Hood National Forest 1 – Appeal of Developed Recreation Site Concessionaire Permit Decision Appellant’s Interests: Bark has a specific interest in this decision, which would transfer management of public campgrounds to private companies. We have expressed our interest in this specific project, providing scoping comments, participating in open houses, and submitting PA comments. Bark is a non-profit organization based in Portland, Oregon and has worked to protect the MHNF since 1999. Staff, members, volunteers, supporters, and board members of Bark live in the communities surrounding the MHNF and use and enjoy the Forest extensively for recreation, drinking water, hunting, fishing, general aesthetic enjoyment, family gatherings, viewing flora and fauna, gathering forest products, and other purposes.

    The Economic, Environmental, and Social Benefits of Geothermal Use in Oregon Andrew Chiasson Geo‐Heat Center Oregon Institute of Technology October 2011 Oregon has a long and rich history of utilization of its geothermal resources. Today, the documented direct uses of geothermal waters are related to space and district heating, snow‐ melting, spas and resorts, aquaculture, greenhouses, and agribusiness. The Geo‐Heat Center estimates that there are over 600 direct use applications in Oregon, not including undeveloped hot springs. Boyd (2007) and Sifford (2010) provide excellent summaries of geothermal energy uses in Oregon, some of which are no longer operational, and others that have expanded their use. Multicomponent geothermometry techniques were applied to new and historic water chemistry data in the north-central Oregon Western Cascades and the lower Wind River Valley in southern Washington in order to recalculate reservoir temperatures. Revised reservoir temperatures, water chemistry, and isotope data were used to determine relationships between hot springs in the north-central Oregon Cascades.

    OldSmokeys Newsletter — WinterOldSmokeys 2014 Page 1 Newsletter Newsletter of the Pacific Northwest Forest Service Retirees—Winter 2014 President’s Message—Linda Goodman Now that we have had all the cookies we can eat (at least for a few weeks) and have caught up with friends and families, it is time to put the Christmas decorations away. While you are doing that, I hope you will take a mo- ment to look back over the past year and think about what was your favorite time during the year. Visiting with family, having a great vacation in an exotic location, or maybe just holding your grandchild? Whatever it was, I hope you stop to savor that moment and enjoy it all over again in your mind. For us, we got a new puppy a little while ago and there have been many moments when I have wondered what we were thinking, but there have also been moments of great fun. The wonder in his eyes when he sees a leaf falling (and he wants to chase it with me attached to his leash!) or the first time he saw raindrops in a puddle, to name a few. I wish for all of you time to reflect on and savor happy moments from the past year! Now, for the business side of things, I hope all of you take time to vote for OldSmokey Jim Rice as President- elect. I have known Jim for many years when he was on the Mt. Hood National Forest and have always appre- ciated his ability to get the job done! He is a straight-up guy who brings a variety of experiences.
