  • Versatile Fox Sports Broadcaster Kenny Albert Continues to Pair with Biggest Names in Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Erik Arneson, FOX Sports Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 [email protected] VERSATILE FOX SPORTS BROADCASTER KENNY ALBERT CONTINUES TO PAIR WITH BIGGEST NAMES IN SPORTS Boothmates like Namath, Ewing, Palmer, Leonard ‘Enhance Broadcasts … Make My Job a Lot More Fun’ Teams with Former Cowboy and Longtime Broadcast Partner Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston and Sideline Reporter Laura Okmin for FOX NFL in 2016 With an ever-growing roster of nearly 250 teammates (complete list below) that includes iconic names like Joe Namath, Patrick Ewing, Jim Palmer, Jeremy Roenick and “Sugar Ray” Leonard, versatile FOX Sports play-by-play announcer Kenny Albert -- the only announcer currently doing play-by-play for all four major U.S. sports (NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL) -- certainly knows the importance of preparation and chemistry. “The most important aspects of my job are definitely research and preparation,” said Albert, a second-generation broadcaster whose long-running career behind the sports microphone started in high school, and as an undergraduate at New York University in the late 1980s, he called NYU basketball games. “When the NFL season begins, it's similar to what coaches go through. If I'm not sleeping, eating or spending time with my family, I'm preparing for that Sunday's game. “And when I first work with a particular analyst, researching their career is definitely a big part of it,” Albert added. “With (Daryl Johnston) ‘Moose,’ for example, there are various anecdotes from his years with the Dallas Cowboys that pertain to our games. When I work local Knicks telecasts with Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier on MSG, a percentage of our viewers were avid fans of Clyde during the Knicks’ championship runs in 1970 and 1973, so we weave some of those stories into the broadcasts.” As the 2016 NFL season gets underway, Albert once again teams with longtime broadcast partner Johnston, with whom he has paired for 10 seasons, sideline reporter Laura Okmin and producer Barry Landis.

  • Rays Clips 5-8-10
RAYS CLIPS May 8, 2010 May 7, 2010 Tampa Bay Rays open series in Oakland by improving to 13-1 on road By Marc Topkin, Times Staff Writer Some lineup tweaks pay off as Tampa Bay keeps up its astonishing start. OAKLAND, Calif. - The decisions are made for various reasons, whether it be recent play, complex data and statistical matrixes, or even an occasional old-fashioned hunch. Friday, manager Joe Maddon said he kept Willy Aybar in the lineup because he looked good the night before and he likes his swings against left-handed pitchers. And he put Sean Rodriguez in the lineup, ahead of Ben Zobrist, based on research of Rodriguez's success against Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez in the minor leagues (4-for-5). And as good as the Rays are going, it only figures both ended up delivering key hits in the 4-1 victory that improved their baseball-best record to 22-7. "Pretty nice,'' Maddon said. David Price had something to do with it, too, sputtering a bit early but going on to pitch into the eighth in dominating style, allowing only three hits, to improve to 4-1. And when he left, after a career-high 119 pitches, with the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Choate took it from there. "David's the story,'' Maddon said. "We get that kind of starting pitching once again.'' Choate did his job twice, actually, as Evan Longoria's throwing error on the first ground ball Choate got from Daric Barton allowed a run to score. But Choate came back and got another, getting Ryan Sweeney to bounce out to shortstop Jason Bartlett.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM Extra Innings: Examining the Pace of Play Problem with America’s Pastime DAVID M. BAUER JR. SPRING 2021 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Journalism with honors in Journalism Reviewed and approved* by the following: John Affleck Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society Thesis Supervisor Russell Frank Associate Professor, Department of Journalism Honors Adviser * Electronic approvals are on file. i ABSTRACT This thesis examines the slowdown and changes in action regarding pace of play that has occurred in Major League Baseball over the past 100 years. It demonstrates the correlation between the problematic decline in baseball viewership and the pace of play slowdown and examines hypotheses for why this slowdown may be occurring, including advances in mid-game advertising and commercialization, a shift in focus toward offense, the advent of sabermetrics and other advanced stat-keeping implemented by teams to better their odds of victory, and changes in player behavior in the time between pitches. Ultimately, this thesis concludes that behavioral changes, brought on by both advanced analytics and monetary incentive, are the primary explanation for the lengthening of the average baseball game over time and the shift toward inaction-based plays. It also identifies possible solutions that Major League Baseball could implement to help solve its pace of play problem, including the implementation of a pitch clock, encouraging action-based plays like stolen bases, and, ultimately, amending the state of distrust between the league and the Players Association. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF FIGURES ...................................................................................................
