Abstract Composer Leslie Uyeda and poet Lorna Crozier inspire, create, and collaborate in real time. Uyeda and Crozier have an exceptional creative collaboration as they have collaborated on 9 song cycles in the past 12 years and the subject matter of much of their art can be seen as cultural reflections and critiques. This is evident in the song cycle The First Woman which speaks of the silencing of women’s voices through the tales of Lilith and Eve in the garden of Eden and the rape of Dinah, Jacob’s daughter. To successfully collaborate on 9 song cycles is a feat in itself, but to also create art that embraces challenging emotions and topics concerning current gender issues is remarkable. Through a singular case study analysis consisting of in-depth interviews and musical score analysis, this monograph aims to not only provide a performance guide to two Uyeda and Crozier creations, White Cat Blues and The First Woman, but to also uncover what makes their creative collaboration process so unique and effective. Within the performance guide, the poetry is examined discovering theme, tone, structure, language devices, and imagery. The music is analyzed focusing on structure, style, basic har- mony, and the relationship between the text and music, highlighting specific areas of word painting. The performance guide concludes with an examination of the vocal technical chal- lenges presented to the singer, with possible solutions. Accompanying the performance guide are recordings of four Uyeda and Crozier art song collaborations. To date, the researcher has not identified any contemporary research studies of creative collaboration in solo Canadian vocal work. The information about Uyeda and Crozier in com- bination with the performance guide to White Cat Blues and The First Woman serve as a great resource for teachers, singers, and pianists. This monograph looks at the collaboration between a poet and composer who are work- ing together now. Composer Leslie Uyeda and poet Lorna Crozier inspire, collaborate and cre- ate together in real time. This research uncovers what makes their creative collaboration special and provides a performance guide to two of their works for singer and piano: White Cat Blues and The First Woman. Within the performance guide, the poetry is analyzed discovering theme, tone, structure, and language devices. The music is analyzed focusing on structure, style, basic harmony, and the relationship between the words and the music. The performance guide con- cludes with suggestions for the singer to navigate the challenging technical requirements of the songs. The performance guide will serve as a great resource for teachers, singers, and pianists. Uyeda and Crozier’s art is worthy of research because they have not only created 9 song cycles, but their art also discusses current socially debated issues including gender. For art to shed light on the abuse of women and to challenge the listener to ponder these issues is truly remarkable. It is hoped this research will promote the work of Leslie Uyeda and Lorna Crozier and continue the necessary dialogue in support of a world where women’s voices are heard and not silenced. ii Acknowledgments I would like to extend my sincere thanks to many people for the support I received during this research. OLSON 2013-7 Lorna Crozier 2 / 17 Biographical Sketch: Lorna Crozier was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1948. She graduated from W.A. Beatty Collegiate in Swift Current in 1966, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 and a professional teaching certificate from the University of Saskatchewan. She received a Master of Arts degree in 1980 from the University of Alberta. In addition to her university education Crozier attended creative writing courses at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts at Fort San from 1974 to 1977. Crozier taught high school English in rural Saskatchewan from 1970 to 1973, in Swift Current from 1973 to 1978, at the University of Alberta from 1978 to1979, and at the University of Saskatchewan from 1986 to 1991. Since 1991, she has been an associate professor in the Department of Writing at the University of Victoria, quickly becoming Associate, full Professor and then a Distinguished Professor. Crozier has also served as the Chair of the Department of Writing for six years. Crozier has been writer-in-residence at the University of Toronto (1988, 1989 to 1990), Douglas College, British Columbia (1989), the University of Lethbridge (1987), and the Regina Public Library (1984 to 1985), her writing has been included in dozens of journals, magazines and anthologies, she has published numerous books of poetry, and has given many readings and lectures all over Canada and the United States, as well as England, the former Yugoslavia, France and Chile.

She attended the University of Regina, as well as the University of Saskatchewan and Alberta, where she received an M.A. in 1980. After spending several years teaching high school English, Crozier had established herself as a poet well enough to quit her job and devote herself full time to poetry. Over the years she has published numerous books of poetry, edited an anthology of Saskatchewan poetry, published poems in over eleven anthologies, and has had literally dozens and dozens of her poems published in such journals as Border Crossings, Poetry Canada Review, Fireweed, NeWest Review, Descant, Canadian Literature, Grain and so on. Currently, she lives in Victoria with her husband, poet Patrick Lane, and teaches in the Creative Writing Department of the University of Victoria. This is the third collection of papers from Crozier. They are from two very different periods of time in Crozier's life and career. The first set is from her early period of education and writing, from 1971 to 1979. We get a sense of Crozier's interests and the possible influences of her post-secondary education on her early attitudes. We also see the passing of a seminal period in Crozier's life, when she went from teaching high school to begin her life's work writing poetry, and when she met and joined up with Patrick Lane.
