Recently, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) has developed resistance to two toxin Bt maize and cotton (Cry1A and Cry2A). Hence, growers are transitioning to three toxin Bt cotton and maize that express both Cry toxins and the Vip3Aa toxin. H. zea susceptibility to Vip3Aa is threatened by 1) a lack of availability of non-Bt refuge crop hosts, including a 1–5% annual decline in the number of non-Bt maize hybrids being marketed; 2) the ineffectiveness of three toxin cultivars to function as pyramids in some regions, with resistance to two out of three toxins in the pyramid; and 3) the lack of a high dose Vip3Aa event in cotton and maize. We propose that data should be collected on current Cry-resistant H. -

Packauskas1 Abstract Forty eight species of Pentatomidae are listed as occurring in the state of Kansas, nine of these are new state records. A key to all species known from the state of Kansas is given, along with some notes on new state records. ____________________ The family Pentatomidae, comprised of mainly phytophagous and a few predaceous species, is one of the largest families of Heteroptera. Some of the phytophagous species have a wide host range and this ability may make them the most economically important family among the Heteroptera (Panizzi et al. 2000). As a group, they have been found feeding on cotton, nuts, fruits, veg- etables, legumes, and grain crops (McPherson 1982, McPherson and McPherson 2000, Panizzi et al 2000). -

EENY-523 A Stink Bug Euschistus quadrator Rolston (Insecta: Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)1 Sara A. Brennan, Joseph Eger, and Oscar E. Liburd2 Introduction in the membranous area of the hemelytra, a characteristic present in other Euschistus species. Euschistus quadrator Rolston was described in 1974, with specimens from Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana. Euschistus quadrator was not found in Florida until 1992. It has since spread throughout the state as well as becoming an agricultural pest of many fruit, vegetable, and nut crops in the southeastern United States. It has a wide host range, but is most commonly found in cotton, soybean and corn. Euschistus quadrator has recently become a more promi- nent pest with the introduction of crops such as Bt cotton and an increase in the usage of biorational or reduced-risk pesticides. Distribution Euschistus quadrator is originally from Texas and Mexico, and has since been reported in Louisiana, Georgia, and Florida. Description Figure 1. Phalaena zea (Boddie) Heliothis umbrosus Grote Taxonomic position: Insecta: Lepidoptera: Noctuidae Common names: American bollworm, corn earworm, tomato fruitworm, New World bollworm (English) Chenille des épis du maïs (French) Amerikanischer Baumwollkapselwurm (German) Notes on taxonomy and nomenclature: The taxonomic situation is complicated and presents several problems. Hardwick (1965) reviewed the New World corn earworm species complex and the Old World African bollworm (Noctuidae), most of which had previously been referred to as a single species (Heliothis armigera or H. obsoleta), and pointed out that there was a complex of species and subspecies involved. Specifically he proposed that the New World H. zea (first used in 1955) was distinct from the Old World H. armigera on the basis of male and female genitalia. And he described the new genus Helicoverpa to include these important pest species, Some 80 or more species were formerly placed in Heliothis (sensu lato) and Hardwick referred 17 species (including 11 new species) to Helicoverpa on the basis of differences in both male and female genitalia. Within this new genus the zea group contains eight species, and the armigera group two species with three subspecies. See also Hardwick (1970). LOAN Biosystematics Research Institute, Agriculture Canada, Research Branch, Ottawa KlA 0C6 Resume Nous avons e'eve des Euphorines parasites (14 espbces de Peristenus et 4 de Leiophron) b partir de 28 especes de Mirides, recoltes pres de Belleville, Ontario. Nous avons, en plus, obtenu plusieurs immatures d'Euphorines indeterminees chez 24 autres espbces d'hotes. Les parasites de chaque espece se rencontrent dans les nymphes d'une ou plusieurs especes de mirides. La majorite des hates et tous les parasites nont qu'une seule generation annuelle. L'attaque des para- sites ne se produit que durant la periode nymphale de I'hote. Les adultes hivernent en diapause, dans les cocons. Le taux de parasitisme est de 16 6 64%. Abstract Euphorine parasites, comprising 14 species of Peristenus and four of Leio- phron, were reared from 28 plant bug species collected near Belleville, Ontario. Immature, unidentifiable euphorines were found in 24 other host species. Each of the parasite species attacked nymphs of one or more plant bugs. Most of the hosts, and all the parasites have one generation per year. Parasitism was limited to the portion of the season when the host(s) was in the nymphal stage. The over- wintered parasites were inactive as diapausing adults in cocoons until the growing season of the following year. From 16-64 per cent of host nymphs were parasitized. An invasive species, the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Sta˚ l), is spreading through the region. However, little is known about the complex of stink bug species associ- ated with corn and soybean in the midwestern United States. In this region, particularly in the more northern states, stink bugs have historically caused only infrequent impacts to these crops. To prepare growers and agri- cultural professionals to contend with this new threat, we provide a review of stink bugs associated with soybean and corn in the midwestern United States.
