San Antonio (71-67) at Corpus Christi (82-56) Thursday, September 6, 2018 • Whataburger Field • Corpus Christi, TX • 6:35 p.m. Texas League South Division Series, Game 2 (1-0 CC) ON THE RECORD: 47-23 Home | 35-33 Road | 24-11-5 Series | 10-4 Sweeps | W 2 Streak | 3-2 Last 5 | 5-5 Last 10 HARTMAN HARNESSES MISSIONS: Ryan Hartman held the Missions to three hits over 7 2/3 innings Wednesday night as the Hooks pushed past San Antonio, 7-0, before 5,106 fans in Game 1 of the Texas League South Division Series at Whataburger Field. Missions right-hander Michel Baez struck out five of the first eight men he faced. Corpus Christi broke through in the third. Back-to- back two-out singles by Ronnie Dawson and Stephen Wrenn put men on for Josh Rojas, who dropped a double down the left-field line for a 2-0 Hooks lead. Hartman seized the advantage by retiring 15 in a row from the end of the second to the start of the seventh.

In the sixth, Wrenn worked a lead-off walk and raced home on Josh Rojas’ double to left-center. Rojas crossed the pay station when Taylor Jones stroked a single up the middle. Corpus Christi turned a four-run edge into a 7-0 lead in the seventh. Consecutive walks by Ronald Bolanos started the inning. Wrenn lined a single into right, driving in de Oleo from second base. Dawson and Wrenn scored on the play thanks to a pair of errors, including a throw by Bolanos that struck Dawson in the face as he past the plate, forcing his exit from the game. Brandon Bielak retired four of the five men he faced in relief to nail down the victory.

SETTING THE TONE: LHP Ryan Hartman, who struck out 7 against 3 hits over 7 2/3 innings, turned in the longest postsea- son outing in club history last night. Hartman’s effort paved the way toward Corpus Christi’s 3rd shutout win all-time in the post- season. Wednesday’s 4-hitter marked the 2nd-fewest knocks allowed by the Hooks in a playoff bout. Juan Gutierrez, Chad Reineke, and Paul Estrada combined to yield just 2 hits in Game 1 of the 2006 Texas League Division Series vs. Midland. Cor- pus Christi won, 2-0, thanks to a 2-out, 2-run triple off the bat of shortstop Osvaldo Fernando in the 4th.

SHUTTING DOWN SA: Hooks hurlers have held the Missions to 1 run over the last 3 games. During this run, Corpus Christi’s pitching staff has struck out 23 against 14 hits (all singles) and 5 walks.

BREAKING OUT: After batting only .222 during the month of August, Corpus Christi managed to score 8 runs twice in the 3- game set at San Antonio. The Hooks followed up by scoring 7 times last night. In the past 6 contests, Corpus Christi is hit- ting .293 (58x198) while averaging 5.3 runs per night. The Hooks were held to a single marker over a span of 28 innings Au- gust 27-29.

TRIPLE THREAT: LHP Ryan Hartman tied for the league lead in wins (11) and paced the circuit in ERA (2.69) and strikeouts (143), becoming the fourth pitcher to win the Triple Crown in Texas League history. Lefty Sid Fernandez of San Antonio was the first to accomplish the feat in 1983. Shreveport’s George Ferran was the second in 1986 and Samuel Deduno of Tulsa turned the trick in 2009.

Hartman joins David Martinez (2.02, 2013), Douglas Arguello (2.55, 2010), and Matt Albers (2.17) as Hooks hurlers who won the Texas League ERA title. Nick Tropeano (130, 2013) and Jason Hirsh (165) are the only Corpus Christi pitchers to finish with the most strikeouts in the circuit.

Including last night’s performance, Hartman has held the opposition to 2 ER or less in 22 of 26 assignments.

LUXURIOUS AT THE TOP: The Hooks finished 2018 at 82-56 (.594), which stands as the best record among the 30 Double-A clubs. Corpus Christi legged out Tulsa (74-65) by 8.5 games in the overall standings. The Hooks have finished the season with the top Texas League record in 5 of the last 7 campaigns. By claiming the regular-season finale, the 2018 squad has notched the 3rd-best mark in team history.

2015: 89-51 (.636) 2016: 85-55 (.607) 2018: 82-56 (.594) 2013: 83-57 (.593)

SECOND HALF CHAMPS!: For the 2nd time in the club’s 14-year history, the Hooks have swept both halves in the Texas League South Division. The 2013 club went 83-57 to win both halves.

ONE FINAL MISSION: Thanks to a 12-3 record at Whataburger Field, Corpus Christi won 18 of the 29 meetings with its I-37 rival in 2018. Corpus Christi has managed only 6 wins in 14 games at the Wolff this year. Four of those victories were notched in a sweep June 17-20, which handed the Hooks a first-half title.

This is the final Double-A season for the Missions, who will move to the Pacific Coast League in 2019. San Antonio has been a member of the Texas League since the circuit was founded in 1888. The Missions are 202-190 against Corpus Christi over the past 14 campaigns. The Hooks’ inaugural game was played at The Wolff on April 7, 2005. San Antonio won, 3-2, beginning what was a 4-game sweep.
