Today the university has grown to a gigantic size with great honour and credibility. The university today has 348 colleges, 35 departments and over three lakhs students. Although we have completed 43 years in our history, we could not establish a Sports Complex with synthetic stadium, aquatic complex, multi-purpose indoor stadium, dormitory for players, cricket stadium, vellodrome with hockey filed, football field etc. The University has allotted 20ha of land for this purpose in the campus. The present Syndicate of University, after detailed discussions arranged to prepare an elegant plan and estimate for the establishment of a Green Sports Complex. The total financial outlay of this Complex is around Rs.93 cores. When completed, the Green Sports Complex will remain as a unique and one of the best sports facilities of Asia. Let me request your earnest support and cooperation to complete this task so as to benefit the same to the Sports Community of the nation as well as to three lakhs students of this University. Calicut University Dr. M. Abdul Salam 28-02-2012 Vice Chancellor proposal for green sports complex UNIVERSITY OF CALICUT Bird’s eye view (259 Hectares of land) 6 | university of calicut The University The University of Calicut was established in the year 1968 as the second of its kind in Kerala with a vision of promoting higher education and research in the educationally backward area of Malabar, comprising the central and northern districts of Kerala. It is the largest University in the state and also one of the largest in the country, with about 338 affiliated colleges and about 3.5 lakhs students in these colleges. It also has 35 teaching and research departments on the campus. The main campus spreads over 536 acres of land in possession. Besides, the University has 7 off-campus centers in the Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Wayanad districts. Since its inception, the university has been acting as a catalyst to provide the much needed guidance and quality control to meet the aspirations of the people in general and the dreams of the backward community of the Malabar area. The beautiful campus with its serene atmosphere is spread on both sides of the National Highway NH 17, in the Thenjippalam area, located at 23 kms to south of Kozhikode city. It is only 8 kms away from the Kozhikode airport. The University campus is rich in terms of the academic ambience and sports culture and has the potential to emerge as a world class University in the area. The University is a state government run University and is run by the generous support it receives from the state government and the Central government through the various funding agencies such as the UGC. In addition to the conventional disciplines in humanities and sciences, the University has recently taken several steps to promote research in advanced interdisciplinary areas such as Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, and Stem Cell research. Although the University has tremendous potential for growth, in an era of modernization of science, and educational concepts, there is a need for major infrastructural reforms to fulfill the academic goals of the University. The University plans to cross such hurdles during the XII Plan period to emerge as one of the most rated University in terms of student intake, academic quality, research and consultancy, examination reforms, good and effective governance, cultural activities, and sports and games. proposal for green sports complex Former Students of the University Padmasree Olympian Dr. P.T. Games And Sports : A Gateway Of Women’s Empowerment In India Dr. Krishnendu Pradhan ABSTRACT “Sport has huge potential to empower women and girls” - Remarks by Lakshmi Puri; UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women Deputy Executive Director. The purpose of this paper attempts to shed light the status of women’s empowerment in India through games and sports and highlights the issues and challenges of women empowerment in the field of physical education and sports. Sport is an integral part of the culture of almost every nation. However, its use to promote gender equity and empower girls and women is often overlooked because sport is not universally perceived as a suitable or desirable pursuit for girls and women. Today the empowerment of women in games and sports has become one of the most important concerns of 21st century. But practically women empowerment in games and sports is still an illusion of reality. It is observe in our day to day life how women become victimized by various social evils. Women empowerment is the vital instrument to expand women’s ability to have resources and to make strategic life choices. Empowerment of women in games and sports is essentially the process of upliftment of economic, social and political status of women, the traditionally underprivileged ones, in the society. Today sports and physical activity as a strategy for the empowerment of girls and women has been gaining recognition worldwide. Women could be empowered through education, sports and physical activities and by giving them equal opportunities in different walks of life. Research on sport, gender, and development indicates that sport can benefit girls and women by: Enhancing health and well-being, fostering self-esteem and empowerment, facilitating social inclusion and integration, challenging gender norms and providing opportunities for leadership and achievement.
