R. G. do Sul) (Com 1 Est.) O presente trabalho teve por origem a necessidade de determi nar a espécie dos caracóis coletados para execícios práticos de fi siologia comparada. Os caracteres dos animais do nosso material coincidem em grande parte com os de Strophocheilus oblongus mus- culus Becquaert, 1948, subespécie até agora somente citada para a Argentina e Paraguai. Para o nosso estudo seguimos a monografia elaborada por Bec quaert (1948) sôbre a revisão da família Strophocheilidae. Dela nos servimos também para a discussão e comentários. Grande auxílio nos prestou a excelente coleção malacológica existente no Departamento de Zoologia da Secretaria de Agricultura de São Paulo, estudada pelo próprio Becquaert. Agradecemos ao Dr. Celso Paulo Jaeger o fornecimento de vários caracóis; ao Dr. Lindolpho Guimarães e ao Lic. PETER SEN GÊNERO STROPHOCHEILUS SPIX, 1827 Caracteres da concha: tamanho médio a muito grande (20 a 160 mm de comprimento), grande capacidade, oblonga-ovalada, elíptica ou em forma de fuso, relativamente larga em relação ao comprimento, sendo porém êste sempre maior do que a largura, com uma volta do corpo bastante desenvolvida, e com um ápice obtuso arredondado. -

These species are designated by the International Union for Conservation of the Nature – IUCN as follows: seven as "Vulnerable", six "In Danger" and six “Without Category Established”. The general regional threats that these species are subjected to are briefly analyzed. The malacological collection of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, curated by Dr. Carla B. Kotzian, has been recently donated to the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP, Brazil). The collection is rich in well preserved specimens of terrestrial gastropods from central Rio Grande do Sul state, in southernmost Brazil. That region, centered in the municipality of Santa Maria, represents a transitional area between the Atlantic Rainforest and Pampas biomes and has been scarcely reported in the literature. Therefore, we present a taxonomical study of these specimens, complemented by historical material of the MZSP collection. Overall, we report 20 species, mostly belonging to the Stylommatophora, from which four represent new records for Rio Grande do Sul: Adelopoma brasiliense, Happia vitrina, Macrodontes gargantua, and Cyclodontina corderoi. The present report of C. corderoi is also the first from Brazil. Two introduced species were found in the studied material: Bradybaena similaris and Zonitoides sp. Key-Words. ABSTRACT This systematic review synthesizes our updated knowledge of 33 species and subspecies of Stylomatophoran gastropods, which belong to the genera Gastrocopta, Succinea, Radiodiscus, Retidiscus, Rotadiscus, Cecilioides, Austroborus, Megalobulimus, Bulimulus, Discoleus, Naesiotus, Plagiodontes, Spixia, Scolodonta, Miradiscops and Epiphragmophora. We provide published and unpublished records of the terrestrial molluscan taxa and a critical review, including data from the most important collections deposited in institutions from Argentina and abroad. All the taxa described have modern representatives; only two, Succinea rosariensis and Scolodonta argentina, still require confirmation regarding their taxonomic validity. The genera with confirmed older than Quaternary records are Austroborus, Megalobulimus, Radiodiscus, Rotadiscus and Succinea, which occur since the Paleoge- ne. Regarding the modern geographical distribution, well known records involve part of Argentina (Subtropical and Pampean Dominia of the Guayanian-Brazilian Subregion and the Central Dominion of the Andean Subre- gion, both in the Neotropical Region). -

Dixon, Assistant Director, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry Greg Hodges, [email protected], Bureau Chief - Entomology, Nematology and Plant Pathology, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry INTRODUCTION: Two agricultural pest snails, the giant African land snail (Achatina fulica) (Bowditch) (Fig. 1) and the giant South American snails (Megalobulimus spp. and relatives) (Fig. 2), are presently not established in Florida or the Continental US. These snails are of regulatory significance and are not allowed to be possessed or sold within Florida, even though both are popular as pets. Both of these large snails are known to feed on many varieties of plants, in some cases causing serious damage. Any very large snail will draw attention and may be considered exotic and possibly invasive. Yet, there are native snails which are similar in appearance and occasionally reach large size (up to 3 inches in length). Immature snails or smaller specimens of these exotic snails can be easily confused with native species that are protected by state and federal laws. The following information will assist in the field recognition of these pest snails, support state and federal regulatory efforts to prevent establishment of the snails in Florida, and help protect our native snails by preventing unnecessary collection and destruction. -

Apartado 14-0434, Lima- 14, Perú. Megalobulimus (Strophocheilidae) y Systrophia (Scolodontidae). Se utilizaron individuos colectados en diversas 2 Laboratorio de Sistemática Mole- localidades de la Amazonia peruana así como información bibliográfica. Se utilizaron los marcadores molecu- cular y Filogeografía, Facultad de lares 5.8S-ITS2-28S rRNA y 16S rRNA para reconstruir filogenias y obtener hipótesis sobre las relaciones Ciencias Biológicas, Universidad evolutivas entre los géneros amazónicos y otras especies de distribución global. La filogenia nuclear permitió Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Av. Venezuela s/n, Lima-1, Perú. determinar la posición evolutiva de ambos géneros y la filogenia mitocondrial permitió la diferenciación de las especies a nivel intragenérico. Megalobulimus formó parte del clado no-achatinoideo en la filogenia de 3 Laboratorio de Microbiología Molecular y Biotecnología, Facultad los gastrópodos Stylommatophora, como lo esperado, pero no pudo ser demostrada su cercanía a la familia de Ciencias Biológicas, Universidad Acavidae, mientras que Systrophia quedó fuera de los dos clados establecidos, formando uno basal dentro Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. -

Editor “Silent Summer”*, an important review of the state of wildlife in Britain and Ireland published in May this year, includes chapters reporting on the status of specific groups (e.g. “Land and freshwater molluscs” by Ian Killeen) where the increasing impact of introduced species is a particular emphasis. In April I noticed for the first time an adult specimen of Hygromia cinctella in my Bedfordshire garden. This was the first record locally of this introduced species, despite our previous hard winter in the U.K. It’s not surprising that there are several articles in this magazine which relate to the discovery of alien species from both marine and non-marine environments. It is always satisfying to be able to include aids to identification in the magazine and I would highly recommend Ben Rowson’s image of upper shore crevice fauna, included on page 17 as part of the Marine Recorder’s report. Once again, thanks are due to all who have sent in interesting contributions. I continue to value input on a wide range of subjects from members in the UK and Ireland and internationally, as this adds an essential wider context and interest.
