Battle of the Books 2005-2006
Battle of the Books 2010-2011 Guidelines Description: Battle of the Books (BOB) is an academic-based competition that has been very successful in school districts throughout the state in encouraging students to read a wide range of children’s literature. Students are asked to read a variety of books and recall information about the plots, characters, and settings. Students form teams of three and together complete the reading list. The titles on this list include classics and more current, award winning literature. The 2010/11 list includes 45 books that are available in both school and public libraries. Books on the list are at varying levels of difficulty, ranging from a fourth to an eighth grade reading level. While the activity is open to all fourth graders, Battle of the Books is a reading enrichment program designed to challenge our proficient and advanced readers. After completing the reading lists, students will compete against other teams of fourth graders by answering questions about the books. Every question asked in a battle is answered by the title and author of the book and takes the form of: "In which book..." The Stormonth competition will be held throughout the month of March, 2011. Through a series of "battles" we will arrive at one winning team for 4th grade. This team will represent our school at the Invitational Tournament which is made up of seventeen area schools. This year the Invitational Tournament will be held at Lake Bluff School in Shorewood on April 14, 2011. Sign-up: In September, during our regularly scheduled library classes, I will review the program once again with the students. -
Child Sex Trafficking Is an Underground Economy That Thrives Here, and Everywhere
Child sex trafficking is an underground economy that thrives here, and everywhere. How can we help those who have been ignored for so long? {Story by J. David McSwane / Photography and video by Dan Wagner} Wearing only a sports bra and boxers, bruises on her back, the girl surged through the salon’s door. Her feet were bare and bleeding from the race over asphalt, her speech a frenzied heave as she spilled the secret of where she had been, what she had been doing. Camille Johnson’s daughter confirmed the unthinkable. For weeks, Johnson had searched these north Sarasota streets, knocking on doors in the early morning, shouting in the rain, asking about her missing 17-year-old daughter, Wa-Das Crowle (WAH-Dez CROU-lee). Everyone calls her Moe. It was beyond frightening that Moe’s whereabouts and activities had been a mystery, for in this segregated tract of Sarasota, news both good and bad spreads fast and far through blood ties and marriage and church circles that connect nearly everyone by one degree. In this neighborhood, the gossip collides at Johnson’s meager salon. Johnson, a tall woman, now seems diminutive against the darkness she strains to remember. She points to the Japanese sword in the corner, between the plastic cupboard and the partition. She endeavors to explain why she clutched the sword, why she confronted her daughter’s abusers. Two of her adult children, listening, gather the grandchildren and walk out into the night. “One day,” Johnson says, “she called and said that she was OK, and I didn’t need to look for her. -

When Did British Wrestling Get So Big? Ben Carass
Cubed Circle Newsletter – Best of 2015 Issue With the 2015 Cubed Circle Yearbook and end of the year fast approaching, we have decided to put together a Cubed Circle Recap issue this week, encapsulating some of the best content the newsletter had to offer in 2015 ahead of our biggest issue of the year coming up in less than two weeks. This special issue will be released alongside the new, and hopefully improved, cubedcirclewrestling.com. The site has been made dramatically easier to navigate, and the content is far more organised, which should make for a better user experience. The site logo has also changed, as visitors of the website will quickly notice. As always, any feedback is very much appreciated, particularly as far as the new website is concerned, as, realistically speaking, we should have some growing pains, although the old-site, one could argue, was the manifestation of three or so years of growing pains. But, for now, we hope you enjoy this special issue, and we will be back with another issue in approximately ten days – what will be, if not the biggest, hopefully the best issue we have ever published. Merry Holidays and Happy New Year, everyone! – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor When Did British Wrestling Get So Big? Ben Carass On November 13th 2004, FWA (Frontier Wrestling Alliance) ran the biggest post-World of Sport era show the British Wrestling scene had ever seen. A reported 1,785 fans saw such names as Terry Funk, Drew McDonald, AJ Styles, Colt Cabana, Paul Burchill, Spud and Doug Williams on the card at the Coventry Skydome that night for British Uprising III. -
