Tour le Solar System

York to Cycle Path June – July 2014

As part of the Cultural Festival leading up to the Grand Depart, Greenways Champions – a partnership of local Sustrans volunteer Rangers and Wildlife Trust – are working with local communities on a series of events along Route 65 of the National Cycle Network from York to Selby.

A complete make-over of the iconic 11-kilometere scale The Solar System model of the Solar System www.york.ac.uk/solar will culminate on 20th and 21st June with a two-day event of science, astronomy and cycling put on by the Physics Department of the University of York. (20th - schools only).

York Greenway Champions will be coordinating the programme and working with Greening the Greenway volunteers to ensure this key cycle access into York is in tip-top shape for visitors, with special themed planting for the event.

Riccall Carnival Two days of fun at the village at the end of the Solar System. Only a 14km traffic-free ride from York’s Millennium Bridge along Sustrans Route 65 on 28th and 29th June

Local History groups along the route are cooperating on a Local History project to highlight the heritage of the cycle path which was the main line from to Edinburgh before closure due to the short-lived Selby mines. The River Ouse which passes under the magnificent swing bridge at Naburn was once a busy commercial link to the sea.

Film The Globe community cinema in Selby will launch the festival with a day of cycle-related films. Local film production company Cinem@ will create a documentary recording the impact of the Tour and Cultural Festival on the villages along the route and show cycle and space themed films in community centres.

The Bridges along the route will host new artwork reflecting the themes of space, industrial Artwork heritage and cycling. Space-themed poetry selected by Dame Jocelyn Bell Burrell, past Poetry and Drama President of the Royal Astronomical Society will be displayed along the route along with Japanese Tanka poetry and the winners of a local poetry competition organised by York Bike Belles.

After the tour has left York, visitors and residents will be invited to cycle out from th 6 July – On Yer Bike Knavesmire to see the Greenway, have-a-go at sailing on the river and be entertained by Music Festival locally-based performers with World Music, theatre and poetry at Brunswick Organic Nurseries and an afternoon of Americana at the Naburn Station café.
