Apollo 15 , launched in July , was the first of three missions capable of a longer stay on the moon. In the course of three days spent on the lunar surface, achievements included collecting hundreds of pounds of lunar samples and traveling more than 17 miles in the first piloted moon buggy. The Soviet Union had sent a remotely controlled rover to the moon , Lunokhod 1, in See a timeline of the space race and its modern-day version in private spaceflight. After the dramatic accomplishments of the s and s, the major space agencies turned their attention elsewhere for several decades. So far, only 12 humans—all Americans and all men—have set foot on the moon. The Clementine spacecraft mapped the moon's surface in wavelengths other than visible light, from ultraviolet to infrared. Hiding in the more than 1. The mission's end was spectacular: Prospector slammed into the moon, intending to create a plume that could be studied for evidence of water ice but none was observed. Since , the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has taken high-resolution maps of the lunar surface. Within the last two decades, lunar exploration has gone truly international—and even commercial. China launched its first lunar spacecraft the same year, and India followed suit in More milestones—both for better and worse—were achieved in In January, another Chinese lander, Yutu-2, made history by becoming the first rover to touch down on the lunar farside. And in April Israel aimed for the moon with the launch of its Beresheet spacecraft. Unfortunately, even though the spacecraft achieved lunar orbit, it crashed during its attempt to land. Unlike other spacecraft that came before it, Beresheet was built largely with private funding , heralding a new era of lunar exploration in which private companies are hoping to take the reins from governments. NASA, for one, is partnering with commercial spaceflight companies to develop both robotic and crewed landers for lunar exploration; among those companies are SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Astrobotic. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin have announced the goal of establishing a lunar base near the south pole where people could work and live. SpaceX is developing a spacecraft capable of ferrying astronauts to the moon and Mars , and is also developing a plan to bring tourists to lunar orbit. The future of spaceflight—from orbital vacations to humans on Mars. And not to be overshadowed by the commercial sector, NASA is planning its own ambitious return to the moon. A brief history of moon exploration In the s, the Cold War sparked a race to visit Earth's moon with flybys, robots, and crewed missions. Here's what we discovered—and what's next. By Nadia Drake and Jenny Howard. Moon What is the moon made of, and how did it form? See a map of all lunar landings. Kennedy committed the United States to landing a person on the moon before the decade was complete. The Apollo program , by far the most expensive spaceflight endeavor in history , kicked off that year, and by the time it ended in , nine missions and 24 astronauts had orbited or landed on the moon. Perhaps the most famous of those, Apollo 11 , marked the first time humans had stepped on another world. Exploring the legacy of Apollo 11 at the dawn of a new era of space travel. Each mission after Apollo 11 set new milestones in space travel and lunar exploration. Four months after the first humans reached the moon, Apollo 12 touched down, achieving a much more precise landing on the moon. Apollo 13 narrowly avoided a near-disaster when on-board oxygen tanks exploded in April , forcing the crew to abort a planned moon landing. All three survived. During the third lunar landing, in January , Apollo 14 , commander Alan Shepard set a new record for the farthest distance traveled on the moon: 9, feet. He even lobbed a few golf balls into a nearby crater with a makeshift 6-iron. Apollo 15 , launched in July , was the first of three missions capable of a longer stay on the moon. First Visit to Jupiter's Trojan Asteroids First Visit to Jupiter's Trojan Asteroids In October, NASA is set to launch the Lucy spacecraft. Over its 12-year primary mission, Lucy will visit eight different asteroids. One target lies in the asteroid belt. The other seven are so-called Trojan asteroids that share an orbit with Jupiter, trapped in points of stability 60 degrees ahead of or behind the planet as it goes around the sun. These objects have been trapped in their locations for billions of years, probably since the time of the formation of the solar system. They contain preserved samples of water-rich and carbon-rich material in the outer solar system; some of that material formed Jupiter, while other bits moved inward to contribute to Earth's life-sustaining composition. As a whimsical aside: When meteorites strike carbon-rich asteroids, they create tiny carbon crystals.

Both India and China are moving ahead in space exploration. Both countries launched space missions in 2013. India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) was sent to Mars in November. China's Chang'e 3 spaceship blasted off on its way to the moon in December. India India launched its first spacecraft bound for Mars on November 5, 2013. The craft spent almost a month in Earth's orbit. Then, on November 30, 2013, the orbiter went on its way to the Red Planet. "The Earth orbiting phase of the spacecraft ended. The spacecraft is now on a course to reach Mars after a journey of about 10 months around the sun," the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in early December. The 3,000-pound (1,350-kilogram) orbiter is called Mangalyaan. That means "Mars craft" in Hindi. It must travel 485 million miles (780 million Photo credit and all related images: kilometers) to reach an orbit around Mars. It will take about 300 days. It is Arun Sankar K/AP expected to do this by September 2014. This is the Satish Dhawan Space Center in southern India. India sent its first spaceship to Mars in The orbiter will gather images and data. They will help in determining how November 2013. Martian weather systems work. India is also looking to MOM to figure out what happened to the large quantities of water that are believed to have once existed on Mars.

09 September 2019 The Hindu Editorials Update lqcg% 8 cts # Mahendra's YouTube Channel . The Sentinelese, a negrito tribe that lives on the North Sentinel Island of the Andamans, remains hostile to outsiders. Based on carbon dating by the Anthropological Survey of India, Sentinelese presence was confirmed in the islands to 2,000 years ago. The Govt. of India issued the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Regulation, 1956 to declare the traditional areas occupied by the tribes as reserves, and prohibited entry of all persons except those with authorisation. Photographing or filming the tribe members is also an offence. The rules were amended later to enhance penalties. But restricted area permits were relaxed for some islands . Almost nine months after American national John Allen Chau was recently. allegedly killed by the Sentinelese on the North Sentinel Island of Andaman and Nicobar islands, a recent publication by the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) throws more light on the incident and also the ways of one of the most isolated tribes in the world. Titled The Sentinelese of the North Sentinel Island: A reprisal of Tribal Scenario in an Andaman Island in context of Killing of an American Preacher. “On November 14, Chau left Port Blair and reached the island at night. He spent the entire day of November 15 with the Sentinelese and on the night when he met the fishermen who had transported him to the island, he gave them the dairy in which he had recorded his experience of the day,” the director said. The orbiter is safe in the intended orbit around the moon.

  • Beresheet 2: Israel
Beresheet 2: Israel drishtiias.com/printpdf/beresheet-2-israel Why in News Recently, Israel launched the Beresheet 2 project aimed at landing an unmanned craft on the moon in 2024. Earlier, Israel’s Beresheet probe crash landed on the Moon. Key Points Background: The Beresheet probe was a private mission to the Moon by Israeli non-profit SpaceIL organisation. Beresheet in hebrew (spoken in Israel) means Genesis. It was successfully launched in February 2019, on board a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral (USA) and arrived in lunar orbit in April 2019. It suffered an engine failure as it prepared to land and crashed abruptly on the surface of the moon. 1/2 Beresheet 2: Objective: Conducting experiments and collecting data on behalf of school students. Structure: It will involve launching two landing craft and an orbiter that would circle the moon for years. Cost: It will cost around 100 million dollars raised from international partnerships and donors. Significance: Israel could become the fourth nation to land a spacecraft on the moon after the USA, the former Soviet Union and China. Other Missions to Moon: India has planned a new moon mission named Chandrayaan-3. It is likely to be launched in early 2021. It will be a mission repeat of Chandrayaan-2 and will include a Lander and Rover similar to that of Chandrayaan-2, but will not have an orbiter. Chandrayaan-2 failed which crushed India's dream to become the first nation to successfully touch down on the lunar surface in its maiden attempt. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has decided to send an unmanned spacecraft to the moon in 2024.

This investigation is the first attempt to explore the lunar subsurface structure by using ground penetrating radar with high resolution. We have probed the subsur- face to a depth of several hundred meters using LPR. In-orbit testing, data processing and the preliminary results are presented. These observations have revealed the con- figuration of regolith where the thickness of regolith varies from about 4m to 6m. In addition, one layer of lunar rock, which is about 330m deep and might have been accumulated during the depositional hiatus of mare basalts, was detected.
