CALDER Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, PO Box 698, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3J 2T9 Abstract: Nova Scotia during the Carboniferous lay at the heart of palaeoequatorial Euramerica in a broadly intermontane palaeoequatorial setting, the Maritimes-West-European province; to the west rose the orographic barrier imposed by the Appalachian Mountains, and to the south and east the Mauritanide-Hercynide belt. The geological affinity of Nova Scotia to Europe, reflected in elements of the Carboniferous flora and fauna, was mirrored in the evolution of geological thought even before the epochal visits of Sir Charles Lyell. The Maritimes Basin of eastern Canada, born of the Acadian-Caledonian orogeny that witnessed the suture of Iapetus in the Devonian, and shaped thereafter by the inexorable closing of Gondwana and Laurasia, comprises a near complete stratal sequence as great as 12 km thick which spans the Middle Devonian to the Lower Permian. Across the southern Maritimes Basin, in northern Nova Scotia, deep depocentres developed en echelon adjacent to a transform platelet boundary between terranes of Avalon and Gondwanan affinity. The subsequent history of the basins can be summarized as distension and rifting attended by bimodal volcanism waning through the Dinantian, with marked transpression in the Namurian and subsequent persistence of transcurrent movement linking Variscan deformation with Mauritainide-Appalachian convergence and Alleghenian thrusting. This Mid- Carboniferous event is pivotal in the Carboniferous evolution of Nova Scotia. Rapid subsidence adjacent to transcurrent faults in the early Westphalian was succeeded by thermal sag in the later Westphalian and ultimately by basin inversion and unroofing after the early Permian as equatorial Pangaea finally assembled and subsequently rifted again in the Triassic.

This layer of rock, the “Burlington-Keokuk Fish Bed,”1 is stratigraphically consistent and laterally extensive in exposures of the Burlington Limestone near its type section along the Iowa-Illinois border. Deposition of the fish bed occurred on the Burlington Continental Shelf carbonate ramp off the subtropical western coast of Laurussia during the Lower Carboniferous (Late Tournaisian; Osagean) due to a drop in sea level, although the specific mechanism(s) that concentrated the vertebrate fossils remain(s) unknown.

They are small fishes with bones and scales covered with ganoine. All characters observed, such as nasals meeting in the midline, a keystone- like dermosphenotic, absence of post-rostral bone, two infraorbitals between dermosphenotic and jugal, large antorbital, and two postcleithra, suggest that the new materials belong to a single, new Platysiagum species, P.sinensis sp. nov. Three genera are ascribed to Platysiagidae: Platysiagum, Hel- molepis and Caelatichthys. However, most specimens of the first two genera are imprints or fragment- ary. The new, well-preserved specimens from the Luoping Biota provide more detailed anatomical in- formation than before, and thus help amend the concept of the Platysiagidae. The Family Platysiagidae was previously classed in the Perleidiformes. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that the Platysiagidae is a member of basal Neopterygii, and its origin seems to predate that of Perleidiformes.

Identifying Linton Paleoniscoid Fish
Identifying Paleoniscoid Fish from Linton, Ohio This is my meager attempt to help collectors to identify their Linton paleoniscoids with hopefully, minimal effort. I have had some experience in identifying Linton fossils and hope to impart some of what I have learned, or should I say, what I have remembered, about the identification of Linton’s paleoniscoid fishes to collectors both old and new to the Linton experience. As my collections from Linton have long been out of my hands (see document “My Linton Collection and Recollections” in this post), I must rely on memory and what literary resources and limited photographic images (only 7) are at my disposal. Paleoniscoid (Palaeoniscoid) Taxonomy Murky waters this taxonomy thing, always in constant revision and subjective review leading to much disagreement and confuscation between various workers, authors and ME! This is just one of a variety of ways to express the taxonomic arrangement of the Linton bony fish (exclusive of the other Linton fishes like sharks, lungfish and coelacanths). Abstract: Middle Triassic (Muschelkalk) limestones and dolostones of southern Poland contain vertebrate re- mains, which can be used for palaeoecological and palaeogeographical analyses. The results presented concern vertebrate remains uncovered at four localities in Upper Silesia and one on Opole Silesia, a region representing the south-eastern margin of the Germanic Basin in Middle Triassic times. The most abundant remains in this assem- blage are fish remains, comprising mostly actinopterygian teeth and scales. Chondrichthyan and sauropsid remains are less common. Reptilian finds include vertebrae, teeth and fragments of long bones, belonging to aquatic or semi-aquatic reptiles, such as nothosaurids, pachypleusorosaurids, and ichthyosaurids. Also, coprolites of possibly durophagous and predacious reptiles occur. In the stratigraphic column of Mikołów, actinopterygian remains are the most numerous and no distinct changes of the taxonomic composition occur.
