And therefore, because I too have known some consolation from speech had with one who was a witness thereof, am I now minded to write of the sufferings which have sprung out of my misfortunes, for the eyes of one who, though absent, is of himself ever a consoler. ABSTRACT Toward a Protestant Theology of Celibacy: Protestant Thought in Dialogue with John Paul II’s Theology of the Body Russell Joseph Hobbs, M.A., D.Min. Mentor: Ralph C. Wood, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the theology of celibacy found both in John Paul II’s writings and in current Protestant theology, with the aim of developing a framework and legitimation for a richer Protestant theology of celibacy. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis. Chapter 2 reviews the Protestant literature on celibacy under two headings: first, major treatments from the Protestant era, including those by Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, various Shakers, and authors from the English Reformation; second, treatments from 1950 to the present. The chapter reveals that modern Protestants have done little theological work on celibacy. Self-help literature for singles is common and often insightful, but it is rarely theological. Chapter 3 synthesizes the best contemporary Protestant thinking on celibacy under two headings: first, major treatments by Karl Barth, Max Thurian, and Stanley Grenz; second, major Protestant themes in the theology of celibacy. The fourth chapter describes the foundation of John Paul II’s theology of human sexuality and includes an overview of his life and education, an evaluation of Max Scheler’s influence, and a review of Karol Wojtyla’s Love and Responsibility and The Acting Person . Chapter 5 treats two topics. First, it describes John Paul II’s, Theology of the Body , and more particularly the section entitled “Virginity for the Sake of the Kingdom.” There he examines Jesus’ instruction in Matt 19:11-12, celibacy as vocation, the superiority of celibacy to marriage, celibacy as redemption of the body, Paul’s instructions in 1 Cor 7, and virginity as human destiny. -

The Early Church Fathers on Clerical Celibacy Critics of clerical celibacy will often allege that it is unnatural and an invention of the Catholic Church. However, celibacy has its roots in Scripture and the practice of the early Church. As the apostle Paul tells us: “I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is divided” (1 Corinthians 7:32-33). Jesus commends those who are celibate for the sake of the kingdom. In Matthew 19:12 He says the following: “Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it.” Clement of Rome Let our whole body, then, be preserved in, Christ Jesus; and let everyone be subject to his neighbor, according to the special gift bestowed upon him. Let the strong not despise the weak, and let the weak show respect unto the strong. Let the rich man provide for the wants of the poor; and let the poor man bless God, because He hath given him one by whom his need may be supplied. Let the wise man display his wisdom, not by [mere] words, but through good deeds. Let the humble not bear testimony to himself, but leave witness to be borne to him by another. -

It is this angelic purity which secures to virginity its highest reward, and the Apostle might have seemed to despise a course of life which involves no guilt. Nevertheless in the immediate context he adds,4252 “But I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful. I think therefore that this is good by reason of the present distress, namely, that it is good for a man to be as he is.” What is meant by present distress?4253“Woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days!” The reason why the wood grows up is that it may be cut down. The field is sown that it may be reaped. The world is already full, and the population is too large for the soil. Every day we are being cut down by war, snatched away by disease, swallowed up by shipwreck, although we go to law with one another about the fences of our property. It is only one addition to the general rule which is made by those who follow the Lamb, and who have not defiled their garments, for they have continued in their virgin state. -

Yvette was beside herself with grief. Abduction, though not uncommon in the Middle Ages, had serious social consequences for the abductor, but also for the victim. The scandal had the potential to ruin the girl’s virginal reputation, as well as Yvette’s quasi-saintly image. -

The Sacred and the Mundane: Biblical Bread and Priestly Wifehood in “The Wife of Bath’s Prologue” Jocelyn Diemer Abstract: This essay examines the bread imagery used by Alison, Chaucer’s Wife of Bath, in her prologue as it relates to her defense of marriage. Drawing from a range of theological ideas about bread and virtue—including those of Alison’s primary sources, Saint Jerome and the Apostle Paul—I argue that Alison’s view of wifehood as a priestly role is supported by an interpretation of scripture that is both biblically sound and culturally radical. To understand the significance of the Wife of Bath’s theol- ogy, it is useful to briefly compare her with the other two female pilgrim-narrators in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (1387–1400). In his introduction to the Tales, John Hirsh writes that “Medieval religious women did not love Christ as a way to power … yet their devout practices could indeed evoke authority, and so influence many about them” (95). The Prioress and the Second Nun are models of this form of pious authority. Their tales and prologues promote the chastity, steadfastness, and innocence exemplified by the Virgin Mary and other female saints. However, Alison pushes back against Hirsh’s assessment. As we will see, she draws her authority not from a devout cloistered lifestyle, but rather from a demonstrated understanding of the Bible combined with a worldly background as a married wom- an. Throughout her protracted prologue, she continually defends the spiritual legitimacy and autonomy of married women. She questions the demonized or idealized female caricatures presented by her fellow pilgrims and offers a 16 | The Albatross view of marriage and sexuality that is informed by her own lived experience as a five-time wife. -

The Early Church Fathers (38 Volumes) represent the first primary sources of Christian history following the canon of the New Testament, and as such are invaluable resources for the serious student of early Christian history, doctrine, and ethics. The Early Church Fathers consists on the following 3 sets which are also available separately: The Ante-Nicene Fathers (10 Volumes) ranges from the Apostolic Fathers to various third and fourth century sources including the liturgies and ancient Syriac documents. It was intended to comprise translations into English of all the extant works of the Fathers (with the exception of the more bulky works of Origen) down to the date of the first General Council held at Nicaea in 325 A.D. The basic aim of the translations has been to strive for literary exactness, placing the English reader as nearly as possible on an equal footing with those who are able to read the original. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers Series I (14 Volumes) consists of eight volumes of the writings of St. Augustine, the greatest and most influential of the early Church Fathers, and six volumes of the treatises and homilies of St. Chrysostom, one of the great preachers of the early church. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers Series II (14 Volumes) contains in fourteen volumes the works of the Greek Fathers from Eusebius to John of Damascus and the Latin Fathers from Hilary to Gregory the Great. Several of the writings appear for the first time in English.
