Mike Covell : Annie Chapman before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Annie Chapman:

Once the discovery of the victim has been described, this book then faithfully reprints verbatim (apparently) every single newspaper article that was ever published about the murder, consisting of daily updates repeating the same things over and over and over and over and over, all the rumors, speculation, statements from people that were nearby but didn't see or hear anything, the lack of progress in finding the perpetrator, and so on. It became too boring to continue, to be honest, and I lost interest. I tried skipping over the stuff that was repeated but it seemed to have no end, so I gave up.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent Ripper book worthy of your attentionBy Phil CarterAnnie Chapman's known life, and death, is totally researched and reviewed by the author. Hundreds upon hundreds of newspaper articles have been transcripted for our perusal, with the result being that we now have an overall picture of this poor victim of the Murders like no other that has ever been presented before. As one reads the newspaper accounts, one gets the "feeling" of 1888... the panic... the local pride, the uncertainty, the sensationalism and the sense of complete mess the whole scenario brought about with her demise. The author has managed to put so many things together from so many sources, both contemporary and otherwise, that the result is as near a complete work of Annie Chapman that it is possible to achieve. This book is highly recommended to all those interested in the and "", and is well worth the outlay. Do not hesitate...it will leave you with many thoughts having read it... and what is more, those thoughts will make you pick it up again and again. Fascinating!By SashadooA superb book which brings together the reports of the contemporary press at the time of Annie Chapman's murder. Long before the days of the internet, radio or television, the newly burgeoning popular press quickly transmitted the news of Annie Chapman's murder around the world. Up until a few months prior to the murder, such news might have taken weeks to reach the other side of the world, but, as is shown in Mr. Covell's book, the news was available to readers in Australia and the USA within a day or two of the murder, a considerable feat for the time. Of particular interest to me was that the author gave us the contemporary news reports exactly as they were written back in 1888, giving us a historical insight into the grammar, spelling and use of punctuation in the Victorian era. Quite fascinating! As one of the world's leading ripperologists, it would have been all too easy for the author to indulge his own opinions and give us his 'take' on the facts of the case. I was pleased to see that he studiously avoided doing this, sticking instead to giving us a straight forward factual rendition of the events of the time, in a way never before presented. Do NOT expect this book to be one of those that sensationlize the case, or for the author to espouse his personal theories as to the identity of Jack the Ripper. It is not that kind of book. For the serious student of history and the Victorian era however, this book is a definite 'must read'. Recomended!

The day of September 8th, 1888 started with the end of Annie Chapman. What can be said or written about Annie Chapman that has not already been? That was the question Mike Covell was asked recently, and his reply was: a lot. We know of only a handful of reports and primary sources regarding her life and untimely death at the hands of a known only as Jack the Ripper, but there is always new material being discovered. Annie Chapman's life was a tragic one, with suffering and pain at almost every step. By the time of her death she had lost one child, separated from her husband, and seen him pass away. Whether we accept her as a victim of Jack the Ripper or not, her story deserves to be told. Her story as a wife, a mother and a victim. This is that story. Amazon #2 bestseller in English History. The book is also in development for a motion picture by Thunderball Films, LLC.
