Overnight: Vancouver Day 2: Vancouver Sightseeing Join us on the Hop-On, Hop-Off bus, where you're stopping at 25 stops within downtown Vancouver and 6 stops in beautiful Stanley Park. Take the entire tour in two hours or spend the whole day experiencing different parts of the city. Included today is also a Vancouver Harbour Cruise and entrance to the Lookout. Afternoon North Shore Tour you begin with a slow drive over The Lion's Gate Bridge spanning the entrance to Vancouver's port. The longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed it offers unparalleled views of the harbour and English Bay beyond. Once across to the North Shore, it is a short drive up the mountain to your first stop at the Capilano Fish Hatchery (11am Tour Only). Then travel onto the Capilano Suspension Bridge. COVID-19 has had significant negative economic impact including on small businesses and neighbourhoods across Vancouver (due to closure periods, physical distancing requirements and costs of additional cleaning and safety protocols). A full economic recovery from COVID-19 is expected to take some time, likely years; 2. Vancouver’s Chinatown is a cultural gem. Considered the largest Chinatown in Canada, it has been a designated National Historic Site since June 2010. Chinatown was established even prior to the incorporation of the City of Vancouver. It is a community that has weathered two world wars – with Chinese Canadians fighting for a country in which they could not vote, race riots -- spurred on by anti-Asian sentiment, and discriminatory policies from all three levels of government, including the Chinese head tax, a freeway that would have paved over Chinatown, and even a federal order to ban the sale of delectable Chinese barbecued meats; 3. In recent years, Chinatown has been facing new challenges from the changing demographics of residents, to developmental pressures, as well as safety concerns related to its adjacency to the DTES, the epicenter of Vancouver’s mental health and addictions crisis and housing crisis; 4. Despite these adversities, Chinatown has persevered. There has been resurgence in interest in Chinatown with new shops and restaurants opening and inducing new and returning visitors, and a Cantonese language school organized by Youth Collaborative for Chinatown in partnership with the Wong’s Benevolent Association, aimed reaching youth and adults eager to reconnect with their heritage.

Douglas Wildlife Bulletin No. B-91 March 1999 British Columbia, Canada’s most westerly province, has a bounty of biological diversity. British Columbia’s snowclad peaks, rain-drenched forests, arid grasslands, all sizes of rivers, lakes, and wetlands, and a long and rugged coast provide habitats for more species of living organisms than are found anywhere else in Canada. However, this very diversity means that there is much to be discovered about these organisms — their distribution, abundance, habitat requirements, and interrelationships with their environment. Increasing our knowledge of this biodiversity will help us with the complex task of sustainably managing our land and waters. In 1992, the Provincial Government initiated a co-operative biodiversity research program with funding from the Corporate Resource Inventory Initia- tive, the British Columbia Ministries of Forests (Research Branch), Environment, Lands, and Parks (Wildlife and Habitat Protection Branches), and Tourism and Culture (Royal B.C. Museum); and the Forest Resource Develop- ment Agreement (FRDA II). In 1996, funding from Forest Renewal BC (FRBC) was received for a biodiversity research extension proposal. One goal of the original research program, and more recently the FRBC extension project, is to extend information to scientists, resource managers, and the public through biodiversity publications. These publications are intended to increase awareness and understanding of biodiversity, promote the concepts and importance of conserving biodiversity, and communicate provincial government initiatives related to biodiversity. We hope that they will be used as tools for the conservation of British Columbia’s rich, living legacy.
