News Release _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Kevin Kerstein Publicity Manager Churchill Downs Racetrack (610) 420-6971 (mobile) (502) 635-4712 (office) [email protected] SCHERER GETS ULTIMATE SURPRISE AS FAMILY, FRIENDS TRAVEL FROM ACROSS COUNTRY TO CELEBRATE 80 TH BIRTHDAY LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Friday, June 28, 2019) – When trainer Merrill Scherer attended Friday’s races at Churchill Downs, one of the biggest surprises met him when family and friends from across the country surprised the veteran conditioner for an advance celebration of his 80 th birthday. “I can’t believe I was swindled in to coming over for this,” Merrill joked. “This is unbelievable. I can’t believe everyone around the racetrack was able to keep their mouths shut and not tell me. This is a moment I will never forget.” Five of Scherer’s sons attended Friday, including fellow trainer Gary Scherer , who flew in from Minnesota where he currently is stabled at Canterbury Park. “The Scherers typically don’t see each other more than once a year,” said Clay Scherer , Merrill’s son and Kentucky-based bloodstock agent. “To get everyone together, including a lot of his owners, is very special.” Scherer began his training career in 1962 and has been at it ever since. Scherer has spent the majority of his career based in the Midwest with stints in Illinois, Kentucky and Louisiana. It wasn’t until 1993 when he won his first graded stakes race with Little Bro Lantis in the Stars and Stripes Handicap (GIII) at Arlington. Since statistics started being regularly kept for horse racing in 1976, Scherer has won 1,410 races with earnings of more than $24.6 million. -

I will then forward the full Kentucky Derby analysis to you by electronic mail. Thank you… _____________________________________________________ SANTA ANITA (THE GREAT RACE PLACE) Friday, May 5, 2017 FOR AMUSEMENT---AND NOT BEMUSEMENT---ONLY!!! (Of course, these are recommendations only, and there are no guarantees in this sport, but that is what generates its mystique. And so, please follow your own heart and mind, considering me as a mere advisor, when making your selections. In any event, I do wish you all the best in your quest to “predict the future,” because it ain’t easy. And remember, horses, just like us, have aches and pains, headaches, suffer fatigue, etc. Try not to get mad at me, I usually have excellent days, occasionally, not-so-excellent days: with all of the informative past performance data we handicappers have in front of us, we have no idea how a particular horse feels at race time. By way of example, maybe that 50/1 colt is in a big hurry because he has a hot fillie waiting for him back at the barn…so please stick with me if there are a few “speed-bumps” along the way.) This analysis is prepared under the reasonable assumption that (i) all turf races will be run on a “firm” turf track, and (ii) all dirt races will be run on a track graded “fast.” Should different conditions exist at post time for a given race, please temper these selections with your own best judgment in light of less-than ideal conditions. -
Practical Joke Gets Last Laugh in Hopeful at the Barn.@ a Debut Winner at Churchill May 4, Classic Empire Was Coming Off a Win in the July 2 GIII Bashford Manor S
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2016 FUTURITY A WORK OF ART FOR KLIMT PRACTICAL JOKE GETS Kaleem Shah=s Klimt (Quality Road) sailed home an easy LAST LAUGH IN HOPEFUL 4 1/4-length winner of Monday=s GI Del Mar Futurity, a race won the last two seasons by subsequent GI Kentucky Derby winners American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and Nyquist (Uncle Mo). Breaking from the outside in a field of six, Klimt was within striking distance in fourth down the backstretch as favored and fellow >TDN Rising Star= Straight Fire (Dominus) took the field through a quarter in :22.33. The favorite was pressed through a half-mile in :44.38 and looked well in control, but Klimt was gobbling up ground and drew on even terms with the pacesetter at the top of the lane. He turned back the favorite with a furlong to run and drew clear effortlessly. AComing to the top of the stretch, I knew he was loaded and I said, >I just hope that other horse [Straight Fire] doesn=t have another gear,=@ said trainer Bob Baffert, who was winning his 13th Futurity. AIt was very exciting to watch.@ Cont. p5 Practical Joke | Sarah K Andrew Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence=s Practical Joke (Into IN TDN EUROPE TODAY Mischief) provided a fitting close-day exclamation point on a IDAHO CONFIRMED FOR LEGER; NAVAN OUT Saratoga meeting dominated by trainer Chad Brown and jockey Idaho (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) heads 15 remaining in Saturday’s G1 Jose Ortiz with his late-running victory in Monday=s GI Hopeful S. -

Kentucky Derby Comments by Brock Sheridan Photos by Coady and Chelsea Durand
Kentucky Derby Comments By Brock Sheridan Photos by Coady and Chelsea Durand #1 Known Agenda, 6-1 Drawing the inside post is his biggest problem. He won the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in his last start, and an allowance race, also at Gulfstream, before that on Feb. 26 and is trained by two-time Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher (Always Dreaming, 2017 and Super Saver, 2010). The Florida Derby has produced more Ken- tucky Derby winners than any other prep race (24) and six Kentucky Derby winners since 2000. Third in the Rem- sen (G2) won by Brooklyn Strong at Aqueduct on Dec. 5 and fifth in the Sam Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 6, Known Agenda looks to be a “getting good at the right time” horse with the addition of blinkers for his last two races. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is a plus, even among the world’s best and post one. Known Agenda #2 Like the King, 50-1 Won the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in his last race and his first career victory was on turf, so rac- ing on dirt for him is a question mark. In two starts on dirt, he was second in his career debut in July and third against allowance horses at Keeneland in October. Although this is the first Derby starter for trainer Wesley Ward, he has a reputation for his horses performing well on a world stage. Like the King #3 Brooklyn Strong, 50-1 Was the last to qualify for the Kentucky Derby as he made the field over the weekend when others were with- drawn. -
