Unpublished © Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat / Georges Binder The “International” Skyscraper: Observations While using tall buildings data, the following paper aims to show trends and shifts relating to building use and new locations accommodating high-rise buildings. After decades of the American office building being dominate, in the last twelve years we have observed a gradual but major shift from office use to residential and mixed-use for Tall Buildings, and from North America to Asia. The turn of the millennium has also seen major changes in the use of buildings in cities having the longest experience with Tall Buildings. Chicago is witnessing a series of office buildings being transformed into residential or mixed-use buildings, a phenomenon also occurring on a large scale in New York. In midtown Manhattan of New York City we note the transformation of major hotels into residential projects. The transformation of landmark projects in midtown New York City is making an impact, but it is not at all comparable to the number of new projects being built in Asia. When conceiving new projects, we should perhaps bear in mind that, in due time, these will also experience major shifts in uses and we should plan for this in advance. -

It is expected that even mile-high towers will soon no longer be a dream. Structural systems have always been one of the most fundamental technologies for the dramatic developments of tall buildings. This paper presents structural systems employed for the world’s tallest buildings of different periods since the emergence of supertall buildings in the early 1930s. Further, structural systems used for today’s extremely tall buildings over 500 m, such as core-outrigger, braced mega- tube, mixed, and buttressed core systems, are reviewed and their performances are studied. Finally, this paper investigates the potential of superframed conjoined towers as a viable structural and architectural solution for mile-high and even taller towers in the future. Wemer Lorenz RISE AND DECLINE -A FIVE-MINUTE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL ENGINEER In the year 1762, the librarian of the Roman cardinal Albani, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, born in the North German town of Stendal, published a pamphlet titled «Anmerkungen über die Baukunst der alten Tempel zu Girgenti in Sizilien» (Remarks on the Architecture of the 01d Temples at Girgenti in Sicily) (Winckelmann 1762). In no time, this publication became the manifesto of the young neo-c1assicist movement in Europe. Evaluating his own systematic research of antique architecture, Winckelmann ca11s it the most appropriate model for any form of architecture, inc1uding contemporary. He distinguishes c1early between the «Wesentliche» (essential) and the «ZierJichkeit in der Baukunst» (daintiness of architecture). The c1ear distinction signifies an abrupt turning away from the previous baroque perception of architecture. The concept of the «essential» introduces construction as a defining parameter into architectural theory. According to Winckelmann architecture results primarily from constructive considerations. Noteworthy also is the context of his publication. Only a few years prior, in an Italian publication from 1748, one can find the term «inginiero civile» and in 1768, the term civil engineer is used for the first time in England, where the first «Society of Civil Engineers of the Kingdom» is founded in 1771. The Figure 1 civil engineer is born. -

This paper reviews the evolution of tall building’s structural systems and the technological driving force behind tall building developments. For the primary structural systems, a new classification – interior structures and exterior structures – is presented. While most representative structural systems for tall buildings are discussed, the emphasis in this review paper is on current trends such as outrigger systems and diagrid structures. Auxiliary damping systems controlling building motion are also discussed. Further, contemporary “out-of-the-box” architectural design trends, such as aerodynamic and twisted forms, which directly or indirectly affect the structural performance of tall buildings, are reviewed. Finally, the future of structural developments in tall buildings is envisioned briefly. We explore the ancient idea of Harmony and Beauty and the historical confidence in the logarithmic spiral as the symbol of perfection in an un- built project for a 565 m (1,854 ft) high skyscraper that was supposed to be built on the tip of Manhattan, NYC. The role of geometry is no more exploited as an instrument for controlling architectural form, but for its liberation: the project for a helicoidal skyscraper consisted of a succession of warped wings developed on the layout of the logarithmic spiral. The helicoidal shape, works better than the others in splitting up the force of the wind in resistance, has a positive influence on the stability of the building and is the result of a strong design theory wondering about the power of invention, the power of geometry, the power of relationships among numbers, and finally the beauty of (deriving from) mathematics (in Architecture). -

Prakash Rao The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago The unceasing quest of the society to enhance the quality and standards of living invariably culminates at the plans for the development of infrastructure. The prosperity of any country can be judged by its structures, be it buildings, bridges or towers. A vibrant economy and poor infrastructure rarely co-exist. A nation invests in the infrastructure not only for day-to-day needs but also for commerce, trade, defence, recreation and future development. Structural engineering is in the forefront of development wherever civilisation flourished. The challenges of structural engineers have increased enormously through centuries particularly in the current century with the dreams of multi-kilometre high towers and long bridges besides of establishing colonies on far off planets. Some of the aspects of structural engineering, its education and future trends are discussed in this brief article. From Troubled to Trophy: The Turnaround of Chicago’s OneEleven August 14, 2015 | By Ryan Ori When Chicago’s OneEleven apartment development sold for a record price earlier this year, it marked the second notable achievement for the project. Before the $328 million sale, mere completion of the 60-story build- ing had erased an eyesore from one of the Loop’s most visible walls of trophy towers. Chicago-based real estate investment management firm Heitman paid $651,000 per unit for the building along the Chicago River, a city record. That January sale by Related Midwest is even more remarkable considering that just a few years earlier, the property at Wacker Drive and Clark Street stood as a constant reminder of a real estate development pipeline that had dried up during the recession. From 2008 to 2012, a 27-story concrete skeleton lurked over office workers and tourists walking along the Chica- go River. A previous developer’s plan to construct the city’s fifth-tallest skyscraper—90 stories of luxury condo- miniums and a hotel—was halted after efforts to secure a construction loan stalled. “It was a pretty palpable sign of the downturn,” says Curt Bailey, president of Related Midwest, an affiliate of New York City–based Related Companies. “It basically said, ‘The city is not viable for development, and we’ve got failure on our face.’ The architecture boat tours go right by there, and they were basically staring at it.” Nine years elapsed between the ground breaking by the initial development venture, an affiliate of Chicago-based engineering firm Teng & Associates, and the record sale by Related. -

Zurich The paper deals with the dramatic story of the preparation for (and subsequent failure of) the 4th Congrès internationaux d’architecture moderne (CIAM) conference in Moscow. The offer to host the congress in Moscow was made in 1929, with the planned topic ‘Urban Organisation, Urban Construction, and Regional Planning’. Had it taken place in 1930 or 1931, the planned congress would have had an enormous impact. It probably would have been able to counteract the split of the modern urban construction movement into two factions, with those in favour of reconstructing existing cities on the one hand and proponents of building brand new cities on the other. It is widely believed that the congress was moved from Moscow to Athens due to CIAM’s protest against the results of the competition for the Palace of Soviets. Indeed, the controversy over this contest certainly delayed the congress. However, the study of the archival sources shows that the postponement was a result of a drastic change in the USSR’s domestic policies, which took place before CIAM challenged the results of the competition.
