Her professional career began in the public education system where she led the creation and implementation of two internationally renowned educational programs: a high-tech international business program and a regional performing arts school. In 1998 she founded Youth in Motion, where she served as President and CEO for 14 years. During this time, she built an organization renowned for its design and delivery of diverse local and national programs for youth including Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 awards and mentoring program. Akela has also led her own consulting practice and authored three books on mentoring. Akela has a M.Ed. from the University of Toronto (OISE), a B.Ed., her principal’s qualifications, and an Honours B.A. from the University of Western Ontario. Health, Development & Adult Education, Room 12-199 Liam O’Leary, Moderator, MEd student, Adult Education • Dr. Ivan Silver, MD, MEd, FRCPC, Vice President Education, Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) Dr. Ivan Silver is a full professor in the Department of Psychiatry at U of T and he is the inaugural Vice President, Education at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health. Drawing from his experience at the University, Dr. Silver is responsible for envisioning and creating a teaching and learning culture at CAMH that will draw students and trainees to the hospitoal and support the teaching and learning experience of everyone who works there. Formerly the Vice-Dean of Continuing Education and Professional Development in the Faculty of Medicine at U of T, Dr. Silver has also served as an Educational consultant with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital and was the inaugural Direc- tor of the Faculty of Medicine’s renowned Centre for Faculty Development. Dr. Silver is a nationally and internationally respected scholar in the areas of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty Development and Interprofessional Education and Collaboration. He has built a national reputation as a skilled clinician, an esteemed teacher and educator, and a creative facilitator. Dr. Ivan Silver has been awarded the prestigious President’s Teaching Award (2012) from the University of Toronto. The award recognizes Dr. Silver for sustained excellence in teaching, research in teaching, and the integration of teaching and research. • Dr. Joyce Nyhof-Young, MSc, PhD, Associate Professor, Family and Community Medicine, and Curriculum Evaulation Coordinator, Undergraduate Medical Educa- tion Program, Faculty of Medicine, U of T. Toronto General Hospital Dr. Nyhof-Young is a social scientist with a Ph.D. in Curriculum Teaching and Learning from OISE. Dr. Nyhof-Young was a research scientist at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and faculty member in the Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Toronto. Her research with PMH focuses on program development and evaluation in cancer patient education and survivorship, and in health professional education. As well as her posi- tions as Associate Professor, Family and Community Medicine and Curriculum Evaluation Coordinator, she is the Research Lead at the Wightman Berris Academy for the second year Determinants of Community Health (DOCH2) course for undergraduate medical students. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Fashion, Ryerson University. Dr. Nyhof-Young is cross appointed to the Institute of Medical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Theory and Policy Studies at OISE/UT. • Kimberly Gibbons, MEd, Executive Director, Ontario Council for International Cooperation In her role as Executive Director, Kimberly Gibbons has led the Ontario Council for In- ternational Cooperation through a period of expansion and growth in its sector-repre- sentation, networking, capacity building and public engagement roles. Kimberly has experience working in formal and non-formal education settings with youth and adults of diverse backgrounds. She counts as formative experiences her involvement in devel- opment education as a local committee and overseas volunteer in Guelph and Costa Rica with Canadian Crossroads International; field research and work with street children in India; teaching ESL and global issues to children and adults in rural Japan; supporting gender and human rights profiles within the Commonwealth Secretariat; and coordinat- ing culture and education programmes for the Consulate General of Japan in Toronto. Kimberly holds a Masters of Education in Adult Education and Transformative Learning from OISE. • Sahil Dhingra, LLB, Leadership Development Speaker, The Potentialists Sahil Dhingra is a Law Graduate from the University of British Columbia, and has recently left the law behind to pursue his dream of being a Leadership Development Speaker and Wellness Coach. Sahil is a connector and community builder at heart, and is passionate about developing people who are fulfilled and balanced, collaborate to support one another, and create meaningful contributions to the world around them. • Sarah Irwin, MEd, MBA, Managing Director, Independent Learning Centre, TVO Sarah is the Managing Director of the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), the Prov- ince of Ontario’s designated provider of distance education utilizing technology and new media to deliver online learning to adults and those who cannot be served by the traditional system. ILC is mandated by the Ministry of Education to provide a high school education, at a distance, in English and French. Under Sarah’s leadership the ILC won the 2007 CNMA award for Excellence in Learning and two Interactive Media Awards. Sarah sits on the Canadian Heritage Virtual Museum Editorial Board and is a member of the UNESCO International Adult Learners’ Week com- mittee. Prior to her appointment with the ILC, Sarah was TVO’s Director of E-Learning, setting up and running the $10 million e-learning initiative known as the Lifelong Learning Challenge Fund. This resulted in the creation of eight sets of online courses amounting to over 1440 hours of courseware in partnership with eight colleges, universities and institu- tions. Sarah joined TVO after spending 15 years at the CBC in various capacities ranging from production, business affairs and acquisitions, with her final role as Manager, Market- ing and Sales, CBC International Sales. She holds a BA from York University; an MBA com- pleted online through Athabasca University, and an MEd from OISE/University of Toronto. Higher Education, Communications & Design, Room 11-164 Sabrina Persaud, Moderator, MEd student, Educational Administration • Dr. Pamela Gravestock, MA, PhD, Associate Director, Centre for Teaching Support and Innovations, U of T • Dr. Pamela Gravestock works with faculty, departments and divisions on teaching- related issues including: developing learning outcomes, evaluating teaching (through dossiers, mid-course feedback, course evaluations, and on-site observations), and en- couraging academic integrity. Dr. Gravestock also teaches a course on the University in Canada in the Canadian Studies Program at U of T. She holds MAs in Art History and History and a doctorate in Higher Education at OISE. • Mary Catharine Lennon, MA, Senior Research Analyst, Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario Mary Catharine Lennon has been involved in higher education policy development, advice and research in institutional, provincial, inter-provincial and international agen- cies. The majority of her work is in international and comparative policy issues of system design, accountability, quality assurance and governance. She is currently a PhD Candi- date in Higher Education at OISE/University of Toronto. • Graeme Stewart, MA, MSc, Communications Manager, Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Graeme Stewart is a public policy professional with a focus in higher education and specialties in public communications, government relations and digital media. He has worked in all areas of the higher education sector, including government, advocacy, and research. He is a PhD student in Higher Education at OISE. • Bernie Murray, MEd, Associate Professor, School of Fashion, Ryerson University Bernie Murray teaches courses in Fashion Design, Research Methods, and Computer Aided Design. Her research agenda includes creativity, critique, and studio-based peda- gogy. She has worked in the Canadian apparel industry for over 20 years in design, man- ufacturing and consulting for apparel companies. She holds a BEd and MEd from Brock University and is a 4th year PhD student in Curriculum, Teaching & Learning at OISE. • Dr. Ben Barry, MA, PhD, Assistant Professor, Equity, Inclusivity & Diversity, Faculty of Communication & Design, Ryerson University Dr. Ben Barry’s research explores cross-cultural consumer attitudes towards fashion com- munications
