Written by vocalist Steven Tyler, this song became their first major hit and became a classic rock radio. Released in June 1973, it peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100, but hit big in the band's native Boston, where it was number one single of the year on WB-FM, number five for the year at WRKO and number 16 on WMEX (AM). The song also received immediate heavy airtime on the former WVBF (FM), often appearing in #1 positions on The Top Five At Five in June 1973. Album version of Dream On (4:28, unlike the 3:25 1973 45rpm edit, where much of the intro was edited and the first chorus replaced by the second chorus) was re-released in late 1975, debuted at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on January 10, 1976, breaking into the Top 40 on February 14 and peaking at number 6 on April 10. Columbia Records decided to serve the top 40 radio stations with both long and short versions of the song; Thus, many 1976 pop radio listeners were exposed to the group's first Top 10 effort through 45 edits. Von Dream On was first played live in Mansfield, Connecticut, at the Shaboo Inn. In a 2011 interview, Tyler recalled his father, a musician trained by Juilliard. He recalled lying under his father's piano as a three-year-old child listened to him play classical music. That's where I got that Dream On Chord, he said. Tyler says it was the only song on the band's first album where he used his real voice. He wasn't sure how his voice sounded on the tape, so for other songs, he tried to sing a little lower and sound more like soul performers such as James Brown. The song is also known for its building climax to showcase Tyler's screams. In Steven Davis's authorised memoir, Walk This Way, Tyler details the origins of the songs: Music for Dream On was originally written on Steinway's piano in the living room of Trow-Rico Lodge in Sunapi, perhaps four years before Aerosmith even began. I was seventeen or eighteen. ... It was just a little thing that I played and I never dreamed it would end up like a real song or anything. ... It's about dreams until your dreams come true. Writer(s): Steven Tyler This song was Aerosmith's first single. Until this single was released, Columbia Records wanted to quit the band because their first album was sold very poorly. The band's management contributed to the release of Dream On as a single with small changes to make it more radio friendly, and reached number 59 in the U.S. helping the band keep its deal.
