Sword-billed Hummingbird 10. White-capped Dipper Tour Summary This was one again a fantastic trip across the length and breadth of the world’s birdiest nation. Highlights were many and included everything from the flashy Fiery Topazes and Guianan Cock-of- the-Rocks of the Mitu lowlands to the spectacular Rainbow-bearded Thornbills and Buffy Helmetcrests of the windswept highlands. In between, we visited just about every type of habitat that it is possible to bird in Colombia and shared many special moments: the diminutive Lanceolated Monklet that perched above us as we sheltered from the rain at the Piha Reserve, the showy Ochre-breasted Antpitta we stumbled across at an antswarm at Las Tangaras Reserve, the Ocellated Tapaculo (voted bird of the trip) that paraded in front of us at Rio Blanco, and the male Vermilion Cardinal, in all his crimson glory, that we enjoyed in the Guajira desert on the final morning of the trip. If you like seeing lots of birds, lots of specialities, lots of endemics and enjoy birding in some of the most stunning scenery on earth, then this trip is pretty unbeatable. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract A new genus, Nephelomyias, is erected for three species of Andean tyrant flycatchers (Aves: Passeriformes: Tyrannidae) traditionally placed in the genus Myiophobus. An extensive study based on molecular data has shown that they form a well supported clade that is not closely related to other Myiophobus species. Instead, they form a small independent lineage in Tyrannidae, together with Pyrrhomyias, Hirundinea and Myiotriccus. Key words: Nephelomyias lintoni, Nephelomyias ochraceiventris, Nephelomyias pulcher, Tyrannidae, taxonomy, phylogeny Introduction Recent phylogenetic studies, based on extensive molecular data (e.g. Ohlson et al. 2008; Tello et al. 2009), have greatly improved our knowledge of the relationships and evolution of the tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae). Several unexpected relationships have been revealed and a number of traditional genera have proven to be non-monophyletic, prompting taxonomic rearrangements. Here we erect a new generic name for three species traditionally placed in the genus Myiophobus, which were found by Ohlson et al. -

Some new information on the distribution of Venezuelan birds Peter Boesman Como resultado de la observación de aves en el campo durante los ultimos 10 años, se presenta un resumen de nuevos datos de distribución de aves en Venezuela. Los datos están organizados por area (20 en total), la mayoria de las areas son poco conocidas. Las observaciones de mayor importancia se detallan en ‘appendix 1’. En Falcón, la Serranía de San Luis tiene muchas más especies tipicas de las alturas sub-tropicales de la Cordillera de la Costa que previamente conocido, las serranias en el noreste de Falcón, de alturas bajas, tienen una avifauna abundante de especies de selva tropical, y areas de agua dulce en esta misma parte de Falcón y el norte de Carabobo son un refugio para muchas especies acuaticas poco conocidas. Los Andes en Lara y Trujillo no han sido estudiados tan profundamente como en Mérida, y por consecuencia se han descubierto importantes extensiones en la distribución de varias especies. En Mérida, se documenta indicaciones de una ruta migratoria muy importante a través del Valle del Río Santo Domingo. Las alturas bajas del Parque Nacional Tamá en Táchira (en el valle de los ríos Frio y Negro) y las areas adjacentes en Apure merecen mayor investigación en vista de algunas observaciones sorprendentes. Igualmente, los descubrimientos en islas del Río Orinoco fueron inesperados. La selva del Río Caura en el norte de Bolívar alberga especies previamente conocidas solamente del estado de Amazonas, y la región del Río Grande en el noreste de Bolívar tiene una avifauna tipicamente Guyanesa. -

Morphological and Ecological Evolution in Old and New World Flycatchers (215pp.) Director of Dissertation: Donald B. Miles In both the Old and New Worlds, independent clades of sit-and-wait insectivorous birds have evolved. These independent radiations provide an excellent opportunity to test for convergent relationships between morphology and ecology at different ecological and phylogenetic levels. First, I test whether there is a significant adaptive relationship between ecology and morphology in North American and Southern African flycatcher communities. Second, using morphological traits and observations on foraging behavior, I test whether ecomorphological relationships are dependent upon locality. Third, using multivariate discrimination and cluster analysis on a morphological data set of five flycatcher clades, I address whether there is broad scale ecomorphological convergence among flycatcher clades and if morphology predicts a course measure of habitat preference. Finally, I test whether there is a common morphological axis of diversification and whether relative age of origin corresponds to the morphological variation exhibited by elaenia and tody-tyrant lineages. -

VENEZUELA La Escalera and the western areas May 29 – June 11, 2005 By RON HOFF Clinton, Tennessee USA My wife, Dollyann Myers, and I joined our friends Frank Bills and his wife Sharon Bostick for a 2 week trip to Venezuela. Frank had contracted with Venezuelan guide David Ascanio ([email protected]) to guide us for this trip. David is a well known native Venezuela guide and guides regularly for Victor Emanuel Nature Tours and other tour companies, as well as private groups. We all found David to be one of the best guides we have ever used, anywhere. His knowledge of Venezuelan birds, their calls, and their habitats is unbelievable. On top of that he is a great guy with a superb sense of humor. We had a fantastic time with him and highly recommend him to anyone going to Venezuela or nearby countries. He has his own web site at www.ascaniobirding.com. Our trip was oriented around trying to find as many endemics as we could, but not necessarily as many species as we could. This worked out fine for us and in the end I saw 413 species and heard another 36. This included 20 endemics. Clements’ list says there are 45 endemics in Venezuela, so this adds up to about 44% of Venezuela’s endemics. Adding in what others saw and heard but I didn’t, we finished up with nearly 500 species anyway. Pretty awesome for just 2 weeks! I’ll write up the daily accounts, highlighting most of the new species for the day (but not necessarily the common birds like Tropical Kingbird, etc.), and then I’ll give the overall species list at the end of this report. -

Colombia Mega I Trip Report 17th January to 15th February 2016 Mottled Owl by Trevor Ellery Trip report by tour leader: Trevor Ellery RBT Trip Report Tour Name & Number 20YY 2 Tour Summary Introduction. Although we fell well short of the hoped for 1000 total, recording 917 species, we did most importantly have a wonderful birding adventure, quite literally across the length and breadth of Colombia. From the high Paramos of the eastern Andes to the sweltering jungles of Mitu and from the arid semi-desert of the Guajira peninsula to the humid cloud forest covered slopes of the western Andes, it was quite a ride. We managed to record a huge number of endemics and specialties and simply a wealth of great birds with everything from the bold and flashy such as Guianan-cock-of-the-Rock, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow and Northern Screamer – to the small and Spotted Puffbird by Trevor Ellery dainty such as Tody Motmot, Rusty-breasted Antpitta and Booted Rackettail. Everywhere we went there were birds – and often lots of them. Combine that with some wonderful scenery and some wonderful mammal experiences, which included a soaking wet Brown-throated Sloth at Paujil, a wonderful troop of Venezuelan Red Howlers in the Santa Marta foothills and a Spiny-Speckled Tree Rat facing off with a large Boa on the Caribbean coast and you have the perfect recipe for what turned out to be a sensational trip. Day 1: Chingaza NP and Siecha Gravel Pits. We started with an early morning, birding the windswept Paramos above Bogota. Despite the biting winds we were soon picking up a nice selection of high Andean birds including fine views of Plushcap, Plumbeous Sierra Finch and Pale-naped Brush Finch. -

El desarrollo de la imprenta y su evolución ha permitido que los trabajos científicos junto con ilustraciones científicas cumplan su cometido a lo largo de la historia, lo cual ha sido determinante en el desarrollo de la ornitología como ciencia en el mundo. En Colombia, la ilustración ornitológica – científica también ha sido relevante para el desarrollo de la ornitología en el país. Since ancient times illustration has offered us a vision of birds in culture, as support for morphological descriptions, behavior, discovery of new species and bird classifications, up to birding guides and a wealth of artistic works of great value in themselves.
