Long-Form Teacher’s Guide for Fight of the Century: Alice Paul Battles Woodrow Wilson for the Vote by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Sarah Green Book Synopsis When Woodrow Wilson was elected President, he didn't know that he would be participating in one of the greatest fights of the century: the battle for women's right to vote. The formidable Alice Paul was a leader in the women's suffrage movement and saw President Wilson's election as an opportunity to win the vote for women. She battered her opponent with endless strategic arguments and carefully coordinated protests, calling for a new amendment granting women the right to vote. With a spirit and determination that never quit--even when peaceful protests were met with violence and even when many women were thrown in jail--Paul eventually convinced President Wilson to support her cause, changing the country forever. Cleverly framed as a boxing match, this book provides a fascinating and compelling look at an important moment in American history. Historical Background Alice Paul was born on January 11, 1885 to Tracie and William Paul in New Jersey. Raised as a Quaker, she and her siblings learned the importance of equality and education, believing that women and men were equal and deserved equal rights in society. In the early 1900s, Alice attended the Universities of London and Birmingham and while there she joined the Women's Social and Political Union, a suffragette organization founded by Emmeline Pankhurst in 1903. (It is important to note that the term “suffragette” was only used in relation to the suffrage movement in England, while the term “suffragist” was used in relation to the movement in the United States). -

Lamb Center for Strategic Research Institute for National Strategic Studies National Defense University Institute for National Strategic Studies National Defense University The Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) is National Defense University’s (NDU’s) dedicated research arm. INSS includes the Center for Strategic Research, Center for Complex Operations, Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs, Center for Technology and National Security Policy, Center for Transatlantic Security Studies, and Conflict Records Research Center. The military and civilian analysts and staff who comprise INSS and its subcomponents execute their mission by conducting research and analysis, publishing, and participating in conferences, policy support, and outreach. What did the West do about them? This study answers these questions, explaining the Cold War strategies followed by the USSR, as well as the Western response. The full report contains eleven case studies, each one examining a counter-disinformation and counter-propaganda tactic in depth, with comments on the relevance of that tactic today. Here is a brief precis of each one of them. What Were Soviet Active Measures? The term “Active Measures’ came into use in the USSR in the 1950s to describe overt and covert techniques for influencing events and behaviour in foreign countries. Disinformation – the intentional dissemination of false information - is just one of many elements that made up active measures operations. Washington . £ In 1881, Booker T. Washington arrived in Alabama and started the Tuskegee Normal School for colored teachers £ He recruited the best and the brightest to come and teach here including George Washington Carver who arrived in 1896. £ Carver’s innovations in agriculture, especially with peanuts, expanded Tuskegee’s standing throughout the country. Atlanta Compromise Speech Washington gave a speech : an agreement struck in 1895 between African-American leaders and Southern white leaders £ Social Contract 1. Southern blacks would work meekly and submit to white political rule, while Southern whites guaranteed that blacks would receive basic education and due process in law (something that was supposed to enforced from the 14 th Amendment). -

Durrill Abstract Rehearsal for Redemption: The Politics of Post-Emancipation Violence in Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region By James Michael Rhyne In the late antebellum period, changing economic and social realities fostered conflicts among Kentuckians as tension built over a number of issues, especially the future of slavery. Local clashes matured into widespread, violent confrontations during the Civil War, as an ugly guerrilla war raged through much of the state. Additionally, African Americans engaged in a wartime contest over the meaning of freedom. Nowhere were these interconnected conflicts more clearly evidenced than in the Bluegrass Region. Though Kentucky had never seceded, the Freedmen’s Bureau established a branch in the Commonwealth after the war.
