Written by vocalist Steven Tyler, this song became their first major hit and became a classic rock radio. Released in June 1973, it peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100, but hit big in the band's native Boston, where it was number one single of the year on WB-FM, number five for the year at WRKO and number 16 on WMEX (AM). The song also received immediate heavy airtime on the former WVBF (FM), often appearing in #1 positions on The Top Five At Five in June 1973. Album version of Dream On (4:28, unlike the 3:25 1973 45rpm edit, where much of the intro was edited and the first chorus replaced by the second chorus) was re-released in late 1975, debuted at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on January 10, 1976, breaking into the Top 40 on February 14 and peaking at number 6 on April 10. Columbia Records decided to serve the top 40 radio stations with both long and short versions of the song; Thus, many 1976 pop radio listeners were exposed to the group's first Top 10 effort through 45 edits. Von Dream On was first played live in Mansfield, Connecticut, at the Shaboo Inn. In a 2011 interview, Tyler recalled his father, a musician trained by Juilliard. He recalled lying under his father's piano as a three-year-old child listened to him play classical music. That's where I got that Dream On Chord, he said. Tyler says it was the only song on the band's first album where he used his real voice. He wasn't sure how his voice sounded on the tape, so for other songs, he tried to sing a little lower and sound more like soul performers such as James Brown. The song is also known for its building climax to showcase Tyler's screams. In Steven Davis's authorised memoir, Walk This Way, Tyler details the origins of the songs: Music for Dream On was originally written on Steinway's piano in the living room of Trow-Rico Lodge in Sunapi, perhaps four years before Aerosmith even began. I was seventeen or eighteen. ... It was just a little thing that I played and I never dreamed it would end up like a real song or anything. ... It's about dreams until your dreams come true. In August 2010, Tyler performed most of the song on the piano atop Green Monster at the Aerosmith concert at Fenway Park in Boston, before the rest of the band joined in to close the song. Everyone got their dues in life to pay yes, I know no one knows where it comes and where it goes, I know it's a sin of everyone you have to lose to know how to win half of my life in the books' written pages Live and learn from the fools and wise men you know that it's true All things come back to you singing with me, singing for a year singing for a laugh, singing for tears to sing with me, if it's only for today Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will hang you yes, sing with me, sing for a year to sing for laughter, sing for tears to sing with me, if it's only for today Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will hang you Dream on, dream, dream of a dream until your dream came true on, dream, dream of a dream until your dream came true Dream on, dream about, dream about, dream, dream, sing with me, sing for a year singing laughter, sing for tears to sing with me, if it is only on today May tomorrow, the good Lord will take you to sing with me, sing for a year to sing for laughter, sing for tears to sing with me, if it is only for today Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away featuring Louis Ferro, Jessica Darling, Rocco, BDog, Moupran to correct these texts. Writer(s): Steven Tyler This song was Aerosmith's first single. Until this single was released, Columbia Records wanted to quit the band because their first album was sold very poorly. The band's management contributed to the release of Dream On as a single with small changes to make it more radio friendly, and reached number 59 in the U.S. helping the band keep its deal.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Song_2017.09.19_01TASCAM Charlie Cobb: [00:41] So the recorders are on and the levels are okay. Okay. This is a fairly simple process here and informal. What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing.

  • Aerosmith Album Review About the Band
AEROSMITH ALBUM REVIEW ABOUT THE BAND Aerosmith is an old band that plays a variety of rock genres like heavy metal, hard rock and blues rock. They’re mostly known for their descriptive songs, some touch up on some questionable topics. Lyric wise, they don’t hide anything. Their songs have very suggestive lyrics and some innuendos here and there. They were super popular in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. Their attitude seems more relaxed and down to earth. Some of their songs are great inspiration. For example, there’s “Dream On”, their first big hit. Most of their songs are one that really get your feet tapping to the beat, but Dream On isn’t like that. If you like music that’s up beat and cool at the same time, Aerosmith is definitely a band you’d enjoy. MEMBERS • Steven Tyler – Creator of the band and lead vocalist. (Middle) • Joe Perry – Good friend of Steven Tyler and lead guitarist. (Mid-left) • Joey Kramer – Drums and percussion. (Right-most) • Brad Whitford – Backing guitarist. (Mid-right) • Tom Hamilton – Lead bass. (Left-most) ABOUT THE ALBUM • The album, there first one, is self titled. It’s most notable for “Dream On”, but the whole album is comprised of 8 songs, some of them outshined by others. Before the making of this album, Aerosmith mostly did gigs at clubs and high schools. But their first album was still seen by the music industry. They came in, and they came in with a good start. MAKE IT • The first track on this album, named “Make It” is a jumpy and just sounds like a hard rock song.
