GOVERNMENT OF INDIA YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:3089 ANSWERED ON:13.12.2006 NATIONAL SPORTS DEVELOPMENT FUNDS Sikdar Smt. Joytirmoyee Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state: (a) The amount of funds allocated to States and Institutions from the National Sports Development Funds during the last three years and the current financial year till date alongwith the details of the schemes covered therein, State-wise and Institution-wise; (b)The details of the fund utilization, State-wise and Institution-wise; (c) Whether the Union Government has undertaken any review of the schemes; and (d) If so, the extent to which the funds have achieved the objectives for which it was set up? Answer THE MINISTER OF PANCHYATI RAJ, YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS AND DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH EASTERN REGION (SHRI MANI SHANKAR AIYAR) (a)&(b): No amount has been allocated to any State from the National Sports Development Fund during the last three years as well as the current financial year till date. As far as Institutions are concerned, an amount of Rs. 6,03,439/- was released to the Rural Development Foundation, Hyderabad from the Fund for purchase of Archery equipment during 2005-06. (c)&(d) : Assistance through the Fund has mainly been given to promising sportspersons to enhance their performance and medal winning prospects in international events. Most of the sportspersons assisted from the Fund, such as Lt. Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore, Shri Abhinav Bindra, Shri Manavjit Singh Sandhu, all shooters, Shri Parimanjan Negi (Chess) and Ms. Anju Bobby George (athletics), have given commendable performance in international events. This indicates that the objectives of NSDF towards promotion of sports excellence is being facilitated. However, the Scheme will be comprehensively reviewed as a part of the ongoing exercises for formulation of the Eleventh Five Year Plan. .

Games And Sports : A Gateway Of Women’s Empowerment In India Dr. Krishnendu Pradhan ABSTRACT “Sport has huge potential to empower women and girls” - Remarks by Lakshmi Puri; UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women Deputy Executive Director. The purpose of this paper attempts to shed light the status of women’s empowerment in India through games and sports and highlights the issues and challenges of women empowerment in the field of physical education and sports. Sport is an integral part of the culture of almost every nation. However, its use to promote gender equity and empower girls and women is often overlooked because sport is not universally perceived as a suitable or desirable pursuit for girls and women. Today the empowerment of women in games and sports has become one of the most important concerns of 21st century. But practically women empowerment in games and sports is still an illusion of reality. It is observe in our day to day life how women become victimized by various social evils. Women empowerment is the vital instrument to expand women’s ability to have resources and to make strategic life choices. Empowerment of women in games and sports is essentially the process of upliftment of economic, social and political status of women, the traditionally underprivileged ones, in the society. Today sports and physical activity as a strategy for the empowerment of girls and women has been gaining recognition worldwide. Women could be empowered through education, sports and physical activities and by giving them equal opportunities in different walks of life. Research on sport, gender, and development indicates that sport can benefit girls and women by: Enhancing health and well-being, fostering self-esteem and empowerment, facilitating social inclusion and integration, challenging gender norms and providing opportunities for leadership and achievement.

Sumariwalla was elected President for his third term while Anju Bobby George, India’s only medallist in the World Athletics Championships, was elected as Senior Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India at its annual general meeting held at Hyatt Regency in Gurugram on October 31-November 1, 2020. Ravinder Chaudhary and Madhukant Pathak were elected Secretary and Treasurer respectively. All the candidates were elected unopposed. Anju Bobby George expressed delight at the increasing number of women in the Executive Council and said she is looking forward to serving the sport in her new capacity. Besides the 2003 World Championship long jump bronze medal winner, former long-distance runner Suman Rawat Mehta (Vice President), former middle-distance runner C Latha (Joint Secretary) and A Hyma (Executive Council member) were the other women who were elected to the Executive Council for the four-year term. Anju said, “It is the right time for her to take up a leadership position in AFI. “I have taken up other roles before this.
