  • The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises
ABSTRACT MENEFEE, WILLIAM CHADWICK. The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises. (Under the direction of Dr. Judy Peel). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of “retro” stadiums on professional baseball franchises. Retro stadiums, baseball-exclusive facilities modeled on classic architectural designs of the past, were built at an increasing rate beginning in 1992 with Baltimore’s Camden Yards. This study analyzed changes in franchises’ attendance, winning percentage, revenue and team value in the seasons following a team’s relocation to a retro stadium. Retro stadiums were found to positively increase attendance, revenue and team value for franchises at a higher rate than teams that did not build retro stadiums. An analysis of these variables and a discussion of the results for all individual franchises that constructed retro stadiums during the 1992-2004 period are presented in this study. Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, June 29, 2020 Braves.com Braves set player pool; 4 spots remain By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Less than three weeks after being drafted, Jared Shuster was placed in the 60-man player pool the Braves submitted to Major League Baseball on Sunday afternoon. Shuster is not expected to make his MLB debut this year. But his inclusion on this list creates the opportunity for him to spend the next couple of months working out with some of the top members of the Braves’ development staff. First and foremost, these 60-man player pools were designed for teams to designate which members of their organization will be eligible for the 60-game regular season, which is slated to begin on July 23 or 24. But with a Minor League season this year seeming unlikely, teams also chose to fill some of these spots with their top prospects. The Braves’ pool actually includes each of their top 12 prospects (per MLB Pipeline’s rankings). But only two or three of those prospects has a shot of being added to Atlanta’s active roster at some point this year. The members of this prospect group who could be used by Atlanta this year include outfielders Cristian Pache and Drew Waters, right-handers Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, Jasseel De La Cruz and Huascar Ynoa, and left-handers Kyle Muller and Tucker Davidson. Shuster, a left-handed pitcher taken in this year's Draft with the 25th overall pick out of Wake Forest, is part of the group of prospects added to this list just to get some experience this year.

While boosters frequently claim a large positive effect of such championships, a closer examination leads to the conclusion that the impact is likely much smaller than touted and may even be negative. Key Words: Mega-event, sports, sporting events, impact analysis JEL Classification Codes: L83 - Sports; Gambling; Recreation; Tourism; R53 - Public Facility Location Analysis; Public Investment and Capital Stock 1 INTRODUCTION Economics has frequently been used as a rationale in defense of public subsidies for professional sports. Subsidy advocates argue that new teams and/or stadiums provide an economic stimulus, and public support for professional sports should be construed as an investment rather than expenditure. This proposition is thought to be particularly true when the public subventions for sport produce championship teams. Two issues need to be analyzed in conjunction with this thesis. First, do greater subsidies translate into more frequent championships? Second, do sports championships correspond to higher levels of economic activity? The purpose of this report is to provide answers to these questions. A direct correlation between subsidies and championships has theoretical appeal.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent.
