  • When Victims Rule
1 24 JEWISH INFLUENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA, Part II In 1985 Laurence Tisch, Chairman of the Board of New York University, former President of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, an active supporter of Israel, and a man of many other roles, started buying stock in the CBStelevision network through his company, the Loews Corporation. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media.

  • How Public Art Gets Lost - and Saved - in Philly
How public art gets lost - and saved - in Philly JANUARY 8, 2016 by Samantha Melamed For fans of public art in Philadelphia, it still stings to think about that day in 1998 when word got out that an iconic wall sculpture by artist Ellsworth Kelly had been removed from the old Greyhound office building, quietly sold, and given to New York's Museum of Modern Art. It wasn't the first or last great work of public art to be lost to Philadelphia through some combination of intercity poaching, heedless development, and neglect. In fact, even as the Gallery mall closed for renovations Jan. 1, the fate of its public art remained unclear. The same goes for other works that have languished in storage, with limited money for preservation. Still, losing the work by Kelly, who died Dec. 27, wasn't entirely a bad thing, said Penny Balkin Bach, executive director of the Association for Public Art, a nonprofit that commissions, preserves, and promotes works in the city. "The removal of the Kelly was this sort of slap-in-the-face wake-up call that we needed as a city and as a cultural community to pay more attention to these kinds of things," she said. Her organization has become more proactive since, as have art fans. "Having the public's eyes and ears alert is probably our greatest protection." Now, scrap yards call her when they come across bronze sculptures they suspect have been stolen, and New York gallery owners tip her off when important works come up for sale.

COMING 2 AMERICA - An American Marvel! Eddie Murphy reprises his role as the ever-charming Prince Akeem and leads an all-star cast for the much-anticipated sequel, COMING 2 AMERICA. Three decades and three beautiful daughters later, Akeem prepares to take over the reigns of his homeland of Zamunda. As antiquated gender roles are being challenged within his home, he is also faced with a new dilemma on the outside. While tradition has always required a male heir to take the throne, Akeem feels torn between following custom and creating change. While considering his eldest daughter, Meeka, who is the strongest choice, his rival, General Izzi, is plotting a union of dynasties with his son, Idi, as Meeka’s groom. Meanwhile, an ailing King Joffer delivers the shocking news that Akeem has a long-lost son, Lavelle, in Queens. After an unexpected turn of events, Akeem, now the King of Zamunda, along with his trusted confidante, Semmi, return to New York to tend to this unfinished royal family business. Upon finding Lavelle, Akeem convinces him to travel to Zamunda in order to learn the customs of royal life in preparation for becoming the heir to the throne. While Akeem smooths tensions with his wife and three daughters, General Izzi decides that his daughter, Bopoto, will become Lavelle’s wife. All the while, Lavelle is falling in love with his royal barber, Mirembe, who has dreams of owning her own barbershop. Arsenio Hall returns as Semmi, alongside James Earl Jones as King Jaffe Joffer, Shari Headley as Lisa, John Amos as Cleo McDowell, Louie Anderson as Maurice and the legendary barbershop crew who sparked the laughs in 1988 for COMING TO AMERICA.
