Our speciality is our night tour to see North Island Brown Kiwi with a very high success rate. Birders Rest & Kiwi tours Photo Gallery Kiwi are notoriously difficult to see but although they are traditionally native forest birds, some local sites are in open fields & paddocks with scattered patches of bush & in such habitat, sightings are more reliable. Although not guaranteed, we now manage to see at least one Kiwi on nearly all our visits. Other interesting native birds in our area include Fernbird, Tomtit, New Zealand Dotterel, Wrybill, Royal Spoonbill, New Zealand Dabchick, Australian Little Grebe & Australasian Bittern. Fernbirds are widespread in New Zealand but hard to see; a riverside swamp near us has a high population of them & they can usually be called into view. New Zealand Dotterels and Wrybills are locally common on Far North beaches, some of the many dune lakes north of here have both New Zealand Dabchicks and Australian Little Grebes. There are still patches of native forest where Tomtits, North Island Robin and occasionally Kokako can be seen. Visitors driving to Kerikeri can incorporate a detour to Waipu to look for the rare Fairy Tern & to Teal Bay, a reliable site for wild Brown Teal. Since 2010 we have run day pelagic tours from Whangaroa Harbour, half an hour’s drive from here. In 3 or 4 trips a year since then we have recorded 28 tubenose species including 5 species of albatross, Black-winged, White-naped, Pycroft’s & Kermadec Petrels, Wedge-tailed Shearwater and regular New Zealand Storm Petrel; also Grey Ternlet & South Polar Skua. Detlef has published an illustrated site guide to the Far North region which is available through us or from retail outlets in New Zealand, Australia & the UK. We have 2 self-contained units attached to the house, these have en-suite bathrooms & kitchenette, one has a queen-size bed & the other 2 single beds. There is also a spare en-suite room in the main house. Our price includes a ‘continental’ style breakfast. There is access to the deck & garden (for which the bird list is 42) & a swimming pool. There are a number of other activities available for visitors to the Bay of Islands such as sailing, kayaking, fishing, scuba diving & tramping. The triumphs, challenges and failures of young North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli): a study of behaviour, growth, dispersal and mortality Stephanie Walden A thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Alexandra Louise Wilson 2013 i ii Abstract North Island brown kiwi (NIBK, Apteryx mantelli), an endemic New Zealand species, are estimated to have declined by 90% from pre-human colonisation numbers. Currently, at least 60% of mortality is attributed to introduced mammalian predators, namely stoats (Mustela erminea) preying on chicks. Therefore, conservation effort focuses on predator trapping/killing, and hatching and rearing NIBK chicks in captivity and releasing them back into the wild. These efforts are resulting in increased recruitment of chicks into populations. However, little is known about the biology and behaviour of NIBK chicks in the wild and how this may affect management of these populations. Consequently, the aim of this study was to examine the ecology of young wild NIBK in a natural high density population with reduced predator diversity on Ponui Island. More specifically, the goal was to determine their growth rates, behaviour around the natal nest, dispersal and mortality, and how these factors may be influenced by environmental variables. During the 2010 - 2011 and 2011 - 2012 breeding seasons 29 young NIBK were observed from hatching until mortality or the end of 2012.

New Zealand birds have some of the best names.... For instance, this is the Pipipi, a small songbird endemic to New Zealand. Participant David Woods captured this shot of a curious individual. New Zealand is a country that is like no other. It is “at the end of the world” in some respects, having been isolated for millions of years from the rest of the world. Its flora show its link to other southern land masses with such native species as Podocarp conifers, Nothofagus beeches, and fuchsias, all shared with Australia and Patagonia, harkening back to the time of Gondwanaland. The native fauna was all but exclusively made up of birds, but thanks to the arrival of humans (particularly Europeans), what is present today is but a shadow of what once was. Nevertheless, we still can see an impressive variety of birds, including six endemic families, and a whole host of native species. Happily, New Zealanders seem to have taken their unique avifauna to heart, and have made great strives to remove the exotic mammalian predators that have been responsible for the extinction or rarity of so many species. As a result, native bird voices once again fill the beech and podocarp forests, and the predator-free offshore islands are havens for communities of native species. Out tour took us from the southern end of the South Island to Stewart Island, and back north again, crossing Foveaux Strait, along the length of the South Island (and both sides!) to the Cook Strait, and then north across the North Island to Auckland.

Despite this, surprisingly little research has been undertaken in this field in respect to one of New Zealand’s most iconic endangered species, the brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli). This thesis aims to produce the most comprehensive report to date of brown kiwi spatial behaviour, investigating the habitat utilisation of brown kiwi adults within a high-density population while they are active at night and when roosting during the day. Additionally, the study examines how habitat utilisation varies, and explores the likely drivers of brown kiwi spatial behaviour including food availability, social/reproductive cues, population demographics and environmental variables. Forty seven radio-tagged brown kiwi adults were tracked across a 1.2km2 study site on Ponui Island from March 2013 to February 2014.

Interest in ratites has necessitated a review of available information on the unique endangered kiwi (Apteryx spp.). Five different species of kiwis, endemic to the three islands of New Zealand, are recognized by the Department of Conservation, New Zealand, according to genetic and biological differences: the North Island Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli), Okarito Brown Kiwi/Rowi (A. rowi), Tokoeka (A. australis), Great Spotted Kiwi/Roroa (A. haastii), and Little Spotted Kiwi (A owenii). As predators were found to be the main reason for declining kiwi numbers, predator control is a main objective of management techniques to prevent kiwis becoming extinct in New Zealand. Further considerations include captive breeding and release, and establishment of kiwi sanctuaries. Body size and bill measurements are different between species and genders within species. Kiwis have the lowest basal rates of metabolism compared with all avian standards. A relative low body temperature (38 ºC), burrowing, a highly developed sense of smell, paired ovaries in females, and a low growth rate, separate kiwis from other avian species. Kiwis have long-term partnerships. Females lay an egg that is approximately 400 % above the allometrically expected value, with an incubation period of 75–85 days. Kiwis mainly feed on soil invertebrate, with the main constituent being earthworms, and are prone to parasites and diseases found in other avian species.

  • Kiwi (Apteryx Spp.) Recovery Plan
    Recovery plans A recovery group has been established for kiwi. This group consists of people with knowledge of the ecology and management needs of the species. The role of the recovery group is to achieve recovery of the species they represent through generation and provision of high-quality technical advice. The recovery group prepared this plan in conjunction with people interested in or affected by this plan, or with an expert knowledge of the species. Drafts have been sent to relevant Conservation Boards for comment and to people or organisations with an interest in conservation management of kiwi. Changes to the plan were made as a result of that consultation. The recovery group will review progress in implementation of this plan and will recommend to Department of Conservation managers any changes that may be required in management. Comments and suggestions regarding conservation of kiwi are welcome and should be directed to the Kiwi Recovery Group via any office of the Department or to the Manager, Biodiversity Recovery Unit, PO Box 10-420, Wellington. The recovery planning process provides opportunities for further consultation between the Department, tangata whenua and others regarding management of this species. Those interested in being more involved in management of kiwi or in receiving information should also contact the recovery group. The Central Regional General Manager of the Department formally approved this plan in 2003. A review of the plan is due in 2006, or sooner if new information or technology leads to a significant change in management direction. This plan will remain operative until a new plan has been prepared and approved, or become redundant if recovery is achieved and management effort enters a ‘maintenance phase’.

POWLESLAND 99 Science Directorate, Department of Conservation, PO Box 10420, Wellington, New Zealand DIET OF THE STEWART ISLAND BROWN KIWI (APTERYX AUSTRALIS LAWRYI) AT SCOLLAY'S FLAT, SOUTHERN STEWART ISLAND Summary: The diet of the Stewart Island brown kiwi at Scollay's Hat, southern Stewart Island was determined by analysis of 146 faeces collected during 11 field-trips from September 1982 to October 1984. A variety of invertebrates and a small quantity of plant matter were represented in the faeces. The four invertebrate groups excluding Annelida, that contributed most soft tissue dry matter to the sample were Lepidoptera (36%), Coleoptera (21%), Arachnida (19%) and Hemiptera (10%). Circumstantial evidence suggests that the habit of the Stewart Island brown kiwi of foraging by day is partly a response to low invertebrate biomass in the island's nutrient-poor soils. POWLESLAND 606 Manaroa Road, RD 2, Picton 7282, New Zealand Abstract Translocations (deliberate movement and release of wildlife) have been of crucial importance in the management of New Zealand threatened birds, and as part of site restoration projects. We review attempts to translocate New Zealand birds for conservation reasons since 1863. Following an early pulse from 1895-1908, there was concerted and increasing effort (both in the number of translocations and the number of taxa translocated) and success since the early 1960s. Sixty- eight taxa (55 species) of New Zealand birds have been translocated in over 1100 separate releases, with new populations of 50 taxa (41 species) successfully established. Translocations of 9 further taxa (7 further species) are in progress. Overall, 61% of New Zealand’s extant endemic waterfowl, shorebird and landbird taxa have been translocated (51% of the total successfully, with an additional 4% in progress). Five taxa exist solely as translocated populations (little spotted kiwi Apteryx owenii, buff weka Gallirallus australis hectori, kakapo Strigops habroptilus, South Island saddleback Philesturnus carunculatus and black robin Petroica traversi), and 10 further taxa would be confined to single wild populations but for successful translocations. Most translocations were undertaken within historical ranges, however, 6 taxa have been established beyond their historical ranges, with attempts for 2 further taxa in progress.
