[email protected] / www.wa-acte.org Senate Committees House Committees Washington State Legislature Now the hearings begin. Bills have been “dropped” and many are getting signatures to be dropped. One of my priorities this week has been collecting signatures for a draft bill sponsored by Rep. John McCoy from the 38th Legislative District in the Marysville area of Snohomish County. This is the first time I have actually walked around a blue sheet collecting signatures of representatives to sign on in support of a bill as it is dropped into the “hopper” to begin the legislative process. The brief description of this measure is: Supporting K-12 Career Education, Exploration, and Planning. A title will be attached when the bill receives a bill number. The “nickname” for the working draft is the “CTE-Careers Bill.” This bill takes recommendations from the Washington State CTE Strategic Plan that was presented to the legislature the first week of session. The recommendations are around Career Exploration, Career Education, and Career Planning. One item is to change the name of the Occupational Education credit as Career and Technical Education with courses approved by OSPI while allowing a student to choose an alternative course based on their individual High School and Beyond Plan.
