This award was initiated in 2001 by the club in memory of club member Ian Ryan who tragically died at the end of the 1999 Kangaroo Hoppet. The award is to a Club member who has worked hard behind the scenes to make sure programs and activities are provided to other Club members. The inaugural 2001 winner was Judy Bottomley. To view past winners check out the club website <http://birkebeiner.org.au/about/ian-ryan-award/>. Having enjoyed holidays in Mt Beauty for many years, when Trish and John retired, they sold their home in Lismore and moved to Mt Beauty at the start of 2008. Trish is a very caring and civic minded person and she quickly became involved in many community causes. She currently volunteers with Red Cross, is on the committee of the UKV Community Associa- tion, and has provided classroom assistance at Mt Beauty Primary School. But her greatest commit- ment is as a Community Visitor on behalf of the Office of the Public Advocate, regularly travelling as far afield as Cobram. Community Visitors are volunteers who visit Victorian accommodation facilities for people with a disability or mental illness. They monitor and report on the adequacy of services provid- ed, in the interests of residents and patients. Fortunately for us, Trish and John were interested in learning to ski. Shortly after their arrival in Mt Beauty, they made friends with a number of Birkies, joined the club and came along to the annual Cas- serole Dinner in June. At the time, the previous club secretary had just retired and we had been unable to find a willing re- placement at the AGM a month earlier. At the casserole dinner, someone fortuitously asked Trish if she would be willing to take on the job. I can imagine Trish saying something like, “Oh, yes, if there’s not too much involved, I suppose I could do that.” And so it began. Trish has been a very capable and conscientious secretary for the past six years. She has seen off two presidents, Jim Gargan and Helen L’Huillier, and she is now organising Ronice into some sort of order. During those past six years, Trish has been a regular volunteer in many roles. She has helped out at almost every club race day, social func- tion and working bee. She has been a Hoppet volunteer, both on snow and in the Hoppet Shop, helping at mailouts and on bag packing days. She took over the role of Hoppet Shop co- ordinator. And she has been one of our club vol- unteers at bike events and the Mt Beauty Half Marathon. In her spare time, what little there is of it, Trish plays tennis, learns French, cycles and swims. I think you will agree that Trish is a gem, and a very worthy recipient of the Ian Ryan award. How lucky are we that she joined our club. Congratulations, Trish. And thank-you for every- thing you do. Helen L’Huillier, June 14, 2014 Birkebeiner Bulletin 2 It is instructive to note the com- position of this committee. The BNSC members are as follows. Finn Marsland (National Coach & High Performance), Paul Ko- vacs (Athlete Representative), Ashleigh Spittle (Athlete Repre- sentative), Allison McArdle (Coach Education & Fundrais- ing), Ronice Goebel (Victoria Grassroots) and Andrew Walker (Rules & Officials). The fol- lowing link to the club site that shows a profile of club members who have contribute to State and National XC skiing over the years. http://birkebeiner.org.au/about/ member-contributions-to-state- national-skiing/ History of Skiing http://youtu.be/bJRsottYndI is a link to a youtube video about "The History of Skiing” (7min 42sec) and it is interesting view- ing. Birkebeiner Bulletin 3 Australian Junior Championship Format As announced by the SSA Cross Country Committee (SAXC) earlier this year, the 2014 Australian Junior Championship for Cross Country Skiing will be held at Perisher on July 26/27 as a stand alone weekend separate to the Open and FIS events. At the recent SAXC meeting in Mt Beauty the format of the events on this weekend were confirmed as follows: Saturday July 26 AM: Classic Sprint Time Trial and Finals Saturday July 26 PM: Trial "Cross Country Cross" Obstacle Course (non-championship event) Sunday July 27 AM: Freestyle Distance Events The "Cross Country Cross" event on the Saturday afternoon aligns with the new event on the pro- gram for the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer. The exact format for this event is still being developed, however it will likely involve a combination of jumps and turns designed to challenge all-round skiing skills as well as head-to-head racing. In addition, the distances for these events were confirmed as follows: The main reason that the distances have come down slightly relative to recent years is to promote junior skiers learning how to ski fast and at a high intensity throughout the race, rather than pacing the race at a lower intensity just to finish. There are plenty of opportunities for juniors to ski longer distances at other events during the season, and the top Australian juniors will compete in the Open FIS races over 5/10km for women and 10/15km for men. The sprint distances and courses used will be determined by the race organisers dependent on snow conditions. There was also discussion amongst the committee regarding why the junior men are skiing longer than the junior women in the U16 category, when they are physiologically similar at this age and should also be learning how to ski faster first before building endurance. The key factor here was a desire to begin stepping the distance up towards the World Junior Championship and Youth Olym- pic distances, which are 5km for women and 10km for men (3.3km and 5km in the relays). Regarding techniques, Classic was chosen for the Sprint and Freestyle for the Distance races as these match up with the styles at the World Junior Championships next year. The format of these events will be reviewed following the winter, however the general intention is to keep the same format for 2015 with alternating styles. This year this means that the techniques are the same for the corre- sponding Australian Championship FIS races at Perisher the following weekend, however this tim- ing may not be the case in subsequent years. Online race entries for the 2014 Australian Junior Championship are already open and can be found via the PXC Website and AUSXC Calendar Page. Birkebeiner Bulletin 4 Birkie Skidoo Trailer (some history) Back in the autumn of 1981 Alex Chapman (life member) and Chris Maloney built the skidoo trailer that is still being used today. It has been dragged all over the High Plains and been involved in every ski race or event that the club has organised at Falls Creek since 1981 i.e. 34 years of use. Also all other clubs that organise races and events from the Nordic Bowl have used the trailer over this period. There are a couple of big advantages of this design of trailer: 1. two people can be transported on the back of the trailer (standing) this, with two on the skidoo means a total of four people can be transported and 2. with a person standing on the trailer it is much easier to set a race course as flags and poles can be placed as the skidoo moves. It has had a few repairs done to it over this time and recently Bob Flower decided to use his handyman skills in ‘skidoo trail- er design’, welding and painting to do a major overall. He also relocated the position of the axle to better balance the trailer. Thanks Bob, great job. By Paul L’Huillier Pictured are two photos of Bob on the job and one of the completed repairs. Forum Nordicum 3 Deine Belohnung. Ski Championships Lahti will host the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2017 for a historic seventh time. We are extremely proud to be the first city to achieve this record. To celebrate our unique history, we decided to name the event the Centenary Championships. The Centenary Championships are both an exciting and carefully prepared world-class sports event and one of the festivities that celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence. A rare occasion for us Finns – and hopefully for our international guests. Lahti offers an optimal setting for record-breaking performances. The traditional venue has undergone extensive renovation and is now a fully functioning stadium that meets today’s requirements. We are also proud to have Vierumäki Olympic Training Center as our athlete’s village that allows the athletes to unwind and focus all their energy on performing at their best. We hope that the 2017 World Championships will leave their mark on future decades of sports events in Lahti and in Finland. The event has gained a great deal of popularity among young people, and we will soon have a new generation of volunteers for sports events.

  • News from Vasaloppets Veteranklubb January 2021 No
News from Vasaloppets Veteranklubb January 2021 No. 1 MINI-PROFILE Board member 819 Bosse Wallin Vasalopps veteran 819 Bosse Wallin was born in the village of Östnor in Mora. It's not surprising that he started skiing given where he came from. Östnor has trained a number of talented skiers. The first IFK Mora winner in Vasaloppet, Anders Ström came from Östnor as well as both Nils "Mora-Nisse" Karlsson (nine wins in Vasaloppet and a 50 km Olympic gold in St Moritz in 1948) and Gunnar Eriksson (relay gold in St Moritz in 1948 and world championship gold in 50 km in Lake Placid). We should also mention our first "50-racer", Vasalopps veteran number 9 Gösta Aronsson, also from Östnor and related to Bosse! Bosse says that when Gösta Aronsson finished his 50th race between Sälen and Mora, Bosse caught up with Gösta between Gopshus and Hökberg and accompanied him up to the control station in Hökberg. Bosse Wallin had prominent role models in Östnor– there is no doubt about that! Bosse himself has been a sharp Vasaloppet skier in his day! How about the time 4:53 in 1983? Bosse became a Vasaloppet veteran in 2013 and has also ridden Stafettvasan, Kortvasan and Halvvasan as well as Marcialonga, Engadin Ski marathon, Vasaloppet China, Birkebeinern and Svalbard Ski marathon and a number of other races. When Bosse returned to his childhood and youth in Östnor, he tells us that many other young people, started in Lilla Vasaloppet. Getting to and from school on skis during the winter was the rule than the exception.

  • 30 Jahre Skiclub SAXONIA Dresden

  • Rules of FIS Worldloppet Cup 2019
Rules of FIS Worldloppet Cup 2019 The Worldloppet Ski Federation in co-operation with the Cross-Country Committee of the International Ski Federation instituted the FIS MARATHON CUP in season 1999/2000, renamed in 2015 to FIS WORLDLOPPET CUP (WLC). The objectives of the Cup are to improve the status of long distance competitions by attracting elite racers and to increase media and spectator interest in long distance racing. 1. Qualification Entry to the FIS Worlloppet Cup is open to all male and female athletes with an ACTIVE FIS CODE who qualify for the elite wave in the WLC events. 2. Race selection Venues for races in the FIS Worldloppet Cup may vary from season to season. The programme will be decided by the Worldloppet Executive Board in consultation with the FIS Sub-Committee for Popular Cross-Country Skiing. Races must be at least 42 km in length and not more than two of the races in the programme should be under 50 km in length. Races will, wherever possible, be spread geographically to include at least one race from Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the Rest of the World and should be divided as evenly as possible between races in classical and free techniques. Priority for participation in the FIS Worldloppet Cup will be given to races which are members of Worldloppet. Races wishing to be selected should submit their bids to the CEO of Worldloppet. Where it is thought desirable to include races from outside Worldloppet (for example, where fewer than 6 Worldloppet nominations are received; to balance the programme between classic and free techniques; or for other exceptional reasons), the Worldloppet may invite other races of a proven standard to be considered to take part in the competition.
