CANCER VOICES NSW NEWSLETTER – December 2011 Newsletter 45 December 2011 Message to Members A Decade of Success: Cancer Voices NSW 2000-2010’ : Around 1,000 copies have been mailed to all CVN members and interested others, and to NSW Cancer Support Groups and Palliative Care Centres. This milestone publication has been enthusiastically received, and is a very useful profile tool for CVN. Telling people who we are, what we do and why, and what we have achieved in our first decade, has substantially added to the history and analysis of the cancer consumer advocacy movement. AGM and Get-together at Cancer Institute NSW - 8th February, 2012 : We hope to see you at this opportunity to learn more about CVN from our view point, and more broadly. The formal AGM will be short, then we can meet and greet each other, enjoy the update on the CINSW, and discuss cancer consumer needs and issues. Vale Sally Hodgkinson: We are deeply saddened by the death of our dear friend and colleague, Sally Hodgkinson on 28th September. Many of you will have known “Sally H” through her pivotal roles in the management of CVN’s major processes – Membership, Consumer Reps Program, and as Hon Secretary. We sorely miss her and her huge contribution to CVN, and other stakeholder organisations on which she served as consumer rep. (See more about Sally at pp 11-12). Highlights this Quarter: For details of follow-ups on the Government's 10th August commitments concerning Access to Palliative Care, IPTAAS Improvements, Consumer Engagement Strategies, and the CanRefer Directory – see inside. On 5th October, the first sods were turned to officially mark the beginning of construction of the Central Coast Cancer Centre. As readers will know, this Cancer Centre is the result of the long fought campaign by CVN for public radiotherapy facilities on the Central Coast. (See full story, p.4). The bill implements a more ethical framework for the New South Wales public sector and, importantly, creates the position of the Public Service Commissioner and the Public Service Commission Advisory Board. As defined in the Public Sector Employment and Management Act, "public sector" refers to all workers employed by the New South Wales Government, with the exception of the local government sector. It includes all the people that make our city and our State run so efficiently and effectively and who provide services to the community, such as the police, people working in the health sector, firefighters, workers in transport and the education sector and, of course, in State-owned corporations such as Sydney Water and Ausgrid. The people of New South Wales deserve the most transparent and accountable public service that can be provided by the Government. The Coalition Government is determined to do that. Government exists to provide services to its citizens that cannot be provided by the free market or by ready voluntary exchange between individuals. Every citizen accesses the services provided by the Government every day—from driving on our roads to drinking our water and using our public schools and hospitals.

    The Hon Chris Hartcher Minister for Resources and Energy Special Minister of State Minister for the Central Coast MEDIA RELEASE Friday 10 June 2011 $460,000 ARTS FUNDING PACKAGE FOR CENTRAL COAST Minister for the Central Coast, Chris Hartcher together with fellow Central Coast Members Chris Spence, Darren Webber and Chris Holstein today announced the award of a $460,000 funding package to position the region as a leading arts destination. Mr Hartcher said the annual funding of $230,000 over the next two years would support the professional development of local artists, encourage local engagement in contemporary arts practice and boost the local economy. “This package follows the release of a 2010 report by Lois Randall Creative Consulting which assessed arts infrastructure and resources in Gosford and Wyong,” Mr Hartcher said. “The Central Coast Art + Community 2010 Report recommended that Arts NSW provide a significant injection of funds to boost the region’s creative community over the next two years.” The $230,000 Arts NSW funding package in 2011 may include: Two-year Community Creative Producer Position – Setting up a network of community and industry partners and managing arts projects as part of the funding package. The position will be managed by Regional Development Australia Central Coast (RDACC) at the University of Newcastle’s Ourimbah Campus; Artist in Residence Project – Engaging an artist to work with the community and mentor emerging artists, research and create and publish local stories; and Digital Arts Residencies Project – Engaging three digital artists to work with young people to develop creative content. The residencies would be located at Gosford and Wyong youth centres.

Mr DARREN WEBBER (Wyong) [6.50 p.m.] (Inaugural Speech): Tonight I stand here with a sense of unreality. I never dreamed I would be a candidate for Parliament, and when the honour was bestowed on me I was challenged with the expectation that I could win a seat that the Liberal Party had never represented. Though I am young, my journey here has been a long one. For me, the path of community service began on the magnificent beaches of the Central Coast. Some of the most rewarding experiences in my life have occurred on the beach. Surf Life Saving Australia, an iconic Australian institution, coordinates thousands of volunteers like me who work hard to keep our beaches safe. It is my pleasure to acknowledge in the public gallery tonight Chad Griffiths and Stuart Harvey from Surf Life Saving Central Coast. My involvement with the movement goes back many years. I have had the honour of being Club Cadet of the Year and Junior Surf Life Saver of the Year. I have been elected to the positions of chief instructor, secretary, club captain and president. All these roles are unpaid and voluntary, requiring time above and beyond the countless hours devoted to performing patrols on weekends. Surf lifesaving has taught me many things, and rescuing someone from the surf is a real buzz. But the most rewarding experience happens early in summer on a Sunday morning. "Nippers" is the name given to all young children involved with the club.
