YOUNG Szib~nittedfor publicatio?~drine 15, 1950 TI-IE once numerous tropical hardwood hamrnocks in the region of Miami, Florida, are rapidly being enveloped or destroyed by the grow- ing mctropolitan and suburban area. With the destruction of these hammocks the colonies of tree snails, Liguus fasciatus, characteristic of this type of vegetational association are doomed to extinction. Many colonies are complctely lost; others are on the verge of extinc- tion and mnst surely disappear in a few more years. In view of this prospect, I believe that the followiilg notes on the location of the ham- mocBs and thcir associated colonies of Ligzcus will be of value to future workers studying the distribution, ecology, or genetics of this group of snails. Thc tree snails of the genus Liguus are colonial only because they are strictly limited to the subtropical jungle-hammocli associes and to subtropical hammock associes with the corresponding clirnax associa- tions of the Florida Keys and the souther11 mainland (see Davis, 1943). Clench and Fairchild (1939) have reviewed the taxonomy of the Florida forms, and the names used in the present paper are largely based 011 their worlr. Santiago de Cuba, Cuba RESUMEN Fueron revisadas las colecciones malacológicas históricas “Cleto Sánchez Falcón” y “M. L. Jaume”, depositadas en el Museo de Historia Natural “Tomás Romay” y el Museo “Jorge Ramón Cuevas”. De ambas colecciones se copiaron los datos de etiqueta del material tipo. La validez de la información de etiqueta para cada lote fue revisada con las descripciones originales correspondientes a cada especie, revisiones taxonómicas de familias y catálogos actualizados. Se registraron 434 ejemplares, incluidos en 56 subespecies, 34 especies y seis (6) familias; estos se corresponden con 85 localidades y 16 colectores. La colección “Cleto Sánchez Falcón” posee 368 ejemplares de las familias Annulariidae, Cerionidae, Megalomastomidae, Helicinidae, Orthalicidae y Urocoptidae, siendo esta última la más representada. La colección “M. L. Jaume” tiene 66 ejemplares de 36 subespecies de Liguus fasciatus (Müller), Orthalicidae. Palabras clave: moluscos terrestres, material tipo, colección histórica, Cuba. ABSTRACT The historic malacological collections “Cleto Sánchez Falcón” and “M. L. Jaume” housed in the Museo de Historia Natural “Tomás Romay” and Museo “Jorge Ramón Cuevas” were revised, and the label data of type material was copied. The validity of the information on labels for each lot was revised with the original descriptions for all species, taxonomic revisions of families and updated catalogues. -

R. G. do Sul) (Com 1 Est.) O presente trabalho teve por origem a necessidade de determi nar a espécie dos caracóis coletados para execícios práticos de fi siologia comparada. Os caracteres dos animais do nosso material coincidem em grande parte com os de Strophocheilus oblongus mus- culus Becquaert, 1948, subespécie até agora somente citada para a Argentina e Paraguai. Para o nosso estudo seguimos a monografia elaborada por Bec quaert (1948) sôbre a revisão da família Strophocheilidae. Dela nos servimos também para a discussão e comentários. Grande auxílio nos prestou a excelente coleção malacológica existente no Departamento de Zoologia da Secretaria de Agricultura de São Paulo, estudada pelo próprio Becquaert. Biological Background This section describes the biological background for this species and provides context for the following sections. It focuses on the habitats that support the Florida tree snail, and the threats faced by the species. Florida tree snails (Liguus fasciatus) have historically been found in Collier, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties (Deisler-Seno 1994). Currently the species is primarily known from Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Collier counties (Emmel and Cotter 1995; see range map). The Florida tree snail has a conical shell 40 to 70 mm (1.6 to 2.7 in) in length. The shell color is extremely variable and can be matte or glossy (Pilsbry 1946). There are 58 named color morphs of the Florida tree snail (Jones et al. 1981, Roth and Bogan 1984, Emmel and Cotter 1995; Figure 1). Research shows very low genetic variation and suggests that all color morphs belong to a single species, Liguus fasciatus (Hillis 1995). -

This project arises from almost all members of this species having been brought into captivity due to their displacement in the wild by an opencast coalmine. Powelliphanta (F: Rhytididae) is a genus of endemic carnivorous snails, which includes 10 species, 27 subspecies and numerous undescribed taxa. As well as its diversity, Powelliphanta is renowned for the large size of its members (up to 90mm diameter) and their attractively-patterned shells. Most taxa are threatened due to habitat loss and predation by introduced mammalian predators. The study commences with a literature review to refine husbandry methods and to assess requirements for captive breeding of snails. From this review investigations are made into stocking densities, substrate, reproductive biology, body condition and growth of the P. augusta captive population. To determine an appropriate stocking density for P. augusta groups of six snails were kept at two densities; with either 720cm2, or 1440cm2 per group. -

Endemic Land Snail Fauna (Mollusca) on a Remote Peninsula in the Ogasawara Archipelago, Northwestern Pacific1 Satoshi Chiba2,3, Angus Davison,4 and Hideaki Mori3 Abstract: Historically, the Ogasawara Archipelago harbored more than 90 na- tive land snail species, 90% of which were endemic. Unfortunately, about 40% of the species have already gone extinct across the entire archipelago. On Haha- jima, the second-largest island and the one on which the greatest number of species was recorded, more than 50% of species are thought to have been lost. We report here the results of a recent survey of the snails of a remote peninsula, Higashizaki, on the eastern coast of Hahajima. Although the peninsula is small (@0.3 km2) and only part is covered by forest (<0.1 km2), we found 12 land snail species, all of which are endemic to Ogasawara. Among these species, five had been thought to already be extinct on Hahajima, including Ogasawarana yoshi- warana and Hirasea acutissima. Of the former, there has been no record since its original description in 1902. Except for the much larger island of Anijima and the main part of Hahajima, no single region on the Ogasawara Archipelago maintains as great a number of native land snail species. It is probable that the land snail fauna of the Higashizaki Peninsula is exceptionally well preserved be- cause of a lack of anthropogenic disturbance and introduced species. In some circumstances, even an extremely small area can be an important and effective refuge for threatened land snail faunas. ABSTRACT: An experiment was conducted to study the performance of growing snails fed a basal diet of milk leaf (Euphorbia heterophylla) supplemented with calcium from three sources (egg shell, oyster shell and bone meal). A total of 120 growing snails with weight range of 100- 110g were randomly allotted to four treatment groups (T1, T2, T3 and T4), replicated three times with 10 snails per replicate in a completely randomized design. The snails on T1, T2 and T3 were fed with milk leaf supplemented with egg shell, oyster shell and bone meal as calcium sources respectively. T4 consisted of snails fed with milk leaf alone. The feeding trial lasted 13 weeks. Calcium supplements analysed contained 73.6% calcium for eggshell, 59.4% calcium for oyster shell and 33.2% calcium for bone meal. The results showed that the total weight gain, shell length, shell width and shell thickness was highest with snails on egg shell (T1). Snails on bonemeal as the calcium supplement (T3) recorded the highest mortality of 40% and had the poorest performance which was similar to those of snails on control diet of milk leaf alone (T4). -

The malacological collection of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, curated by Dr. Carla B. Kotzian, has been recently donated to the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP, Brazil). The collection is rich in well preserved specimens of terrestrial gastropods from central Rio Grande do Sul state, in southernmost Brazil. That region, centered in the municipality of Santa Maria, represents a transitional area between the Atlantic Rainforest and Pampas biomes and has been scarcely reported in the literature. Therefore, we present a taxonomical study of these specimens, complemented by historical material of the MZSP collection. Overall, we report 20 species, mostly belonging to the Stylommatophora, from which four represent new records for Rio Grande do Sul: Adelopoma brasiliense, Happia vitrina, Macrodontes gargantua, and Cyclodontina corderoi. The present report of C. corderoi is also the first from Brazil. Two introduced species were found in the studied material: Bradybaena similaris and Zonitoides sp. Key-Words.
