Diskin Auditorium REGULAR PUBLIC MEETING MINUTES May 10, 2021 7:00 PM DISTRICT GOALS Goal 1 1A: Develop and implement STEAM Initiatives 1B: Continue to integrate Technology into virtual and in-person education settings 1C: Increase Advanced Placement (AP) offerings and enrollment within AP courses 1D: Continue to review Special Education Student Performance 1E: Develop and implement Career and Technical Education Pathways in Middlesex High School 1F: Develop, for implementation, a partnership with a local College(s) and/or Universities for the purpose of creating a dual degree partnership to provide opportunities for students to graduate with a high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree 1G: Continue to develop, revise and realign our K-12 Curricula Framework through an Equity and Inclusivity lens, in accordance with our Five Year Review Cycle 1H: Actively investigate, secure and implement better ways to service our LEP (Limited English Proficiency) Population 1I: Assess learning Gaps via District-Wide Assessments Goal 2 Define implement, and if needed, realign methods of effective and frequent communication with families that lead towards positive and sustained engagement within our schools and community. BOARD GOAL Continue to create a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility among staff and students with families and communities. The Middlesex Board of Education and District Administration remind all participants that we are all working together in the best interest of each and every child attending the Middlesex Borough Public Schools. The Mission of our school district is to engage in a partnership with our community to provide the knowledge and skills for all students to achieve academically and to develop confidence in their ability to work through challenges, to be compassionate and respectful of themselves and others, and to be committed to overall excellence in a diverse world. All attendees are reminded that any verbal, written, or physical conduct that is demeaning or inflammatory toward any other while engaged in a school activity will not be tolerated. Each person is requested to take personal responsibility for conducting him/herself respectfully during all school functions. I. CALL TO ORDER TIME: 6:02 PM A. The New Jersey Open Public Meetings Law was enacted to ensure the right of the public to have advance notice of and to attend the meeting of the public bodies at which any business affecting their interests is discussed and acted upon. EXECUTIVE SESSION Time: 6:04 PM_______ Approve an Executive Session pursuant to Chapter 231, PL 1975, also known as the Open Public Meetings Act, authorizing a public body to meet in executive private session under certain limited circumstances, and said law requires the Board adopt a resolution at a public meeting before it can meet in such an executive or private session. The Middlesex Board of Education hereby determines that it may be necessary to meet in Executive Session on May 10, 2021 to discuss matter/s involving: 1. Personnel Matters 2. Diskin Auditorium REGULAR PUBLIC MEETING MINUTES May 10, 2021 7:00 PM II. PRESENTATIONS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. Presentations Mauger Grades 6-8, Dr. Remi Christofferson, Principal Dr. Christofferson stated that under the direction of Brian Lynch (Director), Nicole Nicholas (Choreographer) and Karen Blumenthal (Music Director), the Mauger Drama is proud to present The Mystery of Custodia, an online mystery play. When the school’s mysterious janitor and beloved lunch lady both vanish, and the drama teacher is reassigned, the drama club decides to work to solve this mystery before their spring musical has to be directed by the football coach! This special preview segment includes Emily Pena as Carrie, Natalia Saavedra Lopez as Foster, Jared DeSagun Pineda as Techie, and Stephanie Sentenat as Lane. The video was edited by Vincent Pileggi. The Mystery of Custodia will make its full premiere in early June. Stay tuned to the Mauger website for more details!” May is Better Speech and Better Hearing Month, TaNia Taylor, Director of Special Services Special Services Director, Ms. Taylor, introduced the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) team, which included Kathleen Hall Rankin, Robyn Black, Rachel Singer, Amy Kurzawa, and Jenna Kaplan. Each presented facts about their work utilizing a power point presentation. B. Announcements Board of Education President, Mrs. Giardina had no report. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Williams discussed a new product that will be used in the schools for long term sanitation and a memo will be issued shortly. This process will assist in getting the schools open five days/week with the first full day in-person Friday to be June 4, 2021. Also the 2020-2021 school calendar has been updated and June 8, 2021 is the Gubernatorial election. Business Administrator, Ms. Brooks stated that any board trainings with a cost must be board approved in advance. Student Representative, Ms. Habeba Rashwan stated that schools continue with hybrid learning and spring sports, and that there will be no finals at the High School. A/P exams have started and there is a choice of paper or digital. Tickets for the High School Prom are on sale. May 17, 2021 is the District Arts Festival. June 18, 2021 is graduation and May is mental health awareness month. Liaison Reports: o Borough Mayor/Council Liaison, Michael McGinley reported that the next meeting is tomorrow night. ________________________________________________3 _______________________________________ Middlesex Public Schools – MHS Peter J. Diskin Auditorium REGULAR PUBLIC MEETING MINUTES May 10, 2021 7:00 PM o Borough Alliance Committee, William Coyle reported that the next meeting is on May 12, 2021 at the American Legion. Mauger moving up ceremony is June 18, 2021 at 11:00AM. o Middlesex Community School Liaison, Kelly Giardina reported that applications are now being accepted for the summer community program. o Middlesex County SBA Delegate, Sharon Schueler reported that the next meeting is tomorrow, May 11, 2021, and that on Saturday May 8, 2021 there was a one-hour DOE presentation on the road back and the road forward. o NJSBA Legislative Officer, Sharon Schueler reported that the state legislature has concern with adding unfunded mandates using federal funds. o NJSBA Delegate, Dr. John Hrevnack reported that the Delegate met on April 15, 2021 virtually. Several resolutions were presented and there was a revision to policy language to raise awareness for school climate. o Veolia Middlesex Community Advisory Panel, Kelly Giardina/Jeanette DeJesus had no report.
