Official Beta Sig Newsletter Official Beta Sig Newsletter Fall 2010 Established 2006 Historian address Unity, Pride, Honor Historian, Another Eventful semester has wrapped up and the next Newsletter of Beta Sigma Epsilon is here. There is been so much that Beta Sig has done during the Fall semester of 2010 and the Gentlemen of Beta Sig has experienced and grown from all of it. We have invited new brothers into the fraternity, strived for academic excellence, served for the betterment of the community, increased our outreach to other organizations, become more mature and professional as individuals, and much more. As the Historian for Beta Sigma Epsilon, I have improved my time management skills, note taking abilities, and creativity. Being historian as also made me a better leader and more outspoken. As a member of Beta Sigma Epsilon, I have improved on all levels in accordance with our pillars; Academia, professionalism, brotherhood, community service, and cultural awareness. As each semester passes; I grow and learn being a Beta Sigma Epsilon fraternity member. I hope this Newsletter gives you an idea of all we have done. Beta Sigma Epsilon strives for establishing a sense of “brotherly love” within the fraternity as well as a friendly environment with the entire community. This semester, gamma chapter hosted a variety of social events within the brotherhood, other Greeks, potential new members, and community. Brotherhood socials There have been a number of socials that were exclusively for the just the brothers. Some of these socials include the pledge event barbecue social and the 2nd Annual casino night. At the barbeque, we enjoyed each others company at the unofficial beta house. The pledges made a delicious lunch for us and we watched football, played games and socialized. Casino night was also located at the unofficial Beta house. Brothers played casino games with fake money, with the brother with most chips won a prize. Both events were very successful and fun. Although we don’t have many official social events, we are a brotherhood and are always doing something social all semester long. Greek Socials This semester we had the pleasure of getting more acquainted to the sisters of Theta Nu Xi sorority by having several socials with them. Beta Sig hosted the Theta Nu ladies to a friendly game of volleyball with a food social afterwards. Of course, Beta Sig won the match but we were generous in our victory. A very fun and exciting event it was, socializing and relaxing with the girls of Theta Nu. We had another social with just Beta Sig providing the food, such as a Beta Sig Gentlemen would do, and socialized the entire evening. Serenades! This year, Beta Sigma Epsilon Gamma chapter participated in its first serenades event on campus. Serenades are when the fraternities go to each sorority house and sings to them. In the past, it was talked about among the brothers but never done. This year we came together and performed two songs for all the lovely sorority ladies we sang to. Being the first year performing in serenades, we sounded nervous and forgot a few lines but grew more in confidence after each house. We all had a blast, singing and getting to know the other sororities on campus. Cultural awareness Another pillar of Beta Sigma Epsilon is cultural awareness. As a multi cultural fraternity, we try to become more aware with each others cultures and other cultures as well. We are historically Native American and we generally focus on Native American culture, but we do partake in other cultures as well. Laguna Feast Another event during the pledge process, the brothers took the pledges to the pueblo of Laguna for their annual feast. We spent the day up their observing the festival and traditions that are displayed at a pueblo feast. We ate tons of food, watched the traditional dances, and walked the booths setup across the pueblo for the feast. Professionalism and Academics The goal of any college student is to not only graduate, but graduate with a very good education and GPA. Beta sig’s main goal for all of its members is to have all of them graduate with their desired degree and have a very good G.P.A. in order to get into graduate school or be easily employed into the field that the brother wishes. Also, through a brother’s education, we want them not only to graduate but learn how to be professional and apply that professionalism into the real world. Tailor and resume workshop During the pledge process, we had a tailor and resume event that taught the brothers how to dress business professional. Pledges and brothers learned the basic dress code attire required of professional dress, how to tie a tie, and how to dress up accordingly. Brothers learned what kinds of shirts, pants, socks, shoes and ties were acceptable as a professional dress. We apply this knowledge at our events and at our weekly meetings. We dress and act professionally at all our events and meetings. The resume part was building up our resumes. We learned how to effectively make a resume and were challenged to compose our own resume to be reviewed. Meet and Greet Martin Heinrich During the 2010 city campaign, senator nominee Martin Heinrich came to one of our brother’s homes, Scott Riley, and discussed the importance of voting in the election. This was a great opportunity for the brotherhood to see how to be professional as well as get educated in why it is important to vote. Also, it was strictly informative and no campaigning was done while Martin Heinrich talked with the brothers. Beta Sigma Epsilon is a non partisan organization. Overall, a good and educational event. Community Involvement Community Service is one of the five pillars of Beta Sigma Epsilon. We strive for excellence in serving our community and even though we are required to do a minimal amount of service hours, our Brothers go above and beyond and strive for 20 hours a semester. As a fraternity we have performed over 120 hours of community service. We do community service hours on our personal time but we also organize group community service events as a fraternity. We believe working together is the best way to serve our community. JDRF- Walk to Cure Diabetes On November 6th 2010, over 4,000 people were attending the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes event at the Balloon Fiesta field and Beta Sig was of those people. The walk is dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and is a national event. The goal of the Walk this year was to raise over $90million for Diabetic research. We were able to raise over $400 to donate to JDRF helping them reach their goal for the year. This was the fraternity’s philanthropy for the semester and was a major stepping stone for the fraternity in establishing future philanthropies and how to reach the goal set to helping that philanthropy, example being the Burrito sale that raised $321 on October 31st 2010. Joy Junction Joy Junction was a possible philanthropy for the Fraternity because of what it provides and does for the community. Joy Junction is a domestic violence facility but also a shelter for homeless, needy, and/or run a ways. They do not turn away anyone, they make accommodations for anyone if they need a place to stay, something to eat and offer classes/courses for people who need to get back on their feet. We visited Joy Junction as our community service event for the pledge process. The guys were given a tour and found out it was a very good facility and place to be. After the tour, cleaning up of the facility commenced. An entire field was cleared of weeds and trash. It was an eye opening experience seeing all of the people down on their luck and hopefully Beta Sig can visit Joy Junction soon down the road Fall Frenzy This semester, the fraternity signed up for the annual Fall Frenzy event on the UNM campus. It is a student organization event where each group is assigned an area of campus and it up. Each area had certain jobs to be done such as raking leaves, digging up dirt, picking up trash, planting trees, replacing wood mulch at the base of trees, and so on. Beta Sig was assigned the Southeast corner of campus near University and Central. We worked along with other fraternity’s and replaced the wood chip mulch and dug out dirt for the UNM Physical Plant Department. The event was very successful and is just a small thing we do for our community, especially our University. Class Crawl Another UNM campus event, took place before the start of the fall semester. Tours were offered on freshman day which took place the day before the semester started to incoming freshman. The tours consisted of a handful of students in each group, and tour guides led students around campus to show the freshman where each of their classes would be located.
