Royals Notes - Tampa Bay Rays @ Kansas City Royals - Monday, August 28, 2017

This & That A TRIO OF BLANKINGS--The three consecutive shutouts incurred over the weekend in Cleveland marked the second time in franchise history that the Royals were held scoreless in a 3-game series...the other occurred on July 5, 6 & 7, 2004 against the Twins in the Metrodome...the starting trio of Brad Radke, Johan Santana and Kyle Lohse and a handful of relievers kept Kansas City off the board in a 3-gamer indoors...the Royals were then blanked in the first 5.0 innings of a game in Baltimore on July 9, but scored five runs in the sixth and ended up 7-0 winners. FEW RISPS, NO REWARDS--This record setting streak of scoreless innings has seen opportunities to break the drought, but the club has not been able to get a key hit...the Royals were 0-for-5 on Sunday with runners in scoring position and have gone 0-for-16 over the last four games, as both runs from Thursday’s loss to the Rockies came via the home run ball...KC’s last hit with a runner in scoring position was Eric Hosmer’s walk-off 3-run blast to end Wednesday’s 6-4 triumph over Colorado. A SET WITH THE EAST--The Royals will take a break from playing intra-divisional foes with this 3-game set against the Rays that starts tonight...KC is 14-11 against the East this year, with seven remaining on the slate...once this series ends on Wednesday, Kansas City will play 17 in a row against Central Division foes...KC has now lost five of their last six meetings within the A.L. Central, all to the Indians in that span, after reeling off 10 wins in 11 divisional contests...all told, Kansas City is 24-29 against its own division after starting this year in the hole, going 3-13 within the Central....KC is done with teams from the A.L. West, finishing at 19-15, which featured an 18-9 mark against all teams in the West not named “Texas” after going just 1-6 vs. the Rangers this year...the Royals are 7-10 against the National League with three to go against Arizona...of the final 33 games, 23 are within the Central. THE REMAINING OPPOSITION--With 33 games to go, Kansas City’s remaining opponents have a composite record of 565-584 for a .492 winning pct...of the eight opponents remaining on Kansas City’s schedule, four have winning records (Cleveland, Minnesota, New York and Arizona)...Kansas City has 23 games left with clubs from within the A.L. Central including Cleveland (4), Chicago (6), Minnesota (7) and Detroit (6)...the four A.L. Central rivals have a combined mark of 248-269 for a .480 winning pct...the remaining non-Central squads on KC’s schedule are Tampa Bay (3), Toronto (3) and the Yankees (1), who have a combined record of 248-262, a .486 pct., while the National League’s are the last opponent of the regular season and has a 73-58 ledger. MOOSE ON HOMER HIATUS--Mike Moustakas, who served as the DH the last two days in Cleveland after sitting out with a sore knee, has not homered since August 15 in Oakland, a span of nine games without a blast, which matches his longest drought of the year...Kansas City’s 32-year single-season home run record is in jeopardy as Moose’s 35 blasts on the year are just one behind Steve Balboni’s 1985 record of 36...the 35 homers make Moustakas the most prolific left-handed home run hitter in team annals, passing John Mayberry’s 34 in 1975...Moose is currently tied with Gary Gaetti (35 in 1995) for second on the single-season list...he has also climbed into the discussion as the American League home run king, with his 35 roundtrippers tied with Justin Smoak and Joey Gallo for third in the A.L. behind Aaron Judge’s 37 and Khris Davis with 36...no Royal has ever won an A.L. home run title. LAST RUNS WERE HOME RUNS--The Royals haven’t scored since Whit Merrifield and Brandon Moss each hit solo homers in the first two innings of last Thursday’s loss to the Rockies which has kept KC at 157 home runs on the year...the Royals have 33 games remaining to break the all-time single-season long ball record of 168 established in 1987...the current total is the fourth best in team annals, three more than the 1985 World Championship club and one behind the ‘97 squad for third most...the 2017 Royals are on a pace for 197 homers which would demolish the old standard. HOZ AMONG THE A.L. LEADERS--Eric Hosmer was 1-for-2 in Sunday’s loss at Cleveland...his 46 multi-hit games this year rank tied with Elvis Andrus for third in the American League behind the White Sox Jose Abreu (49) and Houston’s Jose Altuve (52)...Hosmer is two games shy of his single-season best for multi-hit games, delivering 48 during the 2012 season...Hoz has now reached base safely in 21 consecutive games dating back to August 6, hitting .347 (26-for-75) with 14 walks and a .449 on-base pct...”Papo” enters tonight second in the Junior Circuit in hits (157), third in batting average (.320) and third in on-base pct. (.384)...Hosmer was hitting .185 when play began on April 23, but has upped that 135 points to his present .320 mark by hitting .341 (145-for-425) with a .404 on-base and a .541 slugging percentage in the 112 games since. DUPER DUPED BY N.Y.--Kansas City replay specialist Bill Duplissea was saddled with a “stands” on a replay review in Oakland on August 16 that would have ended the ball game...it appeared that he may have been accurate in calling for the review as to whether Ryon Healy’s foot hit the bag before Eric Hosmer caught the throw, but NYC couldn’t find enough evidence to overturn the on-field decision...Duper is 18-for-25 for Major League best a 72% success rate, while the Yankees are the only other club above 70% by making good on 20-of-28 challenges ...Bill closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, converting 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31). TO ERR IS HUMAN--Kansas City committed its 59th error of the year on Sunday, falling back into a tie with Colorado and Miami for the Major League lead in fewest miscues...KC has been guilty of 16 errors in the last 18 games after committing only 43 errors in the first 110 games of the season...sound defense has been paramount to the club’s success as the Royals have gone 43-36 in games without an error...the Royals are on a pace to break the franchise record for fewest errors in a season, with the 162-game club mark of 85 set in 2013...the 1981 and 1994 squads had lower error totals of 72 and 80, respectively, but each were recorded in strike-shortened seasons...at the current pace, KC would commit just 74 errors this year. AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his seventh full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he enters tonight two games below the .500 mark at 613-615 with Kansas City, which is still an impressive total considering he had a 198-253 mark in his first two-plus seasons here...he has gone 415-361 (.535) since the start of 2013...his Kansas City win total has shattered Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers is games (2,187) and wins (1,070)...his postseason record of 22-9 represents a .710 winning pct., which is tops among all managers who have been at the helm for at least 20 postseason games...he’s also 2-0 in managing the American League All-Star team, winning in both Cincinnati (‘15) and San Diego (‘16)...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002).
