Washburn Center Awards & Articles 2010-2015 Awards Washburn Center for Children has strengthened the Twin Cities community since 1883. Popovich Award Presented by Anna Pratt MN SPJ Board Member Presented to Paul McEnroe President's Award Presented by Jonathan Kealing MN SPJ Chapter President Keynote Jonathan Capehart Journalist and Editorial Board Member Washington Post Page One Awards Presented Jana Shortal KARE 11 Student Scholarship Award Winners Each year, the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists board of directors selects two college students studying in the field of journalism to receive its annual student scholarship. This year, MNSPJ is pleased to award two $2,000 scholarships. The funds for the scholarship are generated, in part, through your purchases at the Page One Awards Silent Auction. In addition, the board traditionally directs a portion of the local membership dues to fund the scholarships. The scholarship application process is highly competitive, and applicants must either be enrolled in a post-secondary institution in Minnesota or be a Minnesota high school graduate enrolled in a post-secondary institution outside of Minnesota. Jacob Belgum, of Atwater, Minn., is a junior at Augustana University, where he is studying journalism and accounting. After years reporting and editing for the campus paper, Belgum is set to become the editor-in-chief of the Augustana Mirror next year.

She reports for Anderson Cooper 360° and regularly anchors and reports for CNN’s Documentary Unit. Since joining the network in December 2004, she has covered breaking news in addition to providing in-depth investigative reports for Anderson Cooper 360°. In 2013, Kaye covered the Presidential Inauguration and anchored from Washington D.C. She also reported and hosted CNN doc- umentaries on the LAPD manhunt for Christopher Dorner, the Jodi Arias Trial, and the Boston Marathon Bombing. In 2012, she covered the shoot- ing massacre inside Theatre 9 in Aurora, Colo, as well as the attack on the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wis.

    DECADE OF DISCONSOLATION By Tom St. Martin INTRODUCTION An estimated 500 farmers, some armed, stormed the business district of England, Arkansas demanding food and threatening to take it forcefully. The business community appealed to the American Red Cross which responded by authorizing $2.75 for each of the families involved. The farmers came from a rich agricultural region ravaged by drought. Army engineers reported that the Mississippi River was an extremely low stage. Water in the Mississippi River is at a lower level that at any time in the last seventy years. More than 3,000 firefighters are now in the northern Minnesota woods area. Parched soil and dried out underbrush have created a fire hazard in every northern county according to A. F. Oppel, deputy state forester. Hundreds of small blazes reported. A thin pall of smoke hangs over the entire northern portion of the state. There is an impending threat of a roaring inferno. Dust borne on northwest winds of high velocity shrouded the sun in Minnesota in neighboring states . It was the worst storm of its kind in recent years. It turned day into dusk and halted vehicular traffic. Office buildings and homes could not hold the dust out. Grasshoppers, tiny but vigorous and with ravenous appetites invaded grain fields in the Argyle locality in great numbers and with a suddenness that caught the grasshopper fighting organizations unprepared. The drought has held back growth of vegetation in the hatching grounds and the hungry grasshoppers have moved into the fields and are devastating tender grass, leaving no signs of growth behind.
