As CEO I developed and implemented the business plan, in partnership with the Board. As Artistic Director I formed and delivered a wide range of cultural projects, focusing on contemporary craft, design and visual arts. Craft Victoria’s operation includes curatorial, retail, membership, research and communications functions, which are delivered by 12 staff. It is funded by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council and earns 30% of its income through retail and memberships. Australia Council for the Arts; Program Manager, Visual Arts/Crafts, 1999-2008. I supervised several grant categories (for individuals and organisations), and developed policies and strategic initiatives for the Visual Arts/Craft Board, in support of the Australia Council Corporate Plan. Duties included authorising grants (c.$5m pa), negotiating performance agreements, researching reports and providing advice to artists, arts organisations and the general public, and deputizing for the Director. I regularly developed strategic advice on industry issues relating to contemporary art practice in Australia, and participated in a wide range of fora within the organisation, including with regard to Indigenous art, multicultural arts, regional arts and international programs. Auspiced by Arts Victoria, projects included the development of a marketing strategy, editing publications and providing services to members and public. Victorian College for the Arts; Creative Editor for “Creating: the Victorian College for the Arts” (Macmillan Publishers Australia 2000). Other consultancies included providing curatorial services for local government and historical societies, and writing articles on ceramics for several international journals. Shepparton Art Gallery; Director, 1988-97. Responsibilities included creating and implementing an arts program for the Goulburn Valley public, management of staff and gallery budget, curating exhibitions and development of the collections. Achievements included increased attendances, improved relationships with community groups, expansion of the collection to include Indigenous art, public art commissions, major touring exhibitions and upgrades of all display, storage and office areas. Of particular note were the concept design and co- ordination of the fund-raising for the Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Ceramics Gallery, the establishment of the Sidney Myer Fund Australia Day International Ceramics Award and the curating of an international exhibition of Australian ceramics. Victorian Ministry for the Arts; Gallery Services Co-ordinator, 1986-88 / Registrar for the Regional Galleries Association of Victoria, 1983-85. Responsibilities included the development of a computerised collection management system for Victorian public galleries, administration of an art foundation and the provision of advice for projects such as capital works. Other duties included the management of the State Government Exhibitions Indemnification Scheme and co-ordination of the Regional Gallery Classification System. Responsible for a team of cataloguers who catalogued 13 regional gallery collections. Geelong Art Gallery; Curator, 1981-83. The focus of this position was on the care and display of the collection, exhibition installation, liaison with schools and facets of gallery administration. Initiated by Joe Pascoe in 2009, Craft Cubed includes curated exhibitions, online projects, public programs and numerous satellite events. Craft Cubed is held annually and is now funded by City of Melbourne. Core programs have include “City/Country” members exhibition 2009, “Playing Field” group exhibition, plus Michael Doolan installation Federation Square “Once Upon a Time”, Melbourne 2010, “material” group exhibition 2011, “The Melbourne Tapa” and “Tatau”, curated by Loketi Niua 2012. “Victoria: Buildings and Builders - Geelong and District”.
