STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

DC COMICS V. TOWLE ______
DC COMICS v. TOWLE ________________________________________________________ Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, 2015 802 F.3d 1012 OPINION IKUTA, Circuit Judge: We are asked to decide whether defendant Mark Towle infringed DC Comics’ exclusive rights under a copyright when he built and sold replicas of the Batmobile, as it appeared in the 1966 television show Batman and the 1989 film BATMAN. Holy copyright law, Batman! I DC Comics (DC) is the publisher and copyright owner of comic books featuring the story of the world-famous character, Batman. Since his first comic book appearance in 1939, the Caped Crusader has protected Gotham City from villains with the help of his sidekick Robin the Boy Wonder, his utility belt, and of course, the Batmobile. Originally introduced in the Batman comic books in 1941, the Batmobile is a fictional, high-tech automobile that Batman employs as his primary mode of transportation. The Batmobile has varied in appearance over the years, but its name and key characteristics as Batman’s personal crime-fighting vehicle have remained consistent. Over the past eight decades, the comic books have continually depicted the Batmobile as possessing bat-like external features, ready to leap into action to assist Batman in his fight against Gotham’s most dangerous villains, and equipped with futuristic weaponry and technology that is “years ahead of anything else on wheels.” Since its creation in the comic books, the Batmobile has also been depicted in numerous television programs and motion pictures. Two of these depictions are relevant to this case: the 1966 television series Batman, starring Adam West, and the 1989 motion picture BATMAN, starring Michael Keaton. -

Superhero Origins As a Sentence Punctuation Exercise
Superhero Origins as a Sentence Punctuation Exercise The Definition of a Comic Book Superhero A comic book super hero is a costumed fictional character having superhuman/extraordinary skills and has great concern for right over wrong. He or she lives in the present and acts to benefit all mankind over the forces of evil. Some examples of comic book superheroes include: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and Plastic Man. Each has a characteristic costume which distinguishes them from everyday citizens. Likewise, all consistently exercise superhuman abilities for the safety and protection of society against the forces of evil. They ply their gifts in the present-contemporary environment in which they exist. The Sentence Punctuation Assignment From earliest childhood to old age, the comics have influenced reading. Whether the Sunday comic strips or editions of Disney’s works, comic book art and narratives have been a reading catalyst. Indeed, they have played a huge role in entertaining people of all ages. However, their vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall appropriateness as a reading resource is often in doubt. Though at times too “graphic” for youth or too “childish” for adults, their use as an educational resource has merit. Such is the case with the following exercise. Superheroes as a sentence punctuation learning toll. Among the most popular of comic book heroes is Superman. His origin and super-human feats have thrilled comic book readers, theater goers, and television watchers for decades. However, many other comic book superheroes exist. Select one from those superhero origin accounts which follow and compose a four paragraph superhero origin one page double-spaced narative of your selection. -

ABSTRACT Comics are an integral aspect of America's development and culture. The comics have chronicled historical milestones, determined fashion and shaped the way society viewed events and issues. They also offered entertainment and escape. The comics were particularly effective in providing heroes for Americans of all ages. One of those heroes -- or more accurately, superheroes -- is the Batman. A crime-fighting, masked avenger, the Batman was one of few comic characters that survived more than a half-century of changes in the country. Unlike his counterpart and rival -- Superman -- the Batman's popularity has been attributed to his embodiment of human qualities. Thus, as a hero, the Batman says something about the culture for which he is an ideal. The character's longevity and the alterations he endured offer a glimpse into the society that invoked the transformations. -
76052-1: Batman™ Classic TV Series – Batcave
76052-1: Batman™ Classic TV Series – Batcave By Jetro Pictures by Jetro and LEGO System A/S Batman is back in glorious 60s style and in a large 2526pc set that includes a total of 9 minifi gs. Is it a collectors item? A playset? Or is there too much nostalgia for either option? This review will (hopefully) give you the answer. Even though I wasn’t even around when the original Batman TV series aired in the 60s (January 1966 to March 1968), the iconic images of Batman and Robin chasing villains in loud colours, accompanied by large speech bubbles emphasising the power of their punches are still etched in my memory from the many reruns of this iconic show. As a result the 76052 Batman Classic TV Series Batcave is instantly recognisable, if only because of the classic lines of the Batmobile – they don’t make cars like that anymore. 72 Today’s Batman is a much darker knight, but even so, the colourful lines of the original TV series as represented in this set have an instant appeal, and not only those of us who saw the series on TV. I wanted to know if it was just my memories that drew me to the set (despite not being much of a super heroes fan, at least not when it comes to LEGO), so I sat down with my kids to build the set together and see what their reactions were. The instruction manual for this set is one hefty volume. On the one hand this has the important advantage that it is less likely to bend and deteriorate inside the box. -

FOR PUBLICATION UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE NINTH CIRCUIT DC COMICS, No. 13-55484 Plaintiff-Appellee, D.C. No. v. 2:11-cv-03934- RSWL-OP MARK TOWLE, an individual, DBA Garage Gotham, Defendant-Appellant. OPINION Appeal from the United States District Court for the Central District of California Ronald S.W. Lew, Senior District Judge, Presiding Argued and Submitted February 5, 2015—Pasadena, California Filed September 23, 2015 Before: Michael J. Melloy,* Jay S. Bybee, and Sandra S. Ikuta, Circuit Judges. Opinion by Judge Ikuta * The Honorable Michael J. Melloy, Senior Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, sitting by designation. 2 DC COMICS V. TOWLE SUMMARY** Copyright / Trademark The panel affirmed the district court’s summary judgment in a copyright and trademark infringement action brought by DC Comics against a maker of Batmobile replicas. The panel held that the Batmobile, as it appeared in the Batman comic books, television series, and motion picture, was entitled to copyright protection because this automotive character was a sufficiently distinctive element of the works. The panel held that DC Comics owned a copyright interest in the Batmobile character, as expressed in the 1966 television series and the 1989 motion picture, because it did not transfer its underlying rights to the character when it licensed rights to produce derivative works. The panel held that the defendant’s replica cars infringed on DC Comics’ copyrights. The panel affirmed the district court’s ruling that the defendant could not assert a laches defense to DC Comics’ trademark infringement claim because he willfully infringed DC’s trademarks. -

Math 181 Quiz 6 Fall 2013 Name Solutions • You have 15 minutes • No calculators 1. Batman dies leaving behind this property to Robin and Batgirl. The as- sets include the Wayne Manor, the Batcave, the Batmobile, the Batwing, and the Batboat. Assume the points are assigned as follows: Robin's Batgirl's Asset Points Points Wayne Manor(WM) 20 40 Batcave(BC) 30 20 Batmobile(BM) 30 28 Batwing(BW) 18 10 Batboat(BB) 2 2 Use the adjusted winner procedure to determine a fair allocation of the property. Answer: Wayne Manor(WM) 20 40 Batcave(BC) 30 20 Batmobile(BM) 30 28 Batwing(BW) 18 10 Batboat(BB) 2 2 Robin Points: 78 points Batgirl Points: 40 points So the Batboat goes to Batgirl Total points: Robin Points: 78 points Initial winner Batgirl Points: 42 points Initial loser Point Ratio: BC 30=20 = 1:5 BM 30=28 = 1:07143 BB 18=10 = 1:8 1 So the Batmobile is the first item to be transferred. It can be transferred completely without making Robin the initial loser, so the item must be shared. 78 − (30)x = 42 + (28)x 36 = 58x 36 18 x = = 58 29 Robins gets the Batcave, Batwing and (11/29) of the Batmobile. Batgirl gets the Wayne Manor, Batboat and (18/29) of the Batmobile. 2 2. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore inherit a house, a recording studio and a car from Dave. They submit the following bids. How should they arrive at a fair division?
