Dynamics of international news environments Comparative analysis of online news services in the US and India By Kohei Watanabe Submitted to Central European University Department of Political Science In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Kate Coyer CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary (2011) ABSTRACT This research aims to understand the changes in international news environments by the Internet with particular interests in the global dominance of the US-based ITC companies. More than 60,000 international news items are collected from Yahoo! News, Google News and the online services of leading newspapers in the US and India, and dictionary-based computer content analysis is performed. In this thesis, the difference in increase of representation of news about developing countries by Yahoo! News and Google News between the US and India are examined. The results of the analyses show that Yahoo! News and Google News are creating almost the same amount of changes in representation of developing countries in the US and India. But Yahoo! News represents developing countries less than the online services of newspapers, while Google News represents developing countries more than the online services of newspapers. Less representation of developing countries by Yahoo! News is due to its total reliance on news agencies for news items. Higher representation of developing countries by Google News is due to its extremely diverse news sources including CEU eTD Collection non-Western news organizations. The diversity in news sources produces a highly volatile and concentrated news coverage pattern and attracts attention from Western audience.

He said Japan was Malaysia's third largest trading partner and bilateral trade made up 11 percent, or more than one-tenth, of total trade volume of Malaysia. He was speaking at a media briefing held in conjunction with the release of the report on the economic relations between Japan and Malaysia here today. The report was released by Japan's Finance Ministry in Tokyo yesterday. Horie said concerns over the US economic slowdown had not affected the operations of Japanese companies in Malaysia. "As of today, there are no signs of a slowdown in bilateral trade or investments in Malaysia," he said. He said although the US economy was fluctuating, Malaysia's was showing a good performance. Horie said in the first 10 months of 2007, Japanese investments in Malaysia amounted to RM6.129 billion compared with RM11.195 billion in 2006.

Question 1 of a June 2009 RRT Research & Information research response1 examines the issue of the level of state protection for victims of domestic violence in Malaysia, as does question 8 of a May 2009 RRT Research & Information research response.2 Malaysia‟s Domestic Violence Act (1994), enacted 1 June 1996, states that the definition of domestic violence includes physical injury, fear of physical injury, unlawful detention and mischief or destruction to property “knowing that it is likely to cause distress to the victim.” The Act also states that domestic violence is perpetrated by persons against a spouse, former spouse, a child, an incapacitated adult, or “any other member of the family.”3 The Malaysian state news agency Bernama indicated in a December 2008 article that the Act may be amended to expand the definition of what constitutes domestic violence. According to Bernama, the Women, Family and Community Development Minister had indicated that amendments may include “emotional, mental and psychological forms and the usage of drugs and intoxicating substances without the consent of victims” as forms of domestic violence.4 A June 2009 report by the UN Human Rights Council states that Malaysia‟s “Domestic Violence Act was amended to expand the definition of „domestic violence‟ to include emotional, mental and psychological forms
