The Independent European Sport Review initiated by the sports ministers of the EU’s five key member states in cooperation with UEFA and FIFA is an important step in this direction. Its concludes in favour of sport being accorded a special, independent status and supports the European sport model. -

This is not an injustice but a reality. The real injustice is that conditions are not the same for everyone and, in particular, that some clubs deliberately go into the red to reinforce their teams by means of costly transfers. Legislation is stricter in some places than others and it is clearly beyond the means of an organisation such as UEFA to interfere in national procedures. This cannot, however, be used as an excuse to do nothing. We cannot advocate respect in every possible form and champion fair play without encouraging them in the financial domain too. The first step in this direction has already been taken: by introducing IN THIS ISSUE a compulsory licence for clubs participating in European competitions, Football united UEFA has already laid down criteria to guarantee the financial health of clubs against racism 03 and, by extension, the orderly running of its competitions. Range of goals scored by winner and defeated teams in form of 5 minute periods, shots on goal, corner, contributing to the score by starting 5 and substitutes, fouls, yellow-red cards, the range of goals according to shot techniques and goal zones were examined. While a total of 129 goals were scored with an average of 6.45 goals per game, with 25 goals (19.38%) most goals was scored between 36 and 40 minutes. 41.1% of goals were scored in penalty area, 58.9% of goals were scored from outside penalty area. While the rate of shots on goal in winner teams was 55.6%, this rate in defeated teams was 44.4%. In winner teams the players started in first 5 scored 50 goals (56.8%) and players joined from bench scored 38 goals (43.2%) and in defeated teams the first 5 scored 21 goals (60%) and the players joined from bench scored only 14 goals (40%). -

Suggestions for Improvement 20.06.2017 © Cem C Karamürsel 2 Introduction Since the beginning of 1990s, European basketball has gone through a quite turbulent period experiencing major structural and economic challenges, mainly caused by (i) deficit of demand (especially compared to football), (ii) certain governance issues (e.g. FIBA vs ULEB/Euroleague), and (iii) lack of a rational and sustainable economic model. Failure in creating and establishing such a model led to the situation that some traditional teams with a very successful history (such as Limoges, Benetton Basket, Kinder Bologna and more recently Montepaschi Siena and so on) have disappeared from the top-level European competition. Without any doubt, since its inception, Euroleauge Basketball has achieved quite a remarkable progress in enhancing the commercial value of the top-level European basketball league and significantly increasing the competition’s revenues. However, it still cannot be argued that the operating model of European basketball is now based on economically sound and rational principles & practices. In an effort to strengthen the financial stability of its clubs and to improve its financial governance model, Euroleague Basketball enacted its Financial Stability and Fair Play Regulations (FSFP). In this study, we perform a critical review of the financial criteria as set out in the FSFP rules (as stated in 2016-2017 Bylaws), both from an economic and legal perspective, also considering the “current reality” in European Basketball. -

An Empirical Study of Revenue Generation and Competitive Balance Relationship in European Football Selçuk ÖZAYDIN*, Murat DONDURAN** Received: March 20, 2019. Revised: August 2, 2019. Accepted: August 7, 2019. Abstract Distribution of income has been an important area of research in both economics and sports economics literature. However, the sports economics literature regarding European football lacks empirical studies associated with the relationship between revenue generation and competitive balance. This study analyzes the revenue sharing structure in Europe’s top 5 football leagues along with its effects on competitive balance. Trends in the distribution of revenue are illustrated with the help of Lorenz curves and the coefficient of variations of revenue shares. There is significant evidence that there have been severe distortions in the distribution of revenue in European football, and it has been influential in the competition. The revenue shares of the top 5 leagues’ have changed substantially over the last two decades which led to the utter dominance of European football by few clubs. The increasing inequality, in revenue generation and sharing, has affected the competitive balance adversely. The rising financial domination of the giants in European football is widening the gap between them and the lower profile teams hence decreasing the uncertainty of games, which might have adverse effects on the demand for football.
