(This year's honoree is Roger Penske, an automobile racing executive. Past honorees include Dick Thornburgh and Teresa Heinz) *Over the past few years, the Pennsylvania GOP has used part of the trip as a fundraiser, and hosted a lunch for Republicans who will be attending the evening's event. *Approximately 150 attendees are expected. *Enclosed talking points include a new anecdote which Senator Hatfield gave me. Rick Santorum - Bill Ryan, Delaware co. DA - Bob Monahan, Businessman & 1 88 Senate candidate o Because of the more moderate stance of the Republicans in power (such as National Committeewoman Elsie Hillman, Sen. Specter, and National Committeeman Herbert Barness) , the above candidates are not to their liking. Many think they are not electable. o One specific concern with the probable frontrunner, Santorum, is his position on abortion - he is pro-life. o There is a considerable effort to recruit a new candidate more to the GOPs liking. The rumor is that State Auditor and 1 90 Gubernatorial candidate Barbara Hafer is being courted away from the 1 94 Governor's race into the Senate race. o Rep. Santorum has continued to plug along, however, and does not seem the least bit worried that the GOP in PN has been making motions to recruit what they think would be a more viable candidate. Santorum is keeping his eye on the ball. o A poll to be released next week taken by the People for Heinz, shows Wofford' s reelection at 38% and the "new person" rate at 40%. Furthermore, Sen. Wofford trailed behind Mrs. Heinz at 40% to 45%. Sen. Wofford is considered very weak. o Sen. Wofford has received all sorts of visits by - Gore, Mrs. Clinton, and Mrs. Shalala. President Clinton is scheduled to attend Rep. Margolies-Mezvinsky's (CD-13) "entitlement conference" on December 13 -- the trade-off for her pro- Clinton budget vote. o The famous Carville and Begala team are running the Wofford show. Earl Baker - State Sen. Michael Fisher - Sam Katz, Municipal Financial expert - Ernie Preate, State Attorney General - Tom Ridge, U.S. Rep. (21) o The race for the Republican nomination seems to be between State AG Ernie Preate and Rep. Tom Ridge. o The PN GOP may nominate/endorse a candidate in February at their convention. o Rep. Ridge seems to have the advantage in money - over $1 million in account. o Preate has statewide name recognition. INQUIRER's Goldstein reports that "corporations, foundations and activist groups" invited to frosh Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky's (D) presidential entitlement conference -- a promise from Clinton in exchange for ner budget vote -- "have been asked to contribute to a $525,000 project run by Margolies- Mezvinsky's former campaign treasurer, Robert McCord. Included in the proposed budget for the two-year project are opinion polls, newsletters, advertising and follow-up mailings -- all in Margolies-Mezvinsky's 13th [CD] ..•. The fund-raising attempts and potential political use of the funds in Margolies-Mezvinsky's behalf have led some to question the value of the conference as a serious attempt to look at the issue of entitlements." Of 27 groups approached by McCord's Group, the Congressional Institute for the Future (CIF), 15 received a letter which promised a "high-profile" role to those who contributed $50,000. McCord: "I wasn't selling panel seats. Was I fund-raising aggressively? Yes" (12/8). Following the INQUIRER report, Clinton "altered the terms of his attendance." WH Comm. Dir. Mark Gearan: "Our arrangement is that none of the contributors will be on the panel in which the president is participating." Margolies-Mezvinsky, who denies the fund-raising appeals were an attempt "to sell access to the conference -- and thus to the president and many of his top aides," said she "did not consult" the WH about the details but believes someone from her staff or McCord did." Margolies-Mezvinsky: "I'm virtually certain they know. I would stake anything on it" (Devroy/Merida, w. POST, 12/9). Also slated to attend: HHS Sec. Donna Shalala, OMB Dir. Leon Panetta, and members of Congress, past and present (INQUIRER, 12/8).

  • Remembering Guy Molinari (1928-2018)
    REMEMBERING GUY MOLINARI (1928-2018) For most Americans, the Holiday Season that begins with Thanksgiving and culminates on New Year's Eve is a time of celebration, reflection, and remembrance. Many thousands of Americans, in the Counting of their Blessings this year, will give Thanks to having had a Public Servant who made a positive impact on their lives and livelihoods. That person is former Congressman Guy Molinari, who departed this life on July 25 at the age of 89. If there is one word that comes to mind by those who had the privilege of having known Guy Molinari, that word is “Courage.” Courage is what Molinari exhibited when he joined the Marine Corps as a young man. At a celebratory stop at a bar in, ironically, Washington, D. C., en route to Basic Training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Molinari led his fellow recruits to walk out of that bar in protest of a racist bartender who refused to serve one of the young men in Molinari's group who was African-American. Once in the Corps, Molinari, armed with a Law Degree, stood up to superior Officers Indifferent or Hostile towards Justice. In the frozen fields of South Korea Molinari thus established a personal template that would guide him through the rest of his extraordinary life; he would be a champion of those falsely accused of wrongdoing. Molinari returned from the Korean War to his beloved Staten Island in 1953. It was there he turned to the practice of real estate law. The rule of law was a principle by which Molinari was raised; his Grand-parents had immigrated to the U.

The event was organized by TMIA with assistance from several national safe-energy groups including NIRS, Public Citizen, Safe Energy Communications Council, Friends of the Earth, and Greenpeace. Over March 26 and 27 workshops were held dealing with nuclear waste issues, reactor decommis­ sioning, radiation monitoring, health effects, alternatives to nuclear power, the national nuclear policy, the proposed DOE energy budget (see below), reactor license renewal and safety deregula­ tion, the continuing TMI clean-up, and others designed to provide radioactivists with the skills neces­ sary to carry on the crusade for safe energy. Keynote speaker Ed Smeloff, the director of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), ex­ plained how SMUD closed the problem-plagued Rancho Seco reactor and how they now plan to make up for the power loss through aggressive energy conservation, efficiency, and renewable en­ ergy programs. Harrisburg's own Jane Perkins, now president of the Friends of the Earth, called for more grassroots activity across America with a focus on Washington, including a national safe-energy lobby day in Congress once or twice each year.

JT: I‟m sitting here with David Sweet, who represented the 48th District, a Democrat from Washington County, from 1977 to 1988. Thank you for being with me. DS: Well, thank you for having me. It‟s great to be able to memorialize some of the memories and the things that happened over the years while I was in the Legislature, and I‟m not sure, like many things, I‟m not sure anyone will ever view this or read it, but it‟s probably good to have it all on the record. It‟s great. JT: Absolutely, absolutely. What I‟d like to do is start out just by asking you some questions about your early life. DS: Sure. JT: Tell me about your childhood, where you grew up, your family, and some of your early education. 2 DS: Well, I grew up in Washington, Pennsylvania, which is a little town. It was about 20 thousand then – it‟s probably not much more than 12 or 13 thousand now –25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. JT: Okay. DS: And Washington – Little Washington to some people because people would drive through – Route 40 was the old national pike, and the interstate was actually built when I was a very small child that went around Washington, Pennsylvania, but many people knew of Washington, Pennsylvania, because they had to slog right through the main street of the town, as you did many towns before the interstate highway system, and it was Little Washington, but it was a good little town.

  • 1996 Row Office Elections
    1996 Row Office Elections May 2000 Pennsylvania elects relatively few statewide officials. Appellate court elections aside, only three state officials are elected other than the governor and lieutenant governor. These officials-- auditor general, attorney general, and treasurer--are important political as well as government leaders. Many of them use their statewide name recognition and influence to seek either a governorship or a U.S. Senate post. For example, then Auditor General Barbara Hafer ran for governor in 1990 against Bob Casey. Casey himself had served as auditor general before he was elected governor in 1986. Former State Treasurer Catherine Baker Knoll sought the governorship in 1994. In 1986, Auditor General Don Bailey ran for the U.S. Senate and lost in the Democratic primary. The elections for these “row offices” take place at the same time as the presidential elections. The term for each office is four years, and an incumbent is constitutionally limited to serving two terms. The auditor general ensures that public revenues are deposited and spent according to their legal purposes. In 1996, the office conducted approximately 6,500 audits of various state and local school district operations. The treasurer handles the revenues of the Commonwealth, deposits them in approved state depositories, invests some assets in short-term securities, and disburses Commonwealth funds to those properly entitled to receive them. The attorney general empanels grand juries, oversees criminal and civil prosecutions, and prosecutes consumer, public corruption, and drug cases.
