How- ever, this relictual forest area lies inside a tea plantation and is mostly lacking conservation protec- tion. Species inventories of remaining rainforest patches are currently incomplete, and information about the behavior and ecology of the herpetofauna of Morningside is poorly known. In our survey, we identified 13 amphibian species and recorded an additional two species that could not be identi- fied with existing keys. We determined 11 reptile species from this patch of forest, and another un- identifiedCnemaspis gecko was recorded. We did not assess the herpetofauna outside of this forest patch. Some species are described for the first time in Morningside, suggesting a wider distribution in Sri Lanka. We also document a call from a male Pseudophilautus cavirostris for the first time. MAKSUDUL ALAM, M.A. BASHAR AND HUMAYUN REZA KHAN Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka‐1000, Bangladesh Key words: Biology, Common rose butterfly, Feeding potential, Instar, Incubation Abstract To study the biology of Pachliopta aristolochiae on its host plant Aristolochia indica singly laid eggs on the host plant were collected from the field and reared in the laboratory under optimum conditions of temperature (28 ± 3 °C) and relative humidity (70 ± 5% RH). Incubation period of the egg was 5.0 ± 0.6 days, larval developmental period was 11 ± 0.3 days, pre‐pupal period was 0.87 ± 0.08 day, and the pupation took 12 ± 0.63 days. The length of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larvae were 4.0 ± 0.63, 9 ± 0.63, 22.6 ± 5.2 and 38.2 ± 4.70 mm, respectively. The feeding potential rate of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larvae were 11.4 ± 5.04, 29.6 ± 5.12, 51.4 ± 6.0 and 72.8 ± 4.9%, respectively. The weight of the faeces of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larvae were 0.012 ± 0.004, 0.047 ± 0.018, 0.0114 ± 0.023 and 0.274 ± 0.045 gm, respectively. Introduction All butterflies are herbivores in their larval stages, majority of them are host specific and have close relationship with their host plants(1). The common rose butterfly, Pachliopta aristolochiae (Lepidoptera:Papilionidae) is a swallow tail butterfly.

The history of Sri Lanka during the period of about three and a half centuries between the abandonment of Polonnaruva and the Portuguese conquest of the maritime provinces comprising chiefly the territories incorporated within the kingdoms of Kotte and }affna presents features which are in many ways different from those of the preceding periods. Although this period of the island's history has suffered relatively by neglect and has been represented as one of decline generally by historians influenced by Classical romanticist thinking it has a greater relevance for the understanding of the institutions and problems of modern and even contemporary Sri Lankan history. Since their cultivations totally depend on irrigation water every possible effort should be put in order to optimize the water usage to achieve increased crop production. Recent reports on water management activities of several irrigation schemes in the Dry Zone indicates, that the water distribution is not meeting the demands of farmers in terms of adequacy, reliability and timelines. Further it was said that there is considerable potential to increase paddy field in this system through improved irrigation water management, especially by efficient irrigation scheduling. The study intends to find out the annual statement of reservoir replenishment and behaviour is monthly analysed about reservoirs condition by Irrigation Department and recorded below data to statements for the water – year ending the month by month in orderly. It includes rainfall on catchment, area irrigated, water area, yield from catchment, issues from sluices, discharge over spills, change in reservoir storage, vapour-seepage loss, reservoir storage, depth at lowest sluice.

SRIYANI DIAS AND K. R. K. ANURADHA KOSGAMAGE Department of Zoology, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka ABSTRACT Ants are an essential biotic component in terrestrial ecosystems in Sri Lanka. Worker ants were surveyed in six forests, uncultivated lands and, vegetable and fruit fields in two Districts of the dry zone, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, from November, 2007 to October, 2008 by employing several sampling methods simultaneously along five, 100 m transects. Soil sifting, litter sifting, honey-baiting and hand collection were carried out at 5 m intervals along each transect. Twenty pitfall traps were set up throughout each site and collected after five hours. Air and soil temperatures, soil pH and soil moisture at each transect were also recorded. Use of several sampling methods yielded a higher value for species richness than just one or two methods; values for each land ranged from 19 – 43 species. Each land had its own ant community and members of Amblyoponinae, Cerapachyinae, Dorylinae, Leptanillinae and Pseudomyrmecinae were recorded for the first time from the dry zone. Previous records of 40 species belonging to 23 genera in 5 subfamilies for the Anuradhapura District are updated to 78 species belonging to 36 genera in 6 subfamilies. Seventy species belonging to thirty one genera in 9 subfamilies recorded from the first survey of ants in Polonnaruwa lands can be considered a preliminary inventory of the District; current findings updated the ant species recorded from the dry zone to 92 of 42 genera in 10 subfamilies.

ABSTRACT A specimen of the colubrid genus Ahaetulla Link, 1807 collected in 2002 in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, proves to be the fi rst record of Ahaetulla mycterizans (Linnaeus, 1758) for this Indonesian island. Th is species was previ- KEY WORDS ously known from Java, West Malaysia and southern Peninsular Th ailand. Th e Reptilia, Serpentes, discovery of this specimen constitutes an opportunity to redefi ne and illustrate Colubridae, this rare and poorly known species and to compare it with the more common Ahaetulla mycterizans, Ahaetulla prasina (Boie, 1827). Additionally, an identifi cation key of the species Ahaetulla prasina, Sumatra, of Ahaetulla from the Indo-Malayan Region is proposed. Th is addition brings Indonesia. to 134 the number of snake species currently known from Sumatra Island.
