Set in a devastated future world controlled by powerful feudal barons, INTO THE BADLANDS tells the story of a ruthless warrior, Sunny (Daniel Wu, Tai Chi Zero), and a young boy, M.K. (Aramis Knight, The Dark Knight Rises), who embark on a spiritual odyssey across a dangerous land. The Badlands, as they are known, is controlled by rival Barons who have a stronghold on all resources and enforce their rule through loyal soldiers called ‘Clippers’. One such warrior is Sunny who, demonstrating lethal proficiency in martial arts, has risen swiftly through the ranks to become Head Clipper and trusted advisor to the merciless Quinn (Marton Csokas, The Lord of the Rings). When a new Baron, The Widow (Emily Beecham, 28 Weeks Later) enters the fray, the violence escalates and Sunny encounters M.K. for the first time. As The Widow continues her campaign against Quinn, the destinies of the stoic assassin and the impetuous teenager become intertwined. In their evolution as teacher and student, each will discover his true purpose; together, they will embark on a quest that could mean the difference between chaos and enlightenment for everybody in the Badlands. INTO THE BADLANDS also stars Oliver Stark (Luther) as Ryder, Orla Brady (Fringe) as Lydia; Sarah Bolger (Once Upon a Time) as Jade; Ally Ioannides (Parenthood) as Tilda; and Madeleine Mantock (Edge of Tomorrow) as Veil. From AMC Studios, INTO THE BADLANDS is created by executive producers/showrunners/writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville), and executive produced by Oscar®-nominated producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg (Pulp Fiction, Contagion), director David Dobkin (Shanghai Nights), fight director Stephen Fung (House of Fury) and Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero). Ti (Stephen Chow) is a poor father who works all day, everyday at a construction site to make sure his son Dicky Chow (Xu Jian) can attend an elite private school. Despite his father’s good intentions to give his son the opportunities he never had, Dicky, with his dirty and tattered clothes and none of the “cool” toys stands out from his schoolmates like a sore thumb. Ti can’t afford to buy Dicky any expensive toys and goes to the best place he knows to get new stuff for Dicky – the junk yard! While out “shopping” for a new toy for his son, Ti finds a mysterious orb and brings it home for Dicky to play with. To his surprise and disbelief, the orb reveals itself to Dicky as a bizarre “pet” with extraordinary powers. Armed with his “CJ7” Dicky seizes this chance to overcome his poor background and shabby clothes and impress his fellow schoolmates for the first time in his life.

Preliminary Production Notes CONTACT: Fresh Fear 1626 N. Wilcox Ave., #209 Los Angeles, CA 90028 323 466-2813 [email protected] Meet Eddy Tsai. He hates being Asian. He’s even changed his last name to “Richards” and lies that he was adopted by Caucasian parents. His lifelong dream is to become a serial killer like his hero Ted Bundy. He’s spent years working toward this dream by conditioning his body through strenuous workouts and training his mind by reading serial killer books. CHINK 2 Eddy’s biggest weakness is that he feels too much, and serial killers must control their emotions. When he hits on a beautiful, blond receptionist at work and makes a fool of himself, he feels humiliated and then angry. He decides that she will be his first victim. Eddy stalks and kills her, but no one suspects him. A serial killer needs at least three victims, so Eddy also murders his parents. He is well on his way to achieving his dream, but then he meets the boss’ newest hire, Karena. CHINK 3 Born in Hong Kong, Karena is sassy and beautiful and sees something in Eddy that reminds her of her little brother. Karena gets Eddy to come out of his shell and as they get to know each other, she inadvertently helps him realize that being the stereotypical Asian male (smart, quiet, hardworking, shy) is actually to his advantage. It means no one really sees who he is. It means he can be a serial killer and no one would ever suspect him.

Martial arts cinema has often pushed filmmakers to expand the boundaries of cinematic form and technique. Is this commercial moviemaking or avant-garde cinema? In either case, the genre continues to adapt, diversify, and thrill audiences with its balanced mixture of discipline and fun. This course surveys martial arts movies from around the world (Hong Kong/China, Japan, the U.S., Thailand, Korea, Brazil, Norway, etc.) to investigate the seemingly inexhaustible global appeal of cinematic/martial arts. This class emphasizes the “traditional” art of critical film analysis, as applied to martial arts cinema. Course requirements include attendance for weekly class meetings/screenings, quizzes, completion of weekly homework tasks (including readings, home film viewings, and written reports), and a final paper, to be assigned midway through the term. Each student must exercise discipline in order to become a cinematic martial artist with a black belt in critical analysis! REQUIREMENTS: Attendance/Participation 10% 4 reading quizzes 20% (5 points each) 5 film reports 50% (10 points each) Final paper (due 12/12) 20% [Optional extra credit] ??% (up to 5 points) REQUIRED READINGS Readings are listed on the course schedule; students must finish all required readings by the date under which they are listed.

To achieve this aim, I analyze two key developments that are contributing to the rapidly shifting shape and style of the Chinese film industry: 1) increasing post-production collaborations with film industry practitioners and firms from South Korea – an important trading partner for China; and 2) the popular reception of Chinese films on the international filmestiv f al circuit, in particular the responses of a diverse group of filmmakers, creative practitioners, and foreign critics at the Busan International Film Festival (hereafter BIFF), which celebrated its 18th year in 2013.
