A shovel /brush and a hoe can sort these problems so keep up the good work. Cas tlelyons Community Alert A public meeting was held in Castlelyons Community centre recently to highlight the importance of public vigilance in helping the Gardaí in combating and preventing crime in the area. The meeting was attended by Sgt John Kelly, Crime Prevention Officer for the Fermoy area. Diarmuid Cronin , Community Development Officer for Munster and our local Garda Pat O Connor. Sgt Kelly spoke of the on going problem of fuel theft from diesel / central heating tanks, he suggested that the tanks be located if possible in more secure locations, as locking the tank is not sufficient especially plastic tanks which can easily be drained by drilling a hole. He also highlighted that theft from parked cars at graveyards, community centres, sports field car parks etc is still happening. Do not leave any valuables exposed on the seats of your parked car. Due to the recent shortage of animal feed there have been reports of the theft of bales of silage and hay. The theft of all kinds of metal is an on-going problem also. There have been a number of burglaries in the area over the past number of months and Sgt Kelly stressed the importance of turning on burglar alarms even at night as some houses were entered and robbed at night while the owners were sleeping. Burglar alarms should only be installed by reputable companies and should be serviced regularly. The rear door and windows are the most common entry points and should always be securely locked at night, and whenever the house is unattended, even for a short time during the day. He stressed the importance of taking down the Reg numbers of any strange vehicles and reporting any suspicious activity to the Gardai in Fermoy (Phone No 025 31222) and finally he thanked the community for their help in fighting and solving crime in the area. Diarmuid Cronin also spoke on some of the issues mentioned by Sgt Kelly and outlined how the criminals take advantage of the public especially the elderly. He spoke of the risk of opening your front door to strangers without first locking the back door. Never give money in advance to people for work that they have not completed. He also highlighted the importance of having smoke and carbon monoxide alarms fitted in all homes. He also advised that some homes in North East Cork are in a high risk area for Radon Gas and houses built without a proper radon barrier should be tested for the presence of radon gas. This test can be carried out for € 50 approx. Contact The Radiological Protection Institute Of Ireland at 01 269 77 66 for information on how to get a test kit. The Committee would like to thank all those who attended and especially the guest speakers for giving very helpful advice on all aspects of home and personal security. Another public meeting will be held in the Autumn when the Gardai will again attend and give a more comprehensive discussion on all aspects of crime prevention. Castlelyons N.S.
