concert Band since 1990. He has performed with numerous musical organizations throughout the Northwest and abroad including the Tacoma Symphony, Tacoma Civic Chorus, Evergreen Brass Quintet, Philharmonic Brass, and The Swing Reunion Orchestra where he is currently lead trumpet. Morris most recently had the honor of soloing with French trumpet player Dennis Gautier and his Big Band as a part of the 70th anniversary of the Allied landing in Southern France. Morris will also be featured in Spain this summer with the Tacoma Concert Band. Mr. Northcutt is a local entrepreneur and is active in the community serving as a member of the Lakewood Rotary Club and the St. Francis Cabrini Strategic Planning Committee. Morris is a real estate investor and the Founder of CloudEasy4, a company that provides digital and print media and marketing services for businesses across the country.
