They brutally torture and then drown the boy, because Emmet had whistled at the white village beauty queen and called Bye, bye babe after her. The court acquits the murderers. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an elderly African American lady, refuses to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She is arrested and taken to court for violating segregation laws. These events in 1955 mark the beginning of the African American Civil Rights Movement, which will grow into a proud political force under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King. By 1968 it will have put an end to arbitrary injustice caused by racial segregation in the U.S. There have been times that I thought I couldn‘t last for long / But now I think I‘m able to carry on / It‘s been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come – This soul anthem, composed by Sam Cooke in 1963, speaks of the hope for change during these times. Sam himself had been arrested for offences against the laws relating to civil disorders and rioting, because he and his band had tried to check in to a “whites only” motel. Closely linked to the Civil Rights Movement, soul music delivers the soundtrack for this period of political change and upheaval in the United States.

That’s a huge discrepancy and with penalties and interest the total could exceed $1 billion. During the trial that ended on February 24th, the estate of Michael Jackson pointed to a lack of endorsement deals and accusations of child abuse to support its $2,105 value. The IRS, citing the success of Jackson’s estate in monetizing the singer’s name and image to gross more than $1 billion through licensing deals, believes that amount should be closer to its assessment of $434 million. When Michael Jackson died, he was entangled in legal battles, had taken major hits to his public image and was deeply in debt. After his death, the executors of Michael Jackson’s estate orchestrated a masterful turnaround and generated more than a billion dollars in revenue using the King of Pop’s likeness. While the concept of infringement upon an individual’s right to his or her image and right of publicity as a distinct commercial tort was recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977, the issue of a celebrity’s estate being responsible for tax on the individual’s right of publicity was not addressed until a 1994 case involving the estate of V.C.

    THE BIRTH OF HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard rock was born in spaces too small to contain it, birthed and midwifed by youths simultaneously exhilarated by the prospect of emergent new freedoms and frustrated by the slow pace of their development, and delivered with equipment which had never been designed for the tasks to which it was now applied. Hard rock was the sound of systems under stress, of energies raging against confnement and constriction, of forces which could not be contained, merely harnessed. It was defned only in retrospect, because at the time of its inception it did not even recognise itself. The musicians who played the frst ‘hard rock’ and the audiences who crowded into the small clubs and ballrooms of early 1960s Britain to hear them, thought they were playing something else entirely. In other words, hard rock was – like rock and roll itself – a historical accident. It began as an earnest attempt by British kids in the 1960s, most of whom were born in the 1940s and raised and acculturated in the 1950s, to play American music, drawing on blues, soul, R&B, jazz and frst-generation rock, but forced to reinvent both the music, and its world, in their own image, resulting in something entirely new. However, hard rock was neither an only child, nor born fully formed. It shared its playpen, and many of its toys, with siblings (some named at the time and others only in retrospect) like R&B, psychedelia, progressive rock, art-rock and folk-rock, and it emerged only gradually from the intoxicating stew of myriad infuences that formed the musical equivalent of primordial soup in the uniquely turbulent years of the second (technicolour!) half of the 1960s.

RZA, always the heart of the operation, worked tirelessly to round up the troops and dissolve beefs for the reunion album that dropped Dec. 2, 2014. “I wanted to make a record that pays homage to soul music and hip-hop,” he said about the making of this album. “I went to the past to make something for the future.” RZA came out of his own pockets to fund the album to the tune of half a million dollars. Some of the best in the industry are featured on the album—Rick Rubin, Adrian Younge, David Porter, Kenny Gamble and Rob Cavallo, all had their hands in the pot. Wu-Tang has always done things big and with vision. RZA led the 9-member group to an unprecedented label deal where each member was able to launch solo records.
